Shawn is currently very lacking in knowledge.
The design of the mechanical arm on Yvonne Tanner is not perfect. The flesh mutation of this out-of-control person is so severe that Shawn can only sever his right arm and replace it with a simple alchemy mechanical arm.

"To completely cure Yvonne Tanner's flesh mutation, I must design and transform his spine. Only by replacing his mutated vertebrae with a bionic spine can he fully return to normal."
After a complete loss of flesh control, the bones and organs inside Yvonne Tanner's body have all mutated.
Shawn's idea is to replace some of his limbs with alchemy constructs, essentially all organs except the brain. He is a Transcendent on the Wizard Path and can consider fully transforming into a mechanical body or even elementalization in the future.
