"Does it hurt?" she asked, her hand instinctively moving toward the back of his head.
She'd heard that awful thud, he must have hit the floor hard.
In her rush to check on him, she completely forgot about their position, her on top of him, him lying underneath, and the fact that he was still shirtless.
As she leaned over him, their bodies pressed even closer together.
Suddenly, his hand shot up and grabbed her wrist.
His voice was a low, rough whisper in her ear. "If I say it hurts, will you care about me? Will you actually worry?"
She froze. Then she looked down, really seeing how close they were. Her lips were just a breath away from his cheek.
She stared into his fever-bright eyes. "If you're really in pain, then you should call someone and get to a hospital for a proper check-up. Not just lie here burning up and trying to be tough. Jeffrey, everyone only gets one life!"
A soft, unexpected smile touched his lips. "So... you really don't want me to die, do you?"
