Chapter 40 - Splitting Up

As the duo entered the hallway, they saw a fenced area with a busted barred door. Michelle looked at the barred door with a hum. "With the GrabPack hands, I can pull the busted bars and squeeze through," she said before looking at CatNap. "You, however..."

CatNap approached the fenced area with his claws extended before grabbing the upper part of it. Soon after, CatNap tore the fenced area down before pushing the debris away. "That works too," Michelle said before the duo walked forward.

After the duo entered the room, Michelle looked at the fenced area with a large console at the center. "That console can open the other cell blocks..." she said in a low voice.

The phone started ringing, which made Michelle grab it off the GrabPack's hook before the duo looked at it. "Ollie?" she asked.

Soon after, the duo heard static coming from the phone. "—you hear— Too much interfer— Make your way to— There's something— —octor is—" they heard more static before Ollie was cut off.

Michelle sighed a bit as she hung the phone on one of the GrabPack's hooks. "I'm guessing that's the Doctor's doing," she said. "What even is his deal?"

CatNap remained silent until he looked down with somber eyes. "HE CREATED US..." he said in a low voice.

Michelle turned to CatNap, confused. "He created you? What do you mean by—" she stopped herself at the realization before her eyes widened. "Wait... he's the reason you and the others... he's responsible for the Bigger Bodies Initiative?"

CatNap slowly nodded. "HIS REAL NAME IS DOCTOR HARLEY SAWYER..." he said. "HE WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE EXPERIMENTS BEFORE HE BECAME ONE HIMSELF..."

Michelle turned her head to the smaller TV screens in the fenced area. "I see..." she said in a low voice.

Michelle turned her head to CatNap. "Then let me ask you this... is he even worth saving?" she asked.

CatNap growled, and his ears pointed back. "NO..." he said.

Michelle nodded. "Then I agree with you," she said, which made CatNap's ears perk up and look at her. "Once we regroup back at this Safe Haven, we'll need to come up with a plan to deal with this bastard."

CatNap looked down a bit with somber eyes, and his ears drooped before he lay on the ground. "WILL THEY... ACCEPT ME...?" he asked.

Michelle stared at CatNap with a slight frown before approaching him and placing her hands against his cheeks, which made him look at her. "I'll admit, it'll be difficult..." she said.

Michelle gently smiled at CatNap. "But... I'll do everything I can to convince the others that you're on our side and not the Prototype's," she continued.

CatNap stared at Michelle before his ears perked up, and he closed his eyes, purring. "THANK YOU, ANGEL..." he said.

Michelle smiled at CatNap before glancing at the fenced console; after she pulled her hands away from him, she approached it. As Michelle entered the fenced area, she saw a few openings and a door leading to the warden's office at the back.

Michelle looked up and saw an empty slot above the door. "There's gotta be something that can open the warden's office..." she said before walking forward.

As Michelle entered the office on the left, she spotted an emblem on the desk before grabbing the left arm cannon's handle. "Knowing this company, they probably made fakes," she said before aiming at it and pulling the trigger.

The blue hand shot forward and grabbed the emblem before it retracted back to Michelle. "I'll drop these in the hallway and see which one is the real one," she continued as she grabbed the right arm cannon's handle before entering the opposite room.

Soon after, Michelle spotted the emblem in the room before aiming the right arm cannon at it and pulling the trigger. The red hand shot forward and grabbed the emblem before it retracted back to Michelle.

When Michelle was in the hallway, she pulled the triggers, which made both hands let go of the emblems before walking forward; she entered the far right room and looked around before walking forward.

When Michelle reached the desk, she saw a note in the chair, which made her let go of the right arm cannon's handle before picking it up.

As Michelle looked at the note, she clicked her tongue, annoyed. "It's a journal from one of those bastard guards..." she said. "Apparently, this Cole guy used to be a 'Resource Extraction Specialist'... whatever the hell that means..."

As Michelle read the note, she was shocked. "I had no idea he lost people close to him..." she continued. "And while others got a pat on the back and were placed in areas that didn't deal with the toys, he was reassigned to a 'Shelf Keeper'... that's a fancy way of saying a prison guard."

Soon after, Michelle laid the note on the desk. "He may be just as bad as this company, but... he might not have been as bad as the others," she said before leaving the room.

When Michelle entered the opposite room, she spotted an emblem on the office chair before aiming the left arm cannon at it and pulling the trigger. The blue hand shot forward and grabbed the emblem before it retracted back to Michelle.

As Michelle left the room, she looked at the warden's office and spotted a broken door window before approaching it. When Michelle looked through the broken door window, she noticed that the symbol in the back matched the emblem in the blue hand.

Michelle looked at the emblem with a chuckle. "So, you were the real one all this time; so typical for the company," she said before aiming the left arm cannon at the empty slot above the door and pulling the trigger.

The blue hand shot forward and placed the emblem in the slot, which opened the door before it retracted back to Michelle; she entered the room and spotted a yellow VHS tape on the desk.

Michelle let go of the left arm cannon's handle before approaching the desk and picking up the tape. "What do you have?" she asked herself.

Michelle turned her head to the back and saw a TV with a yellow VHS player under it in the left corner before approaching it.

After Michelle put the tape inside the player, she looked at the screen as it booted up. Soon after, Michelle heard the emergency alarms and screeching in the background. "Oh God, no no no no no," a man on the TV said in a panic.

Michelle crossed her arms with a slight hum. "I'm guessing that's the Warden himself..." she said.

Soon after, Michelle heard a door close in the background. "Warden?" the Doctor asked.

"Doctor! Doctor, what's going on?! What's happening, it's—" the Warden was interrupted when the Doctor sighed. "Yes..."

The Doctor groaned a bit. "Yes, I can hear it," he continued.

The Doctor hummed. "They've staged quite the rebellion..." he said before chuckling. "Remarkable, 1006."

"How could this happen?" the Warden asked. "There's failsafes. Security measures. They..."

Michelle heard the Warden panic a bit. "It's impossible..." he said.

"Personal agendas have long been the downfall of this company," the Doctor said. "Is it unreasonable to believe there were conspirators? Playtime is filled with vipers and backstabbers."

"But... but without executive access... how could anyone even get through?" the Warden asked. "Leith, Stella, Eddie... only the four of us have that kind of clearance."

Michelle was annoyed and looked away. "Of course, that asshole would have a way of escaping this place..." she said in a low voice.

"Does any of that matter now? It's your life you have to protect," the Doctor said. "You have executive access."

Michelle was shocked and looked at the TV. "For all the good it does me! Opening a door at a time won't get me to the exit, not with those THINGS everywhere," the Warden said.

Michelle heard the Warden sigh. "You didn't see what I saw. You didn't see the trail of limbs down the hall, didn't hear the things eating. The... the wet crunches of bones... God, I..." he continued.

Michelle was concerned. "There is... something you can do, Warden. I can help you," the Doctor said.

"How? You're stuck in there. You can't—" the Doctor interrupted the Warden. "My body's here, sure... but my mind..."

The Warden sounded shocked. "...What?" he asked.

"The Omni-Hand... if you give it to me, I can get you anywhere. I'll have control over everything," the Doctor said. "I can shut some doors, open others. I can make you a pathway that leads right to the exit."

Michelle shook her head. "I wouldn't take a deal like that... not from him..." she said in a low voice.

"I don't... I don't know..." the Warden said hesitantly.

"If you want to wait to get torn to pieces, that's your prerogative, but look at your immediate options, Warden. What choice other than this gets you out of here alive?" the Doctor asked.

"...I'm giving you the tool. Just get me out of here. Please," the Warden said.

"Of course... you've made a smart decision, Warden," the Doctor said. "I promise I'll get you out of here safe and sound."

When the TV turned off, Michelle stared at it. "Something tells me he backstabbed him after he got what he wanted..." she said before uncrossing her arms and leaving the Warden's office.

After Michelle stepped out of the hallway, CatNap looked at her as she approached the large console before standing up. "DID YOU FIND ANYTHING...?" he asked.

Michelle sighed. "Just a journal log and a video between the Doctor and the Warden; nothing too glamorous," she said before looking at the red hand scanner.

Before Michelle could do anything, CatNap approached the barred area on the far left, which made her look at him, surprised. "ALLOW ME TO GO THROUGH HERE..." he said.

Michelle stared at CatNap. "Is there a reason for this?" she asked.

CatNap remained silent before looking away. "I SMELL BLOOD AND DECAY AROUND HERE..." he said.

Michelle felt squeamish before looking away and covering her mouth a bit. "Very well... just be quick..." she said in a low voice.

CatNap nodded and grabbed the top of the fencing area with his claws before tearing it and setting it to the side. After CatNap entered the area, he saw a door to the left before slashing at the wall, destroying it.

CatNap saw corpses littered around the hallway before walking forward. When CatNap turned right, he saw a pile of corpses hanging by metal bars, broken fence pieces, and a small gap.

CatNap stared at the corpses. "NO HUMAN SHOULD SEE THIS... ESPECIALLY ANGEL..." he said in a low voice before walking forward.

When CatNap was close to the structure, he pushed the metal debris and hanging corpses out of the way before walking forward.

When CatNap looked down, he saw a red keycard next to a corpse on the left. CatNap carefully picked up the red keycard. "THIS WILL BE USEFUL TO ANGEL..." he said before wrapping it around his tail and walking away.

As Michelle looked at the console, she heard footsteps, which made her turn her head to the left; she saw CatNap approach her before turning to him. "Find anything?" she asked.

CatNap held the red keycard out with his tail through the opening. "ONLY THIS..." he said.

Michelle smiled and grabbed the red keycard before CatNap's tail let go. "Nice find," she said before approaching the console and putting it in the red keycard slot.

Soon after, another red scanner activated, which made Michelle grab the right arm cannon's handle before aiming at it and pulling the trigger; the red hand shot forward and touched the scanner, activating it.

Michelle caught a glimpse of the Doctor on one of the TV screens before he disappeared, which concerned her.

Soon after, the red hand retracted back to Michelle before the upper left gate opened, which made her let go of the right arm cannon's handle and step out of the fenced area before the duo approached it. After Michelle went through the gates, CatNap destroyed them before following her.

As the duo entered the prison block, the vault door behind them closed, which made them look at it. "Well... if it's anything like the other prison block, there should be a control room with a keypad," Michelle said before looking at CatNap. "Let's find a way to get inside it."

CatNap nodded before the duo walked forward; after Michelle crouched under some debris and walked forward, he stepped over it before following her.

Alarms started going off, which shocked the duo and made them look around; soon after, Red Smoke started filling the room, which made their eyes widen. "Don't fight... fighting will only make it work quicker," the Doctor said.

Michelle quickly covered her mouth and nose with her hands. "Damn it, not good!" she shouted.

CatNap quickly picked Michelle up by his tail before placing her on his back. "TRY TO HOLD YOUR BREATH A LITTLE LONGER..." he said.

Michelle nodded and held onto CatNap as he started slashing at the metal fence roof nearby. When CatNap made a large hole, he leaped down and looked around; Michelle tried looking around, but her vision started getting blurry.

Soon after, Michelle spotted a busted pipe with a missing valve. "We need to find the valve," she said as she started coughing a bit before holding her breath.

CatNap nodded before sprinting forward; when he spotted debris, he cleared it away with his claws. Soon after, CatNap spotted a room ahead and sprinted forward. Soon after, Michelle started hearing things. Hurry, CatNap... she thought.

As CatNap entered the room and looked around, Michelle spotted a note on a desk, which made her grab the left arm cannon's handle before aiming at it and pulling the trigger; the blue hand shot forward and grabbed it.

After the blue hand retracted back to Michelle, she grabbed the note off it before letting go of the left arm cannon's handle and looking at it.

Michelle looked at the note with sad eyes. This one is a weekly checkup on Experiment 1424; the poor thing was disconnected from its surroundings and had all these conditions, including catalepsy and memory loss, she thought before she let go of it and held onto CatNap.

When CatNap turned his head to the right, he spotted the valve, which made him grab it and sprint back. When CatNap was close to the broken pipe, he placed the valve in the missing spot before quickly twisting it.

After the pipe was fixed, they saw a red hand scanner. Michelle grabbed the right arm cannon's handle before aiming at it and pulling the trigger; the red hand shot forward and touched it, activating it.

After the scanner finished, Michelle saw that the colors around her started going inverted before letting go of the right arm cannon's handle.

CatNap quickly wrapped his tail around Michelle before placing her near the opening. "GET TO THE ROOM ABOVE... HURRY...!" he shouted.

Michelle nodded before going through the opening and quickly climbing the stairs; she approached the door before grabbing the doorknob and twisting it.

After Michelle opened the door, she entered the control room and closed it behind her before gasping for air. Michelle looked down and tried to catch her breath. "That was... way too close for comfort..." she said in a low voice.

As Michelle looked around the room, she spotted a cutout of a petite pink slime toy with a cutesy smile, pink slime axolotl frills coming out of her cheeks, and an axolotl tail with her left arm raised in the top left corner. Michelle stared at the cutout. "Is that..." she said in a low voice before approaching it.

When Michelle was close to the cutout, she pressed the button. "Hiya! I'm Suzy! I slime like I mean it!" it shouted.

Michelle pressed the button again. "Have you met my friend Doey? He can ooze his way into your heart," the cutout continued before giggling.

Michelle pressed the button again. "I'm all about that goo-d life... get it? Because I'm goopy..." the cutout said.

Michelle pressed the button again. "I might be a little messy, but it's slime well spent," the cutout continued.

Michelle pressed the button again. "If you stick with me, I brighten any gloomy day with glee!" the cutout shouted.

When Michelle pressed the button again, she heard a broken toy theme song from the cutout before it faded. Michelle lowered her hand while staring at the cutout. "I'm so close to finding you and your brother, Katie... just hang on for a little longer..." she said.

When Michelle turned around, she saw a whiteboard with a calendar on it in the distance. "The last one had the code in the form of a Hangman game on a whiteboard," she said before approaching it. "What do you hold?"

When Michelle was close to the whiteboard, she saw a few letters on different days, which made her hum a bit. Michelle looked down and saw a sticky note in the corner before crouching to it. "Check the CAGE..." she read in a low voice.

When Michelle stood up properly and looked at the calendar, she saw an 'E' on Tuesday, a 'C' on Wednesday, a 'G' on Thursday, and an 'A' on Saturday.

Michelle followed the numbers that spelled the word 'CAGE' before nodding. "3-6-4-2... that's my code," she said before approaching the main console.

When Michelle was close to the keypad, she typed the code, which made the case covering the red button open. When Michelle pressed the button, alarms started going off before the room started siphoning the Red Smoke.

When the Red Smoke was gone, the room started shaking a bit, which surprised Michelle and made her look around. Red Smoke started filling the left side and cracked the glass, which made Michelle look at it before backing away.

Soon after, the glass shattered before the Red Smoke was completely gone, which made Michelle sigh in relief. As the vault door on the other side opened, CatNap got on the upper floor and approached the glass. "ANGEL..." he said.

Michelle looked at CatNap through the glass. "I'm OK, buddy," she said before looking around. "But it looks like I can't find a way for you to come to this side."

CatNap looked at Michelle, concerned. "WHAT NOW...?" he asked.

Michelle thought of something and looked at CatNap. "You track down the others while staying out of the Doctor's sight," she said before pointing at the broken window. "I'll take a different path, and we'll rendezvous elsewhere and head to Safe Haven."

CatNap stared at Michelle before nodding. "VERY WELL... BE CAREFUL..." he said.

Michelle smiled and nodded. "Likewise," she said.

CatNap nodded before sprinting toward the vault door and leaving the prison block. Michelle looked at the broken window. "Time to get out of this place," she said before approaching it.
