Chapter 51 - Murderous Intent

In a dark room, Cassandra stood with an exhausted look and her breathing racing. In an instant, she collapsed to the stone floor and fell unconscious.

"No! My daughter," a stern, masculine voice echoed through the strange room.

A frantic scramble followed suit.

Soon, Cassandra reawakened in a hospital bed and gasped for air.

"Cassandra," a feminine voice called out softly.

Cassandra turned her head and saw a bedridden woman with silver hair and kind but weary eyes. "Mom," she called and ran to her. She hugged her and never wanted to let go.

Her mother smiled and stroked her hair. "It's okay, Cassandra. I'm here. I... I love you," she whispered.

Cassandra, safe in her mother's arms, felt a warm sensation fill her chest. "Love you, mommy," she murmured.

Her mother slowly closed her tired eyes.

The memory faded.

Soon, the sun reached its peak, and its rays illuminated the central district of The Sacred Forest. The forest came alive with the sounds of chirping small monsters and rustling leaves.

Hafen, Matteo, and Stark, exhausted and battered, emerged from the shadows of The Dark Depths. They entered a beautiful, open meadow filled with flowers.

A soft glow of dawn reflected off the wet leaves, and a serene silence settled over the landscape. In the distance, The Orphanage stood tall.

With a weary smile, Matteo pointed it out and commented, "Look! We made it."

Hafen nodded, and he sighed with relief.

Stark, with an optimistic expression, thought aloud, "Hopefully, the others are alright." He stared at the path of trampled flowers.

Meanwhile, the zombies gained the upper hand. They cornered the orphans, and their eyes glinted with rage.

"We're doomed," an orphan cried.

"No, we're not," a voice boomed.

The orphans turned to see who spoke.

From a window, Stark jumped inside. He landed on the floor with a confident smirk.

"Stark," Pepoto exclaimed.

Behind him, Hafen and Matteo followed.

"We're here to help," Hafen proclaimed with his katana in hand.

Matteo smiled and held his rapier. "Let's teach these zombies a lesson," he declared.

The zombies, snarling, charged at them.

Stark, Hafen, and Matteo readied their elemental weapons and unleashed their powers.

Stark created a wall of vines to block the zombies' path.

With a swing, Hafen sent a wave of water to push them back.

Matteo thrust a jet of fire to burn them.

The zombies stumbled and fell. They burned until the flames dissipated.

Cassandra opened her eyes and sat up with her dark markings returning. She saw the three brothers and their elemental weapons. She smirked with a dark glint. "You have my uncle's weapons," she murmured. She slowly stood up and took a few steps closer.

"Cassandra," Pepe warned. He stood by the orphans, who huddled behind him.

Hafen and Matteo turned and faced her. They looked at her with shock and concern.

"What are you doing," Hafen interrogated.

"Are you okay," Matteo asked.

Cassandra ignored their questions and stared at their weapons. She scowled, and her eyes glowed red. She raised her arms, and the metal objects in the room began to shake.

Hafen and Matteo grew wary and prepared.

Just then, their elemental weapons shook violently and flew out of their hands.

"What's happening," Stark demanded. He looked at his claymore, which had crashed into a wall.

The orphans' weapons also flew away.

"Get them," Cassandra ordered the zombies.

The zombies obeyed and lunged.

Pepe fought on the front lines to protect his siblings.

The orphans gathered behind him and observed in anticipation.

Hafen, Stark, and Matteo ran to retrieve their weapons.

However, Cassandra threw them back with a few kicks.

"Ouch," Matteo whined and rubbed his back. He coughed.

Hafen shook his head and groaned.

Stark growled in fury.

Cassandra walked towards them with a menacing look. "Are you nothing without these elemental weapons," she questioned. She picked up Matteo's elemental rapier and examined it with a curious expression. "This is my uncle's work," she confirmed. With a malicious grin, she pointed the weapon at Matteo and threatened, "How about I use it on you?"

"It's not for you, so you can't. Give it back," Matteo protested.

Sparks flew around the elemental rapier as Cassandra struggled to ignite it. The sparks grew until a fire emerged. The unexpected fire lit up Matteo's face.

Matteo's eyes widened, and he frantically crawled back. "This is bad," he lamented.

Cassandra chuckled. "Looks like I can," she mocked and raised the weapon.

The fire enlarged to a massive flame above her. Rocks materialized around it like a shield.

Hafen and Stark stood up and positioned themselves in front of Matteo. They glared at her with protective looks.

Cassandra smirked and aimed at their chests. "Say goodbye to each other," she mused.

Suddenly, a loud, feminine voice interrupted, "Stop this at once!"

Everyone looked at the source of the voice.

From the top of the stairs, Ursa descended. Her eyes narrowed as she surveyed the chaos.

"Mom," Pepe whispered with wide eyes.

The orphans rushed to her side and hugged her. "Mommy," they cried.

Ursa patted their heads and looked at Cassandra with a stern expression. "What are you doing here, Cassandra? Why are you attacking my children," she demanded.

The flames immediately dissipated, and the rocks crumbled.

The zombies stared at Cassandra in wonder. "Princess," one of them queried.

Cassandra lowered the rapier and averted her gaze. "I'm here to kill them," she explained.

Ursa gasped in horror. "Why would you do such a thing? They are innocent," she pointed out with a frown.

"Innocent," Cassandra repeated with a scoff. "Humans deserve to die. They deserve to suffer," she ranted with an angry tone. Her messy hair began to float.

Ursa stopped and raised her hands. "Cassandra, listen to me. You are not a monster. You were a human girl. One with feelings and dreams," she tried to reason.

Cassandra hesitated for a moment. She stared at Ursa with a conflicted look. She lowered the rapier and felt a strange sensation in her chest. It was like a spark of warmth in a cold, dark void. "Human... But what does it mean to be human," she whispered.

"Yes, you are. You can be cured. Come with me," Ursa urged.

Cassandra's disheveled hair returned to straight hair, and the dark markings disappeared. She looked around at everyone watching her.

"Princess," a zombie called out with a concerned tone.

"Princess," Cassandra repeated with a curious tilt.

The zombies nodded and looked at her with loyalty.

"Good. You're back to your senses. The queen has tasked us to find and follow you," another zombie revealed with a raspy voice.

"She wants to see you," a third zombie added with a groan.

"The queen," Cassandra mumbled. Her eyes glistened with a hint of longing.

Ursa frowned and sought to know, "Cassandra, who is the queen?"

Cassandra ignored her and turned to the zombies. "Take me to her," she ordered.

The zombies bowed and formed a path for her.

Cassandra dropped the elemental rapier and followed them.

"Wait," Ursa called out and ran after her.

Cassandra turned her head and glared at her. "Don't get in my way," she warned and continued walking.

Ursa stopped and witnessed her leave. Her face softened into a sad expression.

The zombies exited The Orphanage and marched away.

After the echoes of their departure faded, a tense silence settled over the battered building.

Hafen, Stark, and Matteo retrieved their elemental weapons. They walked towards Ursa and the orphans.

"Thank you for saving us," Pepe remarked and bowed.

The orphans followed suit.

Ursa shook her head and insisted, "You don't have to thank me. Are you all alright?"

Hafen, Stark, and Matteo nodded.

"Yes, mom," Pepi answered with a sniffle.

"Thank goodness," Ursa exclaimed with a sigh. She looked at her children with pride. "I'm so proud of you all. You defended our home with such courage."

The orphans beamed with joy and hugged her.

Pepe smiled with relief.

Ursa gave a weak smile. "Now, let's clean up this mess," she suggested.

The orphans nodded and started picking up the debris and the bodies of the fallen zombies.

Ursa sat on a chair and watched. Her coughing fit returned, and she coughed more blood into her handkerchief. She quickly hid it in her pocket.

It soon became a cold, dreary night in The Sacred Forest. The wind howled, and the trees creaked ominously. The moon was hidden behind thick, black clouds, and the only light came from the dim glow of The Orphanage's windows.

Inside, the orphans huddled around a fire, trying to keep warm. They whispered stories and jokes to each other.

The fire crackled and popped.

Pepe walked to his fellow apprentices and asked, "How did it go with Old Man Marcus' mission?"

"We succeeded," Stark answered with a grin. He held up the elemental claymore with a triumphant smirk.

"I'm glad to hear that," Pepe complimented.

"What about you? How did your mission go," Matteo wanted to know.

Pepe scratched the back of his head and muttered, "Uh, it went well..." He recalled crashing into the cliff.

"I see," Hafen responded, and his eyes narrowed with suspicion. He inquired, "Where's your elemental lance?"

Pepe's face soured with a pout. "I lost it," he grumbled with a hint of shame.

Stark's eyes widened in disbelief. "You lost it! How do you lose an elemental weapon," he stammered.

"It's not my fault. When I woke up from my slumber, it was gone. I've been feeling down because of it," Pepe explained.

Matteo looked at Pepe sympathetically. "Don't worry, Pepe. We'll find your elemental lance," he reassured.

"Thank you," Pepe replied.

Can the apprentices find the missing elemental lance? Will they find Cassandra and discover the truth about her powers? What other dangers will they face in their missions as protectors of The Sacred Forest?
