Walls make academies. Rules make prisons.
Kael tore down both.
Three weeks after the Dungeon went silent, he opened a door in the lower district. No crest. No gold. Just wood, paint, and a sign.
*Sign:* _The First School. No Bloodline Required. Only Understanding._
The city did not clap. It stared.
*The First Students*
They came at dawn. F-Ranks. Trash. The ones the Academy called experiments.
A boy who could only copy the color of mud.
A girl who copied burps and nothing else.
An old man who copied the shape of shadows.
Nina, with her new hearing.
Twenty more behind them.
*Boy:* "Will they kill us?"
*Kael:* "They'll try. We'll learn faster."
*Lyra:* "What do we teach?"
*Kael:* "The Right Way. Copy the mechanism. Not the myth."
The Book opened.
_Rule Twenty-Five: A school that only copies power makes tyrants. A school that copies understanding makes people._
*Lesson One: Air*
*Kael:* "Stand up."
They stood.
*Kael:* "Breathe in."
They did.
*Kael:* "Now copy this. Air filtration. One trait. Human-compatible."
_Target: Trait, Air Filtration. Source: Tree Concept. Edit: Human-Compatible._
_Success._
The room filled with clean air. Coughs stopped. Heads cleared.
*Girl:* "I can breathe."
*Kael:* "You always could. Now you know how."
*Lyra:* _internal_ "He's not giving them bloodlines. He's giving them lives."
*The Academy's Notice*
By noon, a messenger arrived.
*Messenger:* "By order of Elder Mara, this school is illegal. Bloodline education is Academy law."
*Kael:* "Then I'll write a better law."
_Target: Concept, Law. Source: Academy Edict. Edit: Law Requires Consent._
_Success._
The messenger's scroll went blank. The ink vanished.
*Messenger:* "What did you do?"
*Kael:* "I made your law ask before it commands."
The messenger left. Shaking.
*Lesson Two: Sight*
*Kael:* "Close your eyes."
They did.
*Kael:* "Copy this. Night vision. One trait. Human-compatible."
_Target: Trait, Night Vision. Source: Cat Concept. Edit: Human-Compatible._
_Success._
Eyes opened. The room was bright.
*Old Man:* "I haven't seen this well in forty years."
*Kael:* "You're not young again. You're just unbroken."
*Lyra:* "They'll call this heresy."
*Kael:* "Heresy is just truth before the law catches up."
*The Merchant King Returns*
He came with coin and guards.
*Merchant King:* "You're stealing my customers."
*Kael:* "You sold fear. I'm giving away courage."
*Merchant King:* "Courage doesn't pay rent."
*Kael:* "Then change your rent."
_Target: Concept, Commerce. Source: Merchant King. Edit: Commerce Requires Value._
_Success._
The Merchant King looked at his guards. Really looked. They were tired. Hungry. Afraid.
*Merchant King:* "...What's your price?"
*Kael:* "Help us build desks."
He did. That afternoon.
The Book wrote a line.
_Rule Twenty-Six: An enemy who builds with you is no longer an enemy._
*Lesson Three: Balance*
*Kael:* "Stand on one foot."
They tried. Most fell.
*Kael:* "Copy this. Cat balance. One trait."
_Target: Trait, Balance. Source: Cat Concept. Edit: Human-Compatible._
_Success._
No one fell.
*Nina:* "It feels like the ground likes me."
*Kael:* "It does. You stopped fighting it."
*The Inquisitors Come*
Ten Inquisitors. Same as before. Different orders.
*Inquisitor Lead:* "Close the school."
*Kael:* "No."
_Target: Concept, Force. Source: Inquisitors. Edit: Force Becomes Curiosity._
_Success._
The lead Inquisitor lowered his hand.
*Inquisitor Lead:* "...What are you teaching?"
*Kael:* "How to live without bleeding."
He sat down. He listened.
Nine others did too.
*Lyra:* "You're disarming them."
*Kael:* "I'm disarming the reason they fight."
*Lesson Four: Hearing*
*Kael:* "Nina, teach them."
*Nina:* "Close your eyes. Listen."
_Target: Trait, Keen Hearing. Source: Nina. Edit: Teachable._
_Success._
Twenty students could now hear the city breathing. The school breathing. Each other breathing.
*Student:* "It's loud."
*Nina:* "It's alive."
*Elder Mara's Visit*
She came herself. No guards.
*Elder Mara:* "You're making an army."
*Kael:* "I'm making citizens."
*Elder Mara:* "Citizens who don't obey."
*Kael:* "Citizens who think."
*Elder Mara:* "That's dangerous."
*Kael:* "So is ignorance."
She looked at the students. At the desks. At the clean air.
*Elder Mara:* "If one student dies, I will burn this place."
*Kael:* "If one student dies, I will copy their life and give it back."
She left. But she did not burn it.
*Lesson Five: Law*
*Kael:* "Today we copy a rule."
*Students:* "What rule?"
*Kael:* "The rule that says you're worthless."
_Target: Concept, Worthless. Source: Academy Doctrine. Edit: Worthless Becomes Worthy._
_Success._
The room changed. Not physically. Spiritually. Shoulders straightened. Eyes lifted.
*Boy:* "I'm not F."
*Kael:* "You never were."
The Book wrote a line.
_Rule Twenty-Seven: The most important copy is the one you make of yourself._
*The Saint's Letter*
A letter arrived. No seal. Just ink.
*Letter from Saint Orin:* _"The Academy will send a Saint next. Not me. Be ready. —O"_
*Lyra:* "He's warning us."
*Kael:* "Good. We'll be ready."
_Target: Concept, Preparation. Source: Imagination. Edit: Preparation Becomes Readiness._
_Success._
The school felt calmer. Not because danger was gone. Because they were ready for it.
*Lesson Six: Community*
*Kael:* "Today, no lessons. Today, we eat together."
They did. Bread. Soup. Stories.
*Old Man:* "I was a scribe. They threw me out for copying too slowly."
*Girl:* "I was a maid. They beat me for copying burps."
*Boy:* "I was nobody."
*Kael:* "You're somebody now."
*Nina:* "We're somebody."
The Book wrote a line.
_Rule Twenty-Eight: A school without community is just a factory._
*The Saint Arrives*
Her name was Saint Vale. B-Rank. Storm Law Bloodline. She walked into the courtyard and the sky turned gray.
*Saint Vale:* "Kael Veyrin. This school is heresy."
*Kael:* "Heresy is just a new chapter."
*Saint Vale:* "Law: No Teaching."
The air went heavy. Words stuck in throats.
*Kael:* _internal_ "Conceptual Law. Can be copied."
_Target: Concept, Law. Source: No Teaching. Edit: Law Fails._
_Success._
Words came back.
*Kael:* "Law: Everyone Teaches."
_Success._
Saint Vale's storm broke. The sky cleared.
*Saint Vale:* "You... you wrote a law."
*Kael:* "Yes. And mine had more people in it."
She stared. Then she left. Without a fight.
*The Book's Rule*
That night, the school was full. Twenty students became forty. Word spread.
*Kael:* "Today we rest."
The Book opened.
_Rule Twenty-Nine: The Right Way of Using Copy is to copy until the world has room for everyone._
*Lyra:* "We did it."
*Kael:* "No. We started."
*Nina:* "What's next?"
*Kael:* "The Academy."
