The moment George asked that question, Rachel froze. The word brother, once so familiar, so warm... now felt painfully distant.
"He… went back home. I was just taking him in temporarily," Rachel replied softly, her tone calm but laced with quiet sorrow.
She returned to her seat and lowered her head, continuing to eat the half-finished meal as if nothing had changed.
George stared at her, disbelief flickering in his eyes.
