Chapter 46 - Territorial Dispute

Hours later, as the sun began its descent, the oppressive darkness fell upon The Sacred Forest. Frantic steps rustled through the dense, ravaged undergrowth.

Matteo, Stark, and Hafen stumbled into a small clearing and panted. Dark, dried blood stained their battle suits. The glow from their elemental swords slowly dimmed as they relaxed.

On the ground, zombies lay scattered and motionless. A few of their decapitated heads rolled to a halt.

Matteo lit up his elemental rapier and breathed in short, shallow gasps. "There were so many of them," he stammered, and his eyes widened with a mixture of terror and exhaustion. He looked down at the charred claw marks on his rapier.

Stark stood tall, and his elemental claymore rested on his shoulder. A fierce pride burned in his eyes. He surveyed their handiwork with a grim satisfaction. "We've stopped them," he declared.

Hafen, silent and introspective, looked at the motionless bodies with a thoughtful frown. "The real threat is still out there. Let's go," he cautioned. He slid his elemental katana back into its sheath and moved forward.

As they traversed through a wrecked path, the forest floor became sticky and damp.

Web threads, thick as ropes, stretched between the trees like a macabre tapestry. They glinted faintly in the fading light.

"What is this," Matteo asked and nervously poked at a thread with the tip of his rapier.

"It looks like a giant spider web," Hafen deduced with a wary expression. He scanned the area with a narrowed gaze. "We must be entering their domain. Be careful," he advised.

Stark took the lead. "Don't worry. I'll clear us a path," he confidently proclaimed. He swung his elemental claymore and sliced through the threads with a clean, sharp sound.

The threads recoiled like rubber bands. A fine, shimmering dust rained down. A strange, sickly-sweet stench filled the air.

Hafen coughed and covered his nose. "That smells awful," he complained.

Suddenly, a rustle in the branches above caught their attention.

A massive spider lowered itself on a single, thick thread. Its multiple, beady eyes glowed a faint, malevolent red. It tilted its head and regarded them with an unnerving intelligence.

"What in the world," Matteo gasped and stumbled back.

The spider let out a low, guttural hiss and landed on the ground with a thud.

Stark readied his elemental claymore. "This is going to be a tough one," he commented with a smirk.

The spider suddenly turned and scurried away. It disappeared into the dense undergrowth with surprising speed.

Matteo released the tension in his shoulders.

Stark raised a brow and questioned, "Why would it run away like that?"

Hafen looked at the path of the spider's retreat and noted, "It's heading in the same direction as Prince Kain."

Stark's expression hardened. "Let's follow it," he suggested.

Hafen nodded in agreement.

Matteo, Stark, and Hafen pushed through the thick webs and followed the trail. They ducked under low-hanging branches and leaped over twisted roots.

In the center of a clearing, the massive spider stood face-to-face with Prince Kain and his entourage of bulky zombie guards.

The spider's multiple, beady eyes darted back and forth with menacing glares.

One of the zombie guards stepped forward and snarled, "Go... Away!" He raised his hands and attempted to scare it away. "We... Protect... Prince Kain."

The spider ignored the zombie guard and took another step closer. Her red eyes fixed on the drooling prince.

Prince Kain slowly paced around with an irritated face. He groaned and pointed a chubby finger. "Deal... With... Them," he demanded in an infantile tone.

The zombie guards growled and formed a protective circle around the prince.

The spider suddenly shot a thick, white strand of web from its abdomen.

The strand flew through the air and wrapped around a zombie guard.

The zombie guard groaned in frustration as he struggled to break free.

Another zombie guard lunged at the spider with a swift swipe of her claws.

The spider skillfully leaped to the side and avoided the attack. It retaliated with a powerful kick.

The zombie guard tumbled to the ground.

In an instant, more clicks echoed from their surroundings. Spiders of all sizes emerged. They scurried down tree trunks and rose from burrows in the ground. They surrounded the zombies and hissed threateningly.

From a nearby bush, Hafen, Matteo, and Stark spied on them with awe.

"What's going on? Why are they fighting each other," Matteo sought to know with a whisper.

Hafen's eyes widened in realization. "It's a territorial dispute. The spiders must be defending their domain from Prince Kain's havoc," he revealed.

Stark smirked. "This could be our chance," he murmured and stood up.

Hafen grasped his brother's shoulder and urged, "Let's not be reckless."

Stark reluctantly knelt back down with a huff. His hands trembled in anticipation.

"Should we help them, the spiders," Matteo inquired with a frown.

Stark shook his head and reminded, "They're monsters, Matteo. I don't think they'd appreciate our help."

"If they wear each other down, it will be easier for us to finish the job. We'll wait for an opening," Hafen strategized.

Meanwhile, a zombie guard lunged and swiped off a spider's leg.

The spider scurried back and shot a glob of acidic venom. It splashed onto the zombie guard's chest.

Sizzling, the zombie guard groaned in agony as smoke billowed from the wound.

At the same time, Prince Kain picked up a giant boulder and hurled it.

The boulder crashed into the densest cluster of spiders, crushing them under its immense weight. A sickening crunch echoed through the clearing.

Seeing their leader, the zombie guards redoubled their efforts. They fought with a renewed ferocity, tearing through the spiders with fury.

A spider leaped onto a zombie guard's back and sank its fangs into his neck.

The zombie guard's roar turned into a gurgle, and he collapsed to the ground. Acid spilled out of its mouth.

Spiders, despite their venom, struggled to overcome the sheer resilience and strength of the royal guards. Their numbers dwindled. One by one, they fell with their carapaces cracked and their legs twitching in their final moments.

Prince Kain sneered with a triumphant laugh. He waddled toward a cluster of fleeing spiders.

From a bush, Stark's fists clenched. "The spiders are going to lose. I cannot wait any longer," he solaced with frustration.

Hafen held up a hand for silence.

"Wait," Matteo suddenly whispered. He pointed high with the tip of his finger. "Look."

"I'm here! Come, Anya," a small, high-pitched voice called out from a high branch, and a small figure leaped to another branch. He wore a torn blue shirt and shorts. His long, messy hair covered his determined look.

Stark, Matteo, and Hafen stared with their jaws agape.

"It's a boy," Matteo blurted out.

The boy looked no older than Matteo. He stood defiantly, and he scanned the battle with a serious expression. He seemed completely unafraid.

Anya, the giant spider they had followed, retreated into the shadows of the massive trees. Her beady red eyes burned with a mixture of fury and intelligence as she crawled up a tree.

The boy unexpectedly jumped and rode on top of it. "Forward! For our home," he commanded.

Prince Kain's zombie guards looked up and forward in bewilderment.

The remaining spiders rallied upon seeing the boy. They surged forward and fought with a flurry of bites and acidic venom.

At the same time, Matteo and Stark exchanged confused looks.

Hafen focused on the boy's determined face. He pointed out, "It seems like he's a member of the spiders, and they're fighting the zombies. For now, we have a common enemy. Let's help him." He unsheathed the elemental katana, and it, eager for a command, flickered a blue light.

Stark nodded and needed no further convincing. "Finally," he roared and slammed the elemental claymore into the ground.

With a green glow, vines erupted, thicker and more powerful than before. They coiled around and restrained the legs of several zombie guards.

Prince Kain roared in frustration and tore through the vines with his bare hands.

"I'll handle the prince," Stark declared and charged.

"Matteo, focus your fire on the zombies," Hafen commanded as he rushed to help the spiders. He stopped a claw swipe from one of the zombies and defended the back of a spider. With a swing of the elemental katana, lightning erupted and scorched the adversary.

The strange boy watched them join the fight, and a flicker of surprise crossed his face. "Humans are helping," he muttered. He turned to the giant spider beneath him and commanded, "Anya, with me."

Who's the boy with the spiders? Can this new alliance stop the rampage of Prince Kain and his royal guards?
