Peter had just come from another routine patrol through the streets of New York. The night had been quiet for once, with only a few small crimes to stop and a couple of people to help along the way.
He swung between the tall buildings with practiced ease, the cool wind rushing past his mask. When he finally reached his own neighborhood he slowed down and slipped through the open window of his bedroom without making a sound. His feet touched the floor softly so that Aunt May would not wake up downstairs.
The furry being sitting on his neck jumped onto his bed and then his pillow making itself comfortable.
The small orange fox stretched its legs, yawned widely, and curled into a soft ball right in the middle of the pillow. Its tails flicked once before settling down.
Peter could not help but smile as he started changing out of the suit. The sight of the little fox claiming the best spot on the bed never failed to lift his mood after a long night.
His life had changed after Naruto had come into his life. He now has someone to rely on and someone he could call a partner.
Before the fox arrived Peter had carried every burden alone. Now he had a constant companion who listened without judgment and who jumped into action whenever trouble appeared.
Whenever he was in a pinch, Naruto came through by using illusions to help him out. The fox could create perfect copies of Peter or of enemies, confuse attackers with false images, and even hide both of them from sight for a few precious seconds. Those tricks had already saved Peter more than once when a fight turned against him.
And more than that Peter had stopped feeling alone and the guilt of keeping his secret with everyone including Ned, MJ and Aunt May. With Naruto knowing and helping him, he felt the burden lighten a little.
He still did not know what Naruto was other than what he calls himself "the ultimate super dangerous kitsune, Naruto dattebayo." The fox said the words with so much energy and pride that Peter often had to bite back a laugh.
As for why Naruto had joined him in his life, his previous "owner" which was apparently Kakashi Hatake, the leader of the Avengers, decided that Peter needed help so he had given him Naruto to give him advice and teach him the ways of a shinobi.
Peter was pretty sure half of that was made up by Naruto himself. The fox loved to tell stories about training under the famous Copy Ninja and about secret missions that sounded far too exciting to be completely true.
Peter sometimes wondered if Kakashi had simply asked the fox to keep an eye on the young hero and Naruto had decided to turn the request into an epic tale of apprenticeship.
Anyways Peter could not believe that the leader of the Avengers, Kakashi Hatake, was keeping an eye on him. The man was a legend. He had seen the video of him fighting the aliens in New York.
He had seen the giant energy armor covering him slaughtering the aliens and that made Peter call him "cool" and made him idolize Kakashi more than he idolized Tony Stark.
The blue skeletal warrior that rose around Kakashi had looked like something from a dream. Peter still rewatched that part of the video whenever he needed a reminder that real heroes existed and that some of them were even stranger than a boy who could stick to walls.
As he changed, he suddenly noticed a pen drive which was not his own on his desk.
He frowned. He picked it up and along with it there was a small note. The paper was folded neatly and on it was written, "For Peter Parker aka Spider-Man. Watch it alone. P.S. It does not contain a virus so you do not have to worry about your super confidential files. Yeah we know about your late night habits."
Peter immediately panicked. Someone knew his identity. Someone knew where he lived. His heart started beating faster and his hands felt cold. "No no no this cannot be happening," Peter mumbled while panicking.
He turned in a small circle, checking the window and the door as if the person who left the drive might still be in the room. The idea that a stranger had stood in his bedroom while he was out on patrol filled him with dread.
His panic seemed to have woken up Naruto who took a moment to stretch and then sat up on the pillow. The fox's blue eyes opened wide and focused on the pen drive in Peter's hand. "Watch what is in it," Naruto said.
"What?" Peter asked, still breathing too quickly.
"Kakashi sensei says you never let your enemies rattle you because that way you already have lost half the battle," Naruto said.
Peter nodded and took a deep breath at that. The words helped him push the panic back a little. Peter sat down at the desk, plugged the pen drive into his laptop, and waited for the files to open. A video started playing almost at once.
A white middle aged man in a black suit appeared on the screen. His expression was polite and almost friendly. "Hello Peter Parker or do you prefer Spider-Man. Sorry for barging into your room unannounced but can I say Aunt May is lovely and she makes quite good cookies. Can you ask her for the recipe?" the man said with a small smile.
Peter's panic returned in a rush. "He met Aunt May?"
Naruto said, "Do not worry she is fine. I have already sensed her downstairs."
"Anyways I am Phil Coulson from an organisation called S.H.I.E.L.D. We are putting up a group of superheroes. And we would like you to be part of the team," the man on the screen continued.
"The group would be like the Avengers but working under my and my boss Nick Fury's leadership," Coulson said. He paused for a moment as if giving Peter time to take in the information.
"You can call them New Avengers but I prefer calling them Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Anyways, meet me and the rest of the team who all would be accepting the offer at the below mentioned location at 7 pm," Phil Coulson said.
As on the screen an address was written as a subtitle. The letters appeared clearly at the bottom so that Peter could read them without trouble.
"And could you please bring your aunt's cookies. Thank you and see you soon Peter," Coulson said as the video ended.
