PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALLER'S CONTRACT OF EMPLOYMENT
PARTIES
This Agreement is entered into between:
Wigan Athletic Football Club Limited ("The Club") DW Stadium, Loire Drive, Wigan, WN5 0UH
And
Leonardo Calderon ("The Player") Date of Birth: 31st May 2005 Nationality: British/Italian/Spanish
Agent Representative: Noah Sarin, NS Sports Management
TERM
This contract shall commence on the 1st July 2023 and shall remain in full force until the 30th June 2027, constituting an initial term of four years unless terminated in accordance with the provisions outlined herein.
The Club holds an option to extend this agreement by a further one year until 30th June 2028, exercisable no later than 31st March 2026, subject to mutual agreement on terms.
BASIC WAGE
The Player shall receive a basic wage of £75,000 (Seventy-Five Thousand Pounds) per week, payable monthly in arrears, subject to standard tax and national insurance deductions as required by HMRC.
This wage shall be subject to an annual review at the end of each contract year, with any increase to be agreed in writing between both parties and their respective representatives.
APPEARANCE BONUSES
1. Premier League Appearance Bonus
The Player shall receive an additional £1,000 per appearance for each Premier League match in which he features for a minimum of 45 minutes, whether from the start or as a substitute.
Upon reaching 20 Premier League appearances in a single season, a one-off bonus payment of £40,000 shall be triggered.
Upon reaching 30 Premier League appearances in a single season, a further one-off bonus payment of £25,000 shall be triggered.
2. Cup Appearance Bonus
The Player shall receive £500 per appearance in the FA Cup and EFL Cup combined, for any match in which he features for a minimum of 45 minutes.
PERFORMANCE BONUSES
1. Goal Contributions
The Player shall receive £2,000 per goal scored in the Premier League across the duration of the season.
The Player shall receive £1,500 per assist registered in the Premier League across the duration of the season.
Upon reaching 10 goal contributions (goals and assists combined) in a single Premier League season, a one-off bonus of £20,000 shall be triggered.
Upon reaching 15 goal contributions in a single Premier League season, a further one-off bonus of £15,000 shall be triggered.
2. Clean Sheet Contribution
In recognition of the Player's defensive responsibilities, the Player shall receive £500 for every Premier League match in which Wigan Athletic keep a clean sheet and the Player has featured for a minimum of 60 minutes.
TEAM PERFORMANCE BONUSES
1. Premier League Survival Bonus
Should Wigan Athletic maintain their Premier League status at the end of the 2023/24 season and avoid relegation, the Player shall receive a one-off payment of £100,000 (One Hundred Thousand Pounds).
Should Wigan Athletic maintain their Premier League status at the end of the 2024/25 season, a further payment of £75,000 shall be made.
2. Top Half Finish Bonus
Should Wigan Athletic finish in the top ten of the Premier League at the end of any season covered by this contract, the Player shall receive a one-off payment of £50,000.
3. Cup Progress Bonuses
The Player shall receive the following one-off payments for team progression in cup competitions:
FA Cup Quarter Final reached: £10,000 FA Cup Semi Final reached: £20,000 FA Cup Final reached: £35,000 FA Cup Winners: £60,000
EFL Cup Quarter Final reached: £7,500 EFL Cup Semi Final reached: £15,000 EFL Cup Final reached: £25,000 EFL Cup Winners: £40,000
4. European Competition
Should Wigan Athletic qualify for and participate in any UEFA sanctioned European competition during the term of this contract, the Player shall receive a one-off qualification bonus of £145,000, with further progress bonuses to be negotiated and agreed in a separate addendum at the time of qualification.
INTERNATIONAL APPEARANCE BONUS
Should the Player receive a full senior international cap for any eligible national association during the term of this contract, a one-off payment of £5,000 shall be made upon the occasion of his first senior cap.
LOYALTY BONUS AND MID-SEASON TRANSFER CLAUSE
1. Annual Loyalty Bonus
Provided the Player remains registered as a Wigan Athletic player and has not submitted a formal transfer request at any point during the relevant season, the Player shall receive an annual loyalty payment as follows:
End of 2023/24 season: £150,000 End of 2024/25 season: £175,000 End of 2025/26 season: £200,000
2. Mid-Season Transfer Protection Clause
Should a formal offer for the Player's services be received from another club during the January transfer window in any season covered by this contract, the Player agrees to honour the following conditions in order to protect the Club's sporting interests:
Should the Player elect to remain at Wigan Athletic and decline any such offer received in January, the Club shall make a one-off goodwill payment of £100,000 to the Player at the end of that season, provided the Player has been available for selection for a minimum of 50% of matches in that season.
Should the Player elect to leave in the January window, the loyalty bonus for that season shall be forfeited in its entirety and the annual loyalty bonus for any remaining contract years shall be void.
This clause does not restrict the Club's right to accept or decline offers at any time, nor does it obligate the Club to accept offers on the Player's behalf. It exists solely to protect both parties in the event of mid-season interest.
RELEASE CLAUSE
The Player may be transferred to another club during any summer transfer window for a fixed release clause fee of £107,000,000 (One Hundred and Seven Million Pounds) effective from the 1st July 2024, meaning the clause becomes active after the Player's first full Premier League season.
Prior to 1st July 2024, no release clause shall be active and the Club retains full discretion over any transfer negotiations.
This release clause figure shall be subject to review at the end of each contract year and may be renegotiated upward by mutual agreement should the Player's market value increase significantly.
IMAGE RIGHTS
The Club shall retain the right to use the Player's image, name and likeness for Club related commercial and promotional purposes throughout the duration of this contract at no additional cost to the Club.
The Player retains full rights to all personal commercial arrangements, including existing and future boot deals, personal sponsorships, and endorsement agreements, provided these do not directly conflict with the Club's existing commercial partnerships.
The Player shall make himself available for a minimum of four Club commercial obligations per season, including but not limited to photoshoots, sponsor events, and media days, at no additional cost to the Club.
HOUSING AND RELOCATION
The Club shall provide or contribute toward suitable accommodation for the Player for the duration of the contract should the Player relocate to be closer to the Club's training facilities, with a housing allowance of up to £2,500 per month applicable from the commencement of the contract.
MEDICAL AND FITNESS
The Club accepts full responsibility for the Player's medical care in relation to injuries sustained during training and competitive matches. The Player agrees to comply fully with all medical assessments, rehabilitation programmes and fitness protocols as directed by the Club's medical staff.
TERMINATION
The Club reserves the right to terminate this agreement in the event of serious misconduct, criminal conviction, or sustained failure to meet the fitness and conduct standards outlined in the Club's standard player code of conduct, subject to the appropriate disciplinary procedures being followed.
GOVERNING LAW
This agreement shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales and shall be subject to the rules and regulations of the Football Association, the Premier League, and FIFA as applicable.
