The light wasn't a soft glow or a gentle radiance, it was a flash so bright it washed out the dark colors of the forest in an instant, bleaching everything white for a split second that left afterimages burning in Nox's vision. He was in the middle of dodging a lunge from his own spider when the brilliance hit him, and he had to throw up his arm to shield his eyes from the sudden blaze.
When he looked again he froze with his sword halfway through a swing, his legs locked in place, his mind going completely blank.
