Chapter 39 - CH 39: After the Invasion

Konoha Village – The Day After the Invasion

The sky above Konoha Village seemed to mourn along.

Although various preventive measures had been taken, the surprise attack from Sunagakure and Otogakure still left deep wounds.

The village was now shrouded in sadness, and significant ninja casualties were unavoidable.

The next day, a light drizzle fell gently, as if the sky's tears were washing over the grieving land of Konoha.

Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura, and Karin, all dressed in black, stood silently among the crowd.

They attended a solemn funeral ceremony held in front of the Hero Memorial Stone, led directly by the Third Hokage, Sarutobi Hiruzen.

The old Hokage's face looked more tired than usual, lines of sorrow clearly etched there.

Each name of a ninja who fell in battle was called out one by one, echoing in the heavy air.

Every shinobi was an invaluable asset to the village, as the process of raising and training a qualified shinobi was very long and difficult.

This time, Konoha had lost a large number of Chunin and even some Anbu.

The previously severe labor shortage had now become even more critical.

The Third Hokage felt the burden of responsibility weighing even heavier on his frail shoulders, yet he tried to remain strong.

"Where the tree leaves dance, there fire will blaze," the Third Hokage's voice sounded hoarse yet still dignified, breaking the solemn silence.

His eyes looked at the faces of the young ninjas before him one by one, faces that would become the future of the village.

"The shadow of that fire will continue to illuminate this village, providing warmth and hope, and allowing new leaf buds to grow and develop stronger than before..."

At the end of the funeral ceremony, the Third Hokage reaffirmed the spirit and Will of Fire that was the lifeblood of Konoha.

His words, though simple, carried the weight of history and the sacrifices of his predecessors.

Amidst the crowd that began to disperse with heavy steps, Naruto, standing beside Iruka-sensei, seemed lost in deep thought.

The Third Hokage's speech earlier, especially about sacrifice, replayed in his head.

He then turned to Iruka, his teacher who had always been there for him, with a look of doubt and confusion he rarely showed.

"Iruka-sensei," Naruto called softly, his voice barely a whisper.

"Why... why would those people risk their own lives? For others they might not even know personally? For the village? Is... isn't all of that futile in the end?"

Iruka, standing there, was slightly stunned to hear Naruto's profound and philosophical question.

He looked at his beloved student, seeing the honesty and confusion in his sapphire blue eyes.

Then, he smiled gently, a smile full of understanding and warmth.

"Naruto," Iruka said in a soft but clear voice, trying to make his words sink into Naruto's heart.

"When someone dies alone, without any bonds, without anyone to remember or miss them, perhaps everything they've been through will truly be lost – their past, their present life, and also all their hopes and future. Many great shinobi have fallen in war or while carrying out dangerous missions, and sometimes, their deaths come very easily and quickly, as if meaningless."

He paused for a moment, his gaze drifting towards the rain-soaked Memorial Stone.

"Among those who have passed, Naruto, many also had great dreams and hopes, just like you, just like all of us. Everyone surely has something or someone they value most in this life. Parents who raised us, brothers and sisters who are always there, comrades-in-arms who share joy and sorrow, lovers who fill our hearts, and the friends and citizens in this village... they are all very important people to us, aren't they?"

Naruto nodded slowly, thinking about the significant people in his life.

"Those shinobi, they trust each other, they protect each other with all their souls, and they help each other selflessly," Iruka continued.

"Since we were born into this world, Naruto, we've had bonds with someone, whether it's family or other people we consider important. And those bonds will grow stronger, deeper, and more priceless as time goes by and through the various life experiences we go through together."

Iruka patted Naruto's shoulder gently, trying to convey conviction.

"No complicated philosophical principles or profound doctrines are needed to understand it, Naruto. But people who have such bonds, sincere and strong bonds, they will willingly do it – protect the people they care about, protect the place they call home, even if it means sacrificing their own lives. Because that is what they value most above all else. In this world, Naruto, sometimes there are things far more frightening than death itself, namely losing the people we love, or failing to protect the beliefs and honor within our hearts."

"So, Naruto," Iruka smiled again, this time his smile wider and full of conviction.

"We, the shinobi of Konoha, may not fear death. We are ready to face it anytime for what we believe in. But we would be very afraid, very regretful, if we became helpless and unable to protect what we believe in and cherish in our hearts."

Naruto seemed to think hard, digesting every word Iruka-sensei spoke.

His facial expression slowly changed, from doubt to understanding, then to a new, burning determination.

After the funeral ceremony was completely over and the crowd had fully dispersed, they parted ways with Iruka and Sasuke.

Since their homes happened to be in the same direction, Naruto ended up walking side by side with Karin, through the subsiding drizzle.

The atmosphere between them was a little awkward at first.

Naruto was still thinking about Iruka's words, while Karin seemed a little hesitant to start a conversation.

"So, Karin," Naruto finally broke the silence, trying to sound casual.

"How are you doing now? I mean, after you officially became a Konoha Genin. Is everything alright?"

Karin turned, slightly surprised by Naruto's question.

She smiled faintly.

"Yeah, not bad. The Third Hokage was very kind to me. He arranged for me to be under the guidance of a Jonin named Tenzo-sensei. That was about two weeks before the third stage of the Chunin exam began."

"Tenzo-sensei?"

Naruto frowned, trying to remember.

"Do I know him?"

"I don't think so," Karin replied.

"He's... well, he's a bit quiet and serious, but he's a good teacher. He helped me a lot to adapt here."

"So, what have you been doing while I was busy training with Ero-sennin?" Naruto asked again, his curiosity piqued.

Karin sighed softly, a hint of tiredness in her voice.

"Well, most of my time was spent doing some D-rank missions with Tenzo-sensei."

She paused for a moment, then continued with a slightly complaining tone,

"Actually, you could say I was the only one really doing the missions. Tenzo-sensei's job was mostly to supervise from afar and make sure I didn't cause trouble or run away."

Naruto chuckled.

"D-rank missions, huh? I know exactly how that feels."

"You wouldn't believe this, Naruto," Karin said, her face slightly sour.

"I don't even remember how many times I had to chase that cursed cat belonging to the Daimyo's wife, Tora! That cat is really slippery and annoying! Every time I thought I had finally caught it, it always managed to escape!"

Naruto immediately burst out laughing hearing Karin's story.

He could clearly imagine how frustrated Karin must have been dealing with that legendary mission.

"Tora, huh?! Welcome to the club, Karin! Team 7 and I have had our fill of that cat-catching mission too! Believe me, it's a true test of patience for every Konoha Genin!"

Karin chuckled a little seeing Naruto's reaction.

The burden of sadness from the funeral earlier seemed to lift slightly with their banter.

"How about we stop by Ichiraku Ramen before heading home?"

Naruto suddenly suggested, his stomach starting to feel hungry.

"My treat, as an official welcome to Konoha and a celebration because we both survived the invasion!"

Karin's eyes sparkled a little.

"Ichiraku Ramen? Alright, why not?"

They then walked towards Naruto's favorite ramen shop, continuing their light conversation about silly missions and Karin's new experiences in Konoha.

Inside her seal, Hana, who had been silently listening and observing her prince's interaction with the red-haired Uzumaki girl, could only smile warmly.

There was a sincere tenderness in her smile.

'Fufu~ The two of them look... quite good together. Like a young couple on a date after school. How sweet~'
