Each star system and each planet had entirely different ecological environments; species had to adapt to survive by undergoing mutations, and not all planets were as pleasant as Earth-like ones. The environmental conditions on some planets were so severe that intelligent species had to evolve extremely special abilities to survive.
Space Marines also had to adapt to these changes.
