Shanks suddenly remembered something and said at once, "Wait for me a bit, I'll be right back!"
In the blink of an eye, he dashed into the cabin. The crew had never seen their captain in such a hurry.
Moments later, Shanks returned holding a sturdy wood staff in his hand.
He muttered to himself, "Captain, today I'll finally pass down the training method you entrusted to me!"
Arima grumbled, "Forget about passing things down. Shanks, you just want to relive the thrill your captain got from beating people with that stick!"
Shanks' face went serious the moment his intent was exposed. "No way! I've got to teach it exactly the way it was taught to me, authentic and unchanged!"
The crew, seeing there was fun to be had, quickly gathered around. Nawaki squeezed in among them as well, eager to watch the show.
He'd never seen his brother-in-law take a beating before!
Sitting cross-legged on the deck, Arima closed his eyes and said, "Alright then, let me experience the 'loving' education your captain gave you back then."
Shanks roared with laughter. "I like the way you put that! Now it's my turn to give you some 'loving' education!"
The moment Arima heard this, he realized he had chosen the wrong words. 'Damn it, did I drink too much today? Only in front of someone like Shanks would I let my guard down like this!'
Shanks grinned smugly. "Don't you dare use Armament Haki to block. If you numb yourself, you won't feel the pain! Pain is the fastest way to awaken Observation Haki!"
Before Arima could retort, Shanks had already swung the staff high and brought it down fast.
Just as it was about to smash into his head, Arima sharply sensed the direction of the strike and hurriedly dodged aside.
But this was Red-Haired Shanks, one of the Four Emperors. Even a casual strike wasn't so easy to avoid.
The staff came down hard on Arima's head, making him clutch his scalp in pain.
His instinct was to use chakra to ease it, but remembering the goal was to awaken Observation Haki, he forced himself to endure.
Shanks laughed boisterously.
"Feels great, doesn't it? One hit like that can make even the toughest men cry out for their parents! It took me a long time to master the art of hitting just right!"
Arima muttered, "You're an idiot. Your captain was even worse, for coming up with such a twisted way to train people!"
Shanks waved it off. "Forget that, just focus! The second strike's coming!"
When the second swing came, Arima relied purely on battle instincts to dodge. Against an ordinary attacker, that would have been enough. But this was Shanks.
Once again, the staff hit its mark. Arima still couldn't grasp the sense of 'seeing' Shanks had spoken about.
Shanks casually twirled the staff and said, "No problem, we've got all night!"
Arima smiled bitterly to himself. 'Shanks, Shanks… if I ever get the chance, I'm definitely going to pass this fine tradition on to that friend of yours someday.'
The third strike came, then the fourth, all the way to the seventeenth.
Arima still hadn't fully grasped it, though he was beginning to faintly "see" the flow of wind in the air when the staff swung toward him.
Watching from the side, Nawaki finally couldn't hold back and shouted encouragement.
"Come on, brother-in-law! You're the Hokage of Konoha!"
Arima, already dizzy from the beating, barely caught the word "Hokage."
A jolt went through his mind. 'That's right. I am the Hokage, the Third Hokage of Konoha!'
At that instant, he suddenly "saw" Shanks swinging the staff toward him and instinctively dodged aside. For the first time, he successfully evaded Shanks' strike.
It was then that Arima truly awakened Observation Haki.
But at the same moment, he also "saw" Shanks' next strike, aimed at such a tricky angle that sitting still, he had no chance of dodging it.
Snapping his eyes open, Arima complained, "Shanks, that's cheating! That strike was obviously unfair!"
Shanks lowered his raised arm and asked, "So you saw it?"
Arima frowned. "You were going to hit my hipbone! There's no way I could've moved in time. That's plain dirty!"
Shanks clapped him on the shoulder with a grin. "I didn't expect your Observation Haki to let you glimpse the future itself. That's an incredibly dangerous ability."
Arima finally realized that what he'd seen were visions of the future.
Sitting back down, he gathered chakra in his hands and used Medical Ninjutsu to quickly soothe the pain in his head.
Watching this, Shanks thought, 'So many mysterious abilities… and none of them are Devil Fruit powers. Just where is his homeland, really?'
Once Arima healed himself, he stood up and said solemnly, "Shanks, thank you for your help."
Shanks waved it off. "It was nothing. Even if you hadn't met me, you'd have learned from someone else eventually."
Arima shook his head. "No, it's different. I'll remember this debt."
Shanks draped an arm over his shoulders and whispered, "If you ever get the chance, find me one of the twelve Supreme Grade Swords. Maybe the Black Blade."
Arima had no idea what the Supreme Grade Swords were, nor the legend of the Black Blade. He thought it was just an ordinary sword, like the Kusanagi Blade he once gave Sakura.
So he agreed without hesitation.
Shanks burst into hearty laughter. "Just don't curse me later when the time comes!"
Arima felt something was off, but a promise made couldn't be taken back. Not that he intended to, he'd find that Black Blade when the time came!
He then asked, "What about the last type, Conqueror's Haki?"
Shanks shook his head. "That can't be taught. Across the whole sea, maybe one in a million people is born with the potential to awaken it."
"How do you awaken it, then?" Arima asked.
Shanks smirked. "When your spirit overflows, then it awakens."
As he spoke, an overwhelming pressure burst forth from him and surged toward Arima.
Instinctively, Arima opened his Rinnegan and released equal force in return. But he immediately sensed the nature of his Rinnegan's pressure was fundamentally different from Shanks'.
So he unleashed his newly awakened Armament and Observation Haki in the form of raw willpower.
In the next instant, arcs of crimson lightning crackled from Arima's body, spreading outward until they collided with Shanks' Conqueror's Haki.
The clash was so violent that most of the crew collapsed unconscious on the spot, including Nawaki. The impact even caused irreversible damage to the deck.
Seeing this, Shanks quickly withdrew his Haki, groaning, "My Adam Wood deck!"
Arima had just awakened the Conqueror's Haki, and couldn't control its power. So, Shanks could only blame himself, he had been the one to ask for the Black Blade after all!
Now that Arima had mastered all three forms of Haki, his already formidable strength soared to new heights. On the seas, he would be unstoppable.
Looking at the ruined deck, Arima said sheepishly, "Sorry, I overdid it. Let me fix this."
He clasped his hands together and quickly entered Sage Mode. The Sage Mode of this world was slightly different from what he knew in the shinobi world.
Shanks almost told him to leave it, but the strange markings that appeared on Arima's face made him curious. Even if it cost some Adam Wood, it was worth watching.
Arima slapped his hands on the deck, and the Adam Wood stretched and grew, closing every crack until the deck was whole again.
As thanks, Arima then performed Wood Release. Before long, a thick Adam tree sprouted from the deck, its roots twisting below while its branches arched carefully around the mast.
Exiting Sage Mode, Arima turned to Shanks and said, "There you go, a treasure tree. If you need materials in the future, just cut from it."
The onlookers who were still conscious nearly dropped their jaws to the floor.
Shanks circled Arima a few times before stopping in front of him.
"You really are incredible. Top-tier talent, endless techniques… looks like the New World is about to see the rise of its fifth Emperor."
