Ōtsutsuki Reishiki recalled the Heavenly King and lifted his gaze toward Kaito.
"Uchiha Kaito, I hope your body can provide enough nourishment for the Ten Tails!"
As soon as the words left his lips, the Ten Tails beneath him let out a deafening roar. It opened its enormous jaws, and at its maw appeared a blood-red sphere of energy, swelling rapidly in size.
Kaito's face darkened. That attack was clearly a Tailed Beast Bomb. After Ōtsutsuki Reishiki had taken control of the body, his mastery over the Ten Tails had more than doubled.
Reishiki's lips curled into a wicked grin.
"Try this on for size!"
The Ten Tails finished charging and spat the massive Tailed Beast Bomb. Yet Susanoo made no move to defend. Standing above it, Kaito's left eye began releasing tendrils of black smoke.
Before Susanoo, a vast vortex of darkness suddenly appeared. The Tailed Beast Bomb shot straight into it and vanished without a trace.
Seeing this, Ōtsutsuki Reishiki clicked his tongue.
"Tch, nothing more than a defective version of the God Tree's fruit."
Kaito, however, was intrigued by those words. He asked,
"So the Devil Fruits are actually the God Tree's fruits?"
"More or less. I told you before—this Ten Tails is special. When it first arrived in this world, it absorbed an immense amount of unknown energy, bearing countless fruits. The natives here call them Devil Fruits."
"If that's the case, why didn't you just eat them all? Surely you don't have a limit on the number of Devil Fruits you can consume?"
"Hmph. Once a Devil Fruit forms from the Ten Tails, it immediately disappears, only to reappear somewhere else in the world. Collecting them all is far too troublesome. Besides, eating Devil Fruits doesn't enhance my power in the slightest."
Kaito nodded. He could feel it himself—after absorbing twelve Devil Fruits, his ocular power had reached saturation. No matter how many more he absorbed, the effect would be negligible.
The reason Reishiki dismissed Devil Fruits as defective versions of the God Tree's fruits was simple: unlike the true fruits, they could not trigger the evolutionary process of the Ōtsutsuki.
But for Kaito, who at the time had not yet become an Ōtsutsuki, they had been invaluable. Thanks to them, his bloodline had successfully regressed to its roots, transforming him into a true Ōtsutsuki.
Of course, this was only possible because Kaito possessed the Rinnegan. If another Uchiha or Senju had come to this world, their limit would have been the same as the natives—one Devil Fruit. Any more, and their bodies would collapse under the overwhelming energy, bursting apart.
The Rinnegan's role was absolutely crucial.
Thinking of this, Kaito couldn't help but feel fortunate. Had he not been accidentally thrown into the world of pirates, the only path to evolving this far would have been to become the Ten Tails' Jinchūriki.
Yet in the shinobi world, that Ten Tails bore the will of Ōtsutsuki Kaguya. Even if Kaito eliminated Black Zetsu early, preventing that hidden danger, there was no guarantee he could stop Kaguya from seizing control.
Here, however, things were different. Absorbing the power of the Devil Fruits and using them to evolve into an Ōtsutsuki was, for Kaito, the perfect solution. With this method, both his strength and abilities now far surpassed those of Madara, even as the Ten Tails' Jinchūriki.
Reishiki seemed to realize this as well. He sighed.
"Still, I didn't expect the Devil Fruits to benefit you so much. When you first arrived here, you were laughably weak. Yet now, you've grown to such heights… Even compared to some of the most talented juniors I've known, you're not far behind at all."
Hearing the word "juniors" once again from Reishiki's mouth, Kaito couldn't help but ask,
"You mean Momoshiki and Urashiki?"
Reishiki froze for a moment, frowning in thought.
"I've heard of Momoshiki, but this Urashiki doesn't ring a bell. The junior who left the deepest impression on me was Ōtsutsuki Isshiki. My master had intended to feed me to the Ten Tails and then appoint him as the next guardian. Do you know him? How is he doing now?"
"... "
Kaito was speechless. Of course he knew Isshiki. In Boruto's story, Isshiki had been nothing less than the ultimate boss—his power utterly despair-inducing.
If not for Kurama's sacrifice, unlocking Naruto's Baryon Mode, and Isshiki's container being unable to sustain him for long, there was no way Naruto could ever have defeated him.
And Isshiki's fate had been nothing short of tragic. He may have avoided becoming the Ten Tails' guardian, but the end result was nearly the same. Betrayed by Kaguya from behind, half his body was fed to the Ten Tails. If not for the chance encounter with Jigen, he would have perished on the spot.
Even after finally finding a suitable vessel in Kawaki, he ran headlong into Naruto and Sasuke—the "true protagonists." In the end, he couldn't escape death.
Reishiki, seeing Kaito fall silent, pressed,
"You do know him, don't you? What happened to him?"
"...He's dead."
"Nani?! There exists life in this universe capable of killing an Ōtsutsuki?"
"No. He was betrayed by his own guardian and fed to the Ten Tails."
Kaito didn't mention Naruto. Ultimately, Isshiki's downfall all stemmed from Ōtsutsuki Kaguya.
Reishiki's expression broke at the revelation. Unbelievable. Isshiki—his near-successor—betrayed by his own guardian?
Not only had he failed to display any of the admirable traits expected of an Ōtsutsuki, but he had even suffered such a humiliating end.
Though Reishiki had never been close to Isshiki, he couldn't help but feel a stab of disappointment.
At the same time, curiosity flickered within him. What kind of guardian could possibly have turned against Isshiki?
"Who was Isshiki's guardian?"
"Ōtsutsuki Kaguya."
"Her? That pitifully weak woman?"
"...Yes."
Reishiki was stunned. That Kaguya had been Isshiki's guardian was almost inconceivable. He remembered her clearly, after all.
But unlike Isshiki, whose excellence made him memorable, Kaguya had been etched into his mind for the opposite reason—her weakness.
The Ōtsutsuki clan did distinguish between male and female, but the ratio was severely skewed. A female Ōtsutsuki like Kaguya was already rare enough. Yet her power, compared to the other clansmen of that era, had placed her firmly at the bottom.
And the Ōtsutsuki never showed mercy for weakness, regardless of gender. For one as "feeble" as Kaguya, her fate was inevitable—to become the guardian of some stronger Ōtsutsuki, and in the end, to serve as food for the Ten Tails.
In any world, weakness was a sin.
