Before she could understand what was happening, the guard grabbed her hand and pulled her through the wall of fire. Angela wanted to scream and she tried to push him away, but it was useless. Heat slammed into her chest and she knew she should be burning, but the pain did not come. Her heart thudded so hard she thought it would break, yet the flames faded and she could hardly feel anything at all. Fear and relief tangled inside her as she opened her eyes.
"We are out of the fire. Move," the guard said.
Angela stared at him, stunned. She kept looking at her arms and clothes, checking and checking because she could not believe she had walked through the flames and come out whole. A cold thought struck her then. She had powers she did not understand, but how did the guard know she would pass through the flames unharmed?
"Who are you?" Angela asked, her brow drawn tight. She needed to trust him, but she needed answers more.
