The ruined streets of Sector 7 did not become a graveyard for the human Vanguard. They became a meat-grinder for the alien scouts.
For six hours, the squad moved through the ash-choked ruins like a localized natural disaster. They didn't hide. With Prince Zhao Long's battle-crazed tectonic gravity drawing the patrols in, and Kai's hyper-lethal, pseudo-solid strikes waiting for them, the Exarch-Kin infantry walked straight into a slaughterhouse.
Thirty. Kai ducked under a glowing green bio-plasma blast, his [Agility: 35] making him look like a phantom in the grey ash. He planted his boot, rotating his hips, and brought the Sovereign's Edge around in a blinding horizontal arc. The high-frequency meteor steel shattered the knee joint of the massive crystalline alien. Before it could fall, Zhao Long dropped from a ruined balcony above, his Tier-2 gauntlets caving the creature's visor-carapace inward with a sickening crunch.
Fifty.
A patrol of four diamond-scaled foot-soldiers tried to flank them through a shattered storefront. Maya was waiting. Anchored by the Earth Dragon density of her Basilisk, Crag, she slammed her massive Deep-Earth Shale shield into the lead alien, completely halting its momentum. Princess Yan immediately followed up, tossing a vial of highly corrosive, stabilized alchemical acid directly into the creature's four-way jaw, boiling it from the inside out.
Seventy. Robert didn't even blink as the seventieth Exarch-Kin charged him. He simply pointed his finger. The Void-snake, Null, hissed, and a localized black hole ripped open the space directly inside the alien's chest cavity, violently imploding its internal bio-mechanics.
The squad regrouped in the shadow of a massive, melted transit overpass. They were covered in soot, sweat, and the glowing, translucent blue blood of the Exarch-Kin.
Seventy Tier 1 (Peak) aliens lay dead behind them. The Imperial Academy's experimental Incubation Loop and the brutal thirty-day Titan-Pulse crucible had worked flawlessly. They were not preying mantises trying to stop a chariot; they were heavy cavalry running down infantry.
"The foot-soldiers are predictable," Kai breathed, resting the heavy Sovereign's Edge over his shoulder. Anvil, his metallic Qilin-hound, chewed on a harvested piece of diamond-scale, its jaws easily crushing the dense material. "They rely entirely on their biological armor. They don't use martial arts."
"They don't need to," Zhao Long grunted, wiping blue blood off his black star-iron gauntlets. "If we didn't have Tier-2 weapons and Stage 1 vessels, we wouldn't even be able to scratch them. Look."
Zhao Long pointed down the long, ash-covered avenue.
At the end of the street stood the Central Spire. It had once been the administrative heart of the mining city, but the aliens had mutated it. The skyscraper was wrapped in a thick, pulsating network of biomechanical veins, glowing with a sickly, radioactive green light. The massive steel doors at the base had been melted down and replaced by a towering, fleshy, crystalline membrane.
And standing guard before that membrane were the Vice Leaders.
Kai's Transmigrator System flared instantly, projecting a harsh, flashing crimson warning across his vision.
[CRITICAL THREAT DETECTED: MULTIPLE HIGH-TIER ENTITIES]
[Target 1: Exarch-Kin Vice Leader (Blade-Class)]
[Target 2: Exarch-Kin Vice Leader (Siege-Class)]
[Cultivation: Tier 2 (Mid-Crystallized Core)]
[Assessment: Targets possess vastly superior biological density and weaponized appendages. Extreme Caution Advised.]
The two Vice Leaders were completely different from the mindless foot-soldiers. They stood twelve feet tall, their carapaces not clear like diamonds, but a terrifying, light-absorbing obsidian-black crystal.
The Blade-Class possessed six arms, each ending in a serrated, naturally grown scythe that hummed with concentrated kinetic energy. The Siege-Class was vastly wider, its chest heavily heavily armored, possessing two massive, cannon-like appendages that dripped with boiling, highly unstable green plasma.
"Tier 2 Mid," Zhao Long whispered, his magma-veins flaring as his battle lust spiked. "A full sub-realm above us. Their cores are fully crystallized."
"They're guarding the door to the Prime," Kai said, his molten-gold eyes locked onto the towering monsters. "Wall and Void, hold the Siege-Class. Long, you and I are going to dismantle the Blade-Class. Move!"
The squad exploded into action.
The Siege-Class alien registered the incoming threat. Its four-way jaw unhinged, letting out a mechanical, grinding roar, and it raised its massive plasma cannons.
THOOM! THOOM!
Two spheres of hyper-condensed, radioactive green plasma the size of carriages shot down the avenue.
"Anchor!" Maya roared, slamming her shield into the bedrock.
"Eat it!" Robert screamed, stepping right behind her and opening a massive, Grade-3 Void canopy.
The plasma hit the void. The sheer volume of Tier 2 (Mid) energy violently shook Robert's core, forcing blood from his nose, but the Void-snake swallowed the brunt of the destructive magic, while Maya's immovable wall deflected the kinetic splash-damage into the surrounding buildings, completely vaporizing the concrete.
While the backline held the heavy artillery, Kai and Zhao Long hit the Blade-Class Vice Leader simultaneously.
Zhao Long went high, launching himself off the ground with tectonic gravity, bringing both of his spikes gauntlets down in a catastrophic meteor smash.
The alien didn't flinch. It crossed its upper four scythes, catching the Prince's massive strike perfectly. The kinetic shockwave shattered the ash beneath them, but the obsidian-crystal arms held firm. The alien's lower two arms immediately snapped forward, aiming to impale Zhao Long mid-air.
"Not today!" Kai roared.
Kai blurred into the alien's blind spot. He channeled his entire Tier 2 (Pseudo-Solid) core into the Sovereign's Edge.
"Sovereign's Breath: Water-Metal Shear!"
He swung the sword with maximum high-frequency resonance directly at the alien's lower right arm. The Tier-2 meteor steel met the Tier 2 (Mid) obsidian crystal.
SCREEECH-SNAP!
The blade didn't cut cleanly, but the sheer, agonizing vibration, combined with Kai's [Strength: 40], violently shattered the crystalline structure. The alien's lower arm blew apart into a shower of black glass.
The beast shrieked, its mechanical voice glitching. It violently spun, throwing Zhao Long back, and swung its remaining five scythes at Kai in a blinding tornado of razor-sharp crystal.
Kai didn't retreat. His Stage 2 Titan-Pulse vessel was built for this. He raised his sword, parrying the heavy blows. Clang! Clang! Clang! Each strike sent a numbing shock through Kai's arms, the pure physical power of the Tier 2 (Mid) beast desperately trying to crush his pseudo-solid core.
"Now, Yan!" Kai yelled over the grinding steel.
Princess Yan, sprinting along the flank with the Sphinx cub stabilizing the chaotic air, threw three massive alchemical flasks directly at the alien's chest.
CRASH!
The flasks detonated, coating the alien's torso in a hyper-volatile, super-cooled liquid nitrogen variant. The obsidian crystal instantly froze, the temperature drop making the dense biological armor dangerously brittle.
"Shatter it!" Zhao Long roared, recovering from his fall and charging back in.
Kai and Zhao Long struck as one. Kai swung horizontally, aiming for the frozen chest cavity, while Zhao Long delivered a devastating tectonic uppercut to the creature's jaw.
KRAK-OOOOOM!
The brittle, frozen obsidian carapace violently shattered under the dual Tier-2 impact. Kai's blade cleanly severed the alien's spine, while Zhao Long's uppercut completely pulverized its head.
The Blade-Class collapsed, reduced to a pile of twitching, black crystal shards.
With the primary melee threat dead, Kai and Zhao Long immediately pivoted toward the Siege-Class.
The massive alien was overheating, desperately trying to break through Maya and Robert's flawless defense.
"Its cannons are venting heat!" Yan shouted, pointing at the glowing, open gills along the creature's armored ribs.
Kai didn't hesitate. He poured his remaining Qi into his boots, crossing the distance in a single, explosive leap. The alien tried to track him, but Kai was too fast. He landed directly on the alien's massive plasma cannon.
He reversed his grip on the Sovereign's Edge and drove the glowing, high-frequency blade straight down into the creature's open, venting heat-gills.
The blade sank deep into the beast's localized biological reactor.
"Long, hit the pommel!" Kai yelled, stepping back.
Zhao Long blurred forward, his Earthly Fiend foundation roaring, and punched the flat pommel of Kai's sword with all his might, driving the three-foot blade entirely into the alien's chest cavity.
The Siege-Class froze. A blinding, radioactive green light began to violently expand from within its cracks.
"Take cover!" Kai roared.
The squad dove behind Maya's heavily anchored shield just as the Siege-Class Vice Leader violently detonated. The explosion vaporized a hundred-foot crater into the avenue, wiping the twin wardens from existence.
Kai lay on his back behind Maya's shield, panting heavily. His pseudo-solid core was throbbing, desperately trying to pull ambient Qi back into his exhausted meridians.
"Two... two Tier 2 Mid commands," Robert wheezed, his void-snake practically unconscious on his wrist. "We actually killed them."
Zhao Long was laughing weakly, his obsidian skin littered with shallow cuts from the crystal shrapnel. "We are the absolute apex, Hart. The entire Vanguard is going to look at us like gods."
Kai smiled, sitting up to retrieve his sword from the blast crater.
But as his hand touched the hilt of the Sovereign's Edge, the smile vanished from his face.
The ambient Qi in the air completely stopped moving.
It didn't just stop; it died. The howling, ash-choked wind of Sector 7 instantly fell dead silent. The glowing, radioactive fire from the alien explosion was snuffed out as if an invisible, colossal hand had pinched the flames.
"What... what is that?" Maya whispered, her voice trembling. Her Iron-Plate Basilisk, Crag, was whimpering, aggressively trying to bury itself beneath her shield.
Kai slowly turned his head toward the Central Spire.
The massive, fleshy membrane doors had silently melted open.
A figure stepped out of the darkness.
It wasn't towering like the Vice Leaders. It was exactly the size of a human. It wore elegant, perfectly tailored bio-armor that shimmered with an impossible, absolute black-diamond density. It had no face, only a smooth, featureless, perfectly polished obsidian visor.
[CRITICAL SYSTEM FAILURE IMMINENT]
[Target: Exarch Prime]
[Cultivation: Tier 2 (Peak - True Solid Core)]
[WARNING: HOST SURVIVAL PROBABILITY < 1%]
The Exarch Prime didn't draw a weapon. It didn't roar. It didn't cast a spell.
It simply released its aura.
The pressure hit Squad 7 like a falling moon. It wasn't kinetic force; it was the pure, unadulterated weight of a fully crystallized, perfect Tier 2 (Peak) soul.
CRACK.
The bedrock beneath them shattered. Kai was violently forced to his knees, his Stage 2 Titan-Pulse muscles screaming as if he had just been tossed under a hydraulic press. Beside him, Prince Zhao Long was slammed entirely face-first into the dirt, the tectonic gravity of his Rank 10 foundation completely overridden by the alien's sheer spiritual mass.
Maya, Robert, and Yan collapsed, pinned to the ground, unable to even draw a single breath of air.
The Exarch Prime slowly tilted its featureless head, looking down at the insects groveling in its ash.
