Chapter 48 - The Organization’s First Mission

"Get out! Get out of here right now!"

Akemi suddenly shoved him hard out the door.

Slam!

The door slammed shut behind him, and she locked it besides.

She turned her back to it and leaned against the door.

Her body slid down weakly until she slumped to the floor.

"Dai-kun!"

"Why is it like this? Why?"

Akemi clutched the flowers and sobbed her heart out.

On the very first Valentine's Day since they'd started dating, she hadn't gotten a single gift from Moroboshi Dai, not one phone call, not even a text.

The only one who'd shown her any concern was that scumbag!

"Hmph!"

"Progress bar—80%!"

Makoto let out a cold chuckle.

He knew that day wasn't far off now.

A good man who'd done a hundred good deeds only needed to slip up once, and his whole image would collapse, his favorability crashing overnight.

But!

A bad man like him, though—a scumbag who'd done a hundred rotten things in front of Akemi—

only needed one simple good deed at exactly the right moment to flip his image entirely, sending his favorability shooting straight up.

That bouquet he'd just given her, that chocolate he'd just eaten.

There was a good chance that, quietly, without her even noticing, his favorability had already overtaken Akai Shuichi's.

Good and bad impressions between a man and a woman could always be reversed.

The thing to actually fear was having no impression on her at all!

Ding!

A soft chime.

Akemi's phone screen lit up.

An email had come in.

"Higashino's first mission—kill this man within three days!"

"Once it's done, he may choose a liquor name as his codename, and become an official member of the Organization from then on."

Below the text was a photo.

A middle-aged man in a sharp suit, a little on the heavy side, every inch the capitalist who squeezed his employees dry.

President of Manaka Construction Company—Boss Manaka!

A few seconds later, the email deleted itself automatically, leaving only the photo behind.

It was that man!

Gin!

Powerful as he was, he was still excessively cautious.

Akemi wiped her tears dry and got to her feet.

After checking herself in the mirror, still not quite satisfied, she touched up her makeup a little more.

Only then did she open the door and tell Makoto about the Organization's order.

"Boss Manaka?"

"He seems to be..."

Makoto sifted through his memory, trying hard to recall which episode this name had shown up in.

"He's the president of a construction company."

"A bastard willing to do absolutely anything as long as it turns a profit."

Akemi glanced at him and laughed softly. "Sounds about like you, then."

"Not even close!"

"I'm miles better-looking than that guy!"

Makoto glanced at the photo again, and it finally clicked.

Boss Manaka—the victim in the Art Museum Murder Case!

Nailed to the wall with a single sword thrust by that white-bearded old museum curator.

"What good is being handsome?"

"Can it get the Organization's mission done?"

"Don't forget, you've only got three days!"

Akemi mocked.

Makoto: "Are you worried about me?"

"..."

Akemi froze.

"I am not!"

"What are you even talking about?"

"I'm just reminding you, that's all. If you can't complete the Organization's mission, I'll get dragged down with you."

A few seconds later, her face flushed red, and she hurried to explain herself.

"Thanks."

"I'll get the job done, and come back alive to see you."

Makoto smiled, and without waiting to see whether she'd admit it or not, walked straight off.

"Who said I wanted to see you?"

Akemi pouted.

Even so, she stood at the window and watched the Porsche pull out through the gate.

"Don't die!"

"I hate men who don't keep their word more than anything!"

◇◇◇

The Tokyo Hilton Hotel in Roppongi.

The top-floor Japanese restaurant had an old-world elegance to it.

Women in kimonos slid the doors open, kneeling on either side in respectful welcome.

"President Higashino, I didn't expect you to be this young!"

"Tsk, tsk, you're even more handsome than you look on TV."

"If I had a daughter, I'd want her married off to you this instant!"

The portly Boss Manaka jogged over to greet him.

After all, the young man in front of him was the owner of Tropical Land, and now, on top of that, a famous national hero.

His influence was enormous, whether in the business world, the police world, or the court of public opinion online.

"President Manaka, we're both busy men, so I won't waste time on pleasantries."

Makoto sat down, waved off the attendant pouring drinks beside him, and asked for a cup of hot tea instead.

"Please, President Higashino, go ahead!"

Boss Manaka hurried to gesture for him to continue.

"I hear you bought the Beika Art Museum?"

Makoto asked.

"Oh, you mean that museum!"

"A money-losing venture. Not much profit in it."

"I figured I'd run it for a while and see. If it really doesn't work out, I'll just tear it down and put up something else."

Boss Manaka said.

What he'd actually been after, all along, was just the land underneath it.

As for art, culture, any of that—he had zero interest.

"Still, that museum is one of Beika's older buildings. Seems a shame to tear it down."

"If it could be renovated and turned into a hotel instead, I'd be willing to take over running it."

Makoto got straight to the point, laying out his reason for coming.

"A hotel?"

"Well then, Higashino-san, how do you propose we work out the numbers?"

Boss Manaka got even more direct.

Most five-star hotels were split into two parts.

One was the hotel's owner—whoever owned the building itself.

The other was the hotel's operator, responsible for its day-to-day management.

As for the hotel's earnings, there was a fixed-rate management fee, plus a share split according to whatever ratio was agreed on.

"I'll just take this much!"

"And I'll cover the entire renovation cost myself."

Makoto held up three fingers.

Gulp!

Boss Manaka swallowed hard, a genial capitalist's smile spreading across his round face.

Higashino Makoto — Protagonist. Transmigrated.
