Chapter 10 - Trial by Combat

Night had fallen over Scorchgate. A gentle breeze rustled the leaves outside, and the faint flicker of lanterns lit up the quiet streets. Inside a dimly lit inn, Cairo Flamesworth and the rest of the Ashen Vanguard sat around a wooden table, the warm glow of a single lantern casting long shadows across their faces.

The air was heavy. The events at the Queen's banquet earlier still weighed heavily on their minds.

Serene Lioren broke the silence, her voice soft yet firm. "Ignis Arcanum Academy? So that was your plan all along?"

Cairo leaned back in his chair, arms crossed over his chest. A faint smile tugged at the corner of his lips. "Exactly. Before we can put our grand plan into motion, we need access to the castle. I need to speak with someone on the inside—someone who can confirm a suspicion I've held for a long time."

He looked around the table, meeting each of their eyes. There was a seriousness to his expression now, one that none of them could ignore.

"If I'm right," he said, "then everything changes. Joining the academy lets us hit two birds with one stone. We grow stronger, we learn the new ways of magic and warfare… and we gather the intel we need."

Zayn scoffed and leaned forward, arms on the table. "And how does that pay respect to our forefathers?"

Cairo didn't flinch. His voice sharpened.

"Don't forget how the kingdom treated us. Our family names were dragged through the dirt. We were marked as traitors, exiled by history. All for something they never did."

His eyes flickered with quiet fury.

"In a world where power, legacy, and fortune decide your worth, we're here to fight for something deeper. We're not doing this just for us. We're doing this for them—for the ancestors who were erased and betrayed. We'll reclaim what they tried to destroy."

The room fell silent. Slowly, one by one, the rest of the group nodded. They understood. This wasn't just about survival or glory. It was about justice.

Maevis rested a hand on her blade's hilt. "Whatever it takes," she whispered.

Aurella closed her eyes. "The spirits say the path ahead is rough... but it's the right one."

Zayn leaned back, arms behind his head. "Alright then. Let's bring the storm."

Cairo stood, his voice calm but resolute. "We break through that wall tomorrow… and the rest will follow."

The morning sun bathed the city in golden light. A cool breeze swept through Scorchgate, but the air was thick with anticipation.

The royal arena was alive with energy. Thousands filled the grandstands—nobles, knights, mages, and commoners alike—gathered to witness the unprecedented trial. The Ashen Vanguard, commoners and descendants of so-called traitors, were about to face Flamguardia's Main Force, led by none other than General Lucious Morningstar.

On the arena floor, Cairo stood tall, his expression calm. Zayn cracked his knuckles, already smirking. Serene adjusted her grip on her staff. Aurella whispered to the spirits. Maevis's shadow shifted unnaturally, her hand on her blade.

Across from them, the elite knights of Flamguardia stood in formation—sharp, disciplined, and deadly. Lucious towered in the center, crimson armor gleaming like blood under sunlight.

From the royal balcony, Queen Alice rose from her seat.

"Let this trial be fair. Let the strongest prove their worth. Begin!"

A horn blared.

The battle erupted.

Zayn moved like lightning, charging headfirst into the fray. His fists crackled with electricity as he clashed with one of Lucious's captains, but the enemy struck back with brute force, slamming Zayn into the arena wall.

Aurella summoned a swirl of spirits to bind the front lines, but the enemy was too fast, too disciplined. A blast of wind knocked her off her feet.

Serene darted to the side, aiming to disrupt the mages from behind—but a counter-spell detonated beneath her feet, sending her tumbling.

Maevis disappeared into shadow, her blades seeking weak points. But the Main Force's light mages anticipated her, flooding the area with a brilliant burst that forced her back into visibility.

In just minutes, the battlefield had shifted. Four of the Ashen Vanguard were down—wounded, exhausted, but not broken.

Only Cairo remained standing.

Lucious stepped forward, sword in hand. The crowd hushed as he pointed it at Cairo.

"Flamesworth. That name has no place in the academy. It reeks of betrayal and disgrace. Your ancestor's flame burned bright, but it scorched this kingdom."

Cairo wiped blood from his lip, his eyes burning. "You know nothing of Robert Flamesworth."

Lucious roared and charged. Their blades met with a thunderous crash.

It was strength versus will, steel against fire. Cairo blocked, dodged, and countered—but Lucious was relentless. His strength was overwhelming, and with one heavy swing, he shattered Cairo's sword.

Lucious raised his weapon for the finishing blow.

"You are nothing! Your name will be forgotten!"

But just before the strike landed—

Cairo vanished.

A sudden flicker, a swirl of flames. In the blink of an eye, he was behind Lucious, dagger drawn, its glowing edge pressed against the general's neck.

Gasps erupted from the stands.

Lucious froze.

"Checkmate," Cairo said quietly. "I could've ended it."

Lucious's face contorted with rage.

"Enough!" Queen Alice's voice rang out, sharp as a blade.

The arena froze. Cairo lowered his weapon and stepped back, bowing to the Queen with blood on his brow but fire in his eyes.

Queen Alice stood. "Ashen Vanguard. You have passed the trial."

Cheers erupted. Some booed. Most were simply stunned.

Lucious said nothing, jaw clenched tight.

The Queen continued. "Welcome to Ignis Arcanum Academy."

Cairo turned toward his battered team. They were smiling now—tired, bruised, but smiling.

"We did it," Serene said softly.

Maevis nodded. "Together."

Aurella exhaled in relief, the spirits humming gently.

Zayn raised a fist. "Ashen Vanguard, baby!"

Cairo turned back one last time toward the Queen, locking eyes with her.

This is only the beginning.
