...
The dragon, infuriated that its breath had been repelled by a magical barrier, banked sharply into the sky. It beat its massive wings, hovering heavily above the burning courtyard, looking down at the towering High Elf standing atop the mammoth. The beast opened its jaws again, but this time, it did not breathe fire. It roared a sequence of harsh, guttural, rhythmic syllables that echoed like thunderclaps. To the Imperial legionnaires and the surviving Stormcloaks, it sounded like the mindless, terrifying roar of a monster.
But to Aerion, the sound was entirely different.
The moment the dragon spoke, Aerion's System interface flashed in his mind.
[Passive Skill Activated: Dragon Master (MAX Level)]
[Draconic Language Translation Engaged.]
[Anatomical Translation Assessment Engaged.]
The harsh, guttural roars instantly translated in Aerion's mind, morphing into a deep, booming, arrogant voice that dripped with ancient malice.
"Dovah! Hear my voice! Blood spills upon the mountain! Meat rots in the snow! Come! Come and feast upon the weak mortals who dare to defy the ruler of this land!"
Aerion's eyes widened slightly behind the bronze mask.
The dragon was not just boasting. It was executing a draconic summons. It was calling for another dragon, a brood or a rival, to join the onslaught of slaughter below.
Aerion's tactical mind immediately went into overdrive, calculating the geopolitical and strategic implications with lightning speed.
He had the Eye of Magnus. He had his Destruction and Restoration skills. He had forty Daedric Atronachs inside the fort and eleven armored mammoths on the ground. He knew, with absolute certainty, that if a second dragon arrived, he could fight them both simultaneously and win. He could blast them out of the sky, protect his men, and slaughter the beasts.
But he could not afford to do it.
If he, a High Elf Praefect turned Captain, openly took on two dragons at the exact same time and effortlessly slaughtered them in front of a thousand Imperial legionnaires, the political fallout would be catastrophic.
One dragon was a heroic, legendary feat. Two dragons simultaneously elevated him to a level of mythological world ending power that could somewhat eclipse Aeloria, the actual Dragonborn. It would force the Imperial High Command in Cyrodiil to view him not as an asset, but as an uncontrollable, existential threat to the Emperor.
It would trigger an immediate, massive influx of elite Thalmor assassins sent by the Aldmeri Dominion to eradicate a High Elf who possessed godlike power but served the Empire.
He could not expose the true, bottomless depth of his power yet. The board was not fully set.
He had to kill this dragon immediately, before the second one arrived to answer the call.
Aerion dropped the massive Greater Ward, his hands instantly shifting from defensive magic to pure, concentrated offense.
The dragon drew in a massive, deep breath, its chest expanding as it prepared to roar the final syllable of its summoning call.
"Silence," Aerion commanded coldly.
He channeled a staggering load of Magicka into a dual-casted, overcharged barrage of Incinerate and Thunderbolt. He didn't aim for the beast's heavily armored chest, guided by his MAX level Dragon Master skill, he targeted the softer, unarmored membranes directly beneath the dragon's jaw and throat.
A blinding, rapid fire volley of red hot plasma and jagged lightning tore from Aerion's hands, striking the dragon with pinpoint, surgical precision just as it opened its mouth to shout.
The concussive force of the magic slammed into the dragon's throat, violently interrupting the shout. The plasma scorched the sensitive scales, while the lightning bypassed the armor entirely, electrocuting the vocal cords and shocking the beast's nervous system.
The dragon choked, swallowing its own roar. It let out a shrieking, gargling cry of absolute, agonized fury.
Its ancient, arrogant pride completely shattered. It forgot the summons. It forgot the feast. Its reptilian eyes locked entirely onto the High Elf who had dared to cause it pain.
"I WILL BURN YOUR FLESH TO ASH, MORTAL!" The dragon screamed in its native tongue, folding its wings and entering a terrifying, sheer dive directly toward Aerion and the alpha mammoth.
"Hold steady!" Aerion ordered the alpha through their bond.
As the dragon plummeted, it opened its jaws, unleashing a concentrated, narrow stream of superheated fire aimed directly at the mammoth's skull.
Aerion did not dodge. He didn't cast a ward. He met the beast's fury with opposing elemental wrath.
Aerion thrust his hands forward, unleashing a massive, continuous torrent of Icy Spear and Frostbite, powered by the Eye of Magnus to freezing temperatures.
The roaring river of fire collided with the torrential blast of glacial frost in the dead center of the airspace between them.
The thermal shock was explosive. The clash of absolute extremes created a massive, shrieking vortex of violently expanding steam and concussive energy. The deafening hiss of the elements warring for supremacy drowned out the sounds of the battlefield. The steam instantly blanketed the courtyard in a thick, blinding white fog.
The dragon, blinded by the sudden explosion of steam and carrying too much downward momentum from its furious dive, realized its fatal error a fraction of a second too late.
It attempted to pull up, snapping its massive wings to arrest its descent, but it flew too low. It skimmed the heavy, freezing fog mere feet above the mammoth herd.
Aerion didn't need to issue a verbal command. His Animal Affinity was perfectly attuned to the primal instincts of his beasts.
As the dragon's massive, scaled underbelly passed overhead, the alpha mammoth and the largest bull mammoth standing directly beside it reared up on their massive hind legs.
With blinding, terrifying speed, the two colossal mammals lashed out with their thick, prehensile trunks. The trunks, heavily muscled and as thick as tree trunks themselves, snapped like steel cables around the dragon's left hind leg and the base of its heavy, spiked tail.
The dragon shrieked in shock as its forward momentum was violently, abruptly halted.
The two mammoths did not let go. With a synchronized, earth shaking bellow, the beasts threw their massive weight forward, dropping back down onto their front feet and violently yanking their trunks downward.
The sheer, combined physical strength and weight of two fully grown, armored mammoths was staggering. It was far more than the dragon could resist in mid air.
The dragon was physically ripped from the sky.
It crashed down into the courtyard with a huge shattering impact. The heavy stone cobblestones buckled and shattered beneath its colossal mass. The impact created a massive shockwave of displaced snow and mud, completely crushing a pocket of two dozen terrified Stormcloak soldiers who had been desperately trying to flee the steam cloud.
The beast thrashed wildly, its wings beating against the stone, roaring in panic as it tried to dislodge the massive, suffocating grips of the mammoth trunks.
Aerion did not give it a chance to recover.
He raised his hands, pointing them directly at the dragon's exposed underbelly, right where the heavy, interlocking chest scales gave way to the softer, unarmored hide protecting its heart, the exact weak point highlighted by his Dragon Master skill.
He unleashed a rapid, devastating volley of three Ice Spikes, each overcharged to the density of solid steel.
The spikes drove deep into the dragon's underbelly, piercing the soft hide and burying themselves into the beast's internal organs. The dragon roared in absolute, paralyzing agony, its thrashing slowing as the magical frost began to instantly freeze its blood from the inside out.
Aerion dropped his hands. The magic was finished. He wanted an execution.
He reached over his shoulder and drew his massive, pitch black Ebony Greatsword. The heavy steel hissed as it cleared the leather scabbard.
Aerion stepped to the very edge of the alpha mammoth's domed skull. He bent his knees, channeling his massively upgraded stamina into his legs, and leaped.
He soared through the freezing air, his dark cloak billowing like the wings of a demon. He cleared the twenty foot gap between the towering mammoth and the grounded dragon, descending rapidly toward the beast's thrashing head.
The dragon, sensing the incoming threat, snapped its massive jaws upward, attempting to catch the High Elf in mid air.
Aerion twisted his body flawlessly, tucking his shoulder to narrowly dodge the snapping teeth. As gravity pulled him down, he landed heavily upon the side of the dragon's massive, horned skull. His spiked, enchanted boots dug deeply into the thick scales, anchoring him in place.
The dragon roared, attempting to violently shake its head to dislodge him.
Aerion raised the Ebony Greatsword high above his head, gripping the leather wrapped hilt with both gauntleted hands. He locked his golden eyes onto the soft, vulnerable gap directly behind the dragon's right eye socket.
With a primal, echoing grunt of exertion, Aerion brought the massive blade down.
He drove the Ebony Greatsword directly into the gap. The heavy, razor-sharp steel punched through the bone, burying itself to the hilt directly into the dragon's brain.
The massive beast went completely, terrifyingly rigid. Its jaws locked open in a silent, frozen scream. The glow instantly faded from its reptilian eyes, and its massive body collapsed heavily into the blood-soaked mud, dead.
Aerion stood atop the skull of the slain god, his chest heaving slightly, the hilt of his sword still clutched in his hands. He ripped the blade free with a violent jerk, dark, freezing blood spraying across the snow.
Because he was not the Dragonborn, the beast's body did not ignite in an ethereal, golden fire. It did not dissolve into a soul. It simply lay there, a colossal, bleeding monument to the High Elf's absolute supremacy.
For a long, heavy moment, the entire battlefield was completely, utterly silent. The Imperial legionnaires stared in awe at the silhouette of their Captain standing atop the dragon, while the remaining Stormcloaks stared in absolute, mind-shattering despair.
Then, a desperate, feral scream broke the silence.
A squad of a dozen Stormcloak berserkers, their minds completely broken by the horrors they had witnessed, charged blindly toward the dragon's corpse, swinging their battleaxes in a suicidal frenzy, determined to kill the Elf even if it cost them their lives.
Aerion didn't even look at them. He simply raised his blade.
The alpha mammoth stepped forward, letting out a protective, earth shaking roar. Its massive trunk swept the courtyard, violently batting three of the charging berserkers into the air like ragdolls. Lydia, Jenassa, and Eisa pushed past the mammoth herd, charging into the gap to protect their Thane.
"Hold the line!" Lydia roared, bringing her shield up to bash a berserker into the mud, while Eisa cleanly severed another man's arm with the Pale Blade.
Aerion smoothly leaped down from the dragon's skull, landing heavily in the snow. He joined the brutal, close quarters melee, his Ebony Greatsword flashing as he effortlessly parried and cleaved through the desperate, exhausted rebels.
The fighting raged for another ten minutes, a bloody, grinding mop up of the few Stormcloaks who had the courage left to hold their ground outside the fortress walls. But the heart of the rebellion had been completely ripped out.
Aerion parried a final, weak thrust from a bleeding Stormcloak spearman, sidestepped, and drove the pommel of his greatsword into the man's temple, dropping him unconscious to the snow.
He took a step back, breathing in the cold air, and looked up at the sky.
The blizzard had completely cleared, leaving a hard, brilliant blue expanse. The sun had reached tight above them. It was directly above the battlefield, casting short, harsh shadows across the carnage. It was noon.
They had been fighting, marching, and slaughtering since the early morning hours.
Aerion looked back at the Imperial phalanx. The one thousand legionnaires were still holding their flawless formation, their shields locked tight, but he could see the heavy, exhausted slump in their shoulders. Their stamina was finite. The adrenaline of the initial breach and the dragon fight was rapidly wearing off, leaving behind the heavy, freezing reality of the mountain air.
He looked toward the shattered remains of Fort Kastav. The surviving Stormcloaks, perhaps there's still more than five thousand terrified men, had retreated entirely into the deep, dark interior of the stronghold. They had barricaded the heavy iron doors and were undoubtedly setting traps in the narrow, claustrophobic corridors.
If Aerion ordered his exhausted infantry to push into that dark meat grinder now, they would take heavy, entirely unnecessary casualties. The tactical advantage of momentum had peaked.
The siege was not meant to be won in a single morning. It was meant to break them psychologically.
"SOUND THE RETREAT!" Aerion commanded, his voice magically amplified to carry across the bloody courtyard.
Praefect Valerius blinked, surprised by the sudden order when victory seemed so close, but he did not hesitate. He signaled the horn blowers.
A long, clear, descending blast echoed over the plateau.
"FALL BACK!" Valerius roared. "MAINTAIN FORMATION! SLOW MARCH REVERSE!"
The Imperial phalanx executed the order with perfect, mechanical discipline. They did not break their shield wall. They took a synchronized, heavy step backward, moving away from the shattered fortress in a slow, impenetrable block of crimson and steel.
Aerion whistled sharply, commanding the mammoth herd to turn. The massive beasts lumbered away from the dragon corpse, forming a protective rearguard between the retreating legionnaires and the silent, terrified fortress.
The Stormcloaks did not pursue. They did not sally out to harass the retreating Imperials. They stayed huddled in the dark, staring out at the frozen mud, the forty dissipating piles of Daedric ash, and the massive, bleeding corpse of a dragon resting in their courtyard.
Aerion walked beside the alpha mammoth, his golden eyes fixed on the distant, glowing blue walls of the ice fortress he had constructed the night before.
He had achieved absolute perfection today. He had shattered their walls, slaughtered more of the Stormcloaks, and executed a dragon in front of their eyes. He had inflicted a level of psychological trauma upon the Stormcloak garrison that no physical barricade could ever heal.
Tonight, the rebels would sit in the freezing dark, listening to the wind, knowing that the god of destruction was sleeping just outside their shattered walls. They would go mad with despair.
And tomorrow morning, when Aerion finally gave the order to take the interior, the desperate, broken remnants of the Stormcloak army would shatter like glass.
The heavy, synchronized tread of one thousand Imperial boots echoed off the sheer, glowing walls of the glacial fortress Aerion had ripped from the frozen earth the night before. As the regiment marched back through the massive southern gap in the permafrost, the sheer exhaustion of the day's butchery finally began to settle over the men. Their crimson cloaks were stiff with frozen blood, their heavy rectangular shields scarred by battleaxes and jagged bone arrows, but they walked with the unshakeable discipline of a victorious army.
Aerion commanded the armored mammoths to take up their resting positions near the center of the encampment, out of the immediate paths of the infantry. He slid down from the alpha's massive skull, the heavy plates of his Nordic Carved Armor clanking against the frozen dirt, and pulled the bronze mask of Krosis from his face.
Praefects Valerius and Quintus were waiting for him near the roaring watchfires of the command pavilion. Their faces were grim, soot stained, and completely devoid of the euphoric relief they had carried the day prior.
Aerion approached them, his golden eyes immediately catching the shift in their demeanor. "Give me today's report."
Valerius snapped off a crisp salute, clutching a parchment ledger that fluttered in the freezing wind. "Today's engagement was much more brutal, Captain. When the Stormcloaks pushed their heavy reserves out of the interior barracks, the melee became a pure grinder. We held the line, but they fought with the desperation of cornered men."
Valerius paused, swallowing hard. "We lost thirty men in the final push before the retreat was sounded. Another two dozen sustained heavy injuries, crushed ribs, severed digits, and deep lacerations, and roughly fifty more took light injuries from shrapnel and stray arrows."
Aerion absorbed the numbers in absolute silence. Thirty dead out of a thousand against a fortified garrison was a staggering, almost impossible statistical triumph for an attacking force, but the loss of life was still a heavy anchor. He let out a slow, controlled sigh, the condensation pluming in the freezing air, and offered a solemn nod.
"Have the bodies of the fallen been recovered and brought back behind our walls?" Aerion asked, his voice low and respectful.
Quintus nodded deeply. "Yes, Captain. The rear guard secured them during the tactical withdrawal. They are wrapped in linen and resting in the western quadrant of the camp."
"Good," Aerion said, his tone shifting back to the pragmatic necessities of command. "I want the quartermasters to double the hot rations for the men tonight. Tap the reserve casks of ale. They bled for this ground, and they need to stay warm. We will not hold the funeral rites tonight, a burial ceremony in the dark will only tank the regiment's morale before the final push. We will honor the dead tomorrow, after Fort Kastav has been fully conquered."
The two Praefects saluted in unison. "Yes, Captain. We will relay the orders to the Tribunes."
As Valerius and Quintus hurried off to manage the logistics of the camp, Aerion turned his attention to his personal retainers and the four battlemages who had gathered behind him.
"J'zargo, Onmund, Brelyna, Eirik," Aerion called out, shedding his heavy cloak. "Come with me. The field medics are overwhelmed, and we have men bleeding in the tents."
For the next two hours, Aerion and his apprentices moved tirelessly through the dim, blood scented interiors of the triage tents. Aerion handled the most catastrophic injuries himself, channeling the infinite, golden reservoir of his maximized Restoration magic to perfectly knit shattered bones and fuse torn arteries.
He guided the younger mages through the lighter injuries, instructing them on how to weave Healing Hands deeply into the muscle fibers to prevent infection and scarring. The agonizing groans of the wounded were slowly replaced by profound, exhausted sighs of relief as the magic washed away their pain.
When the final legionnaire was stabilized and resting peacefully, Aerion stepped out of the triage tents, wiping a streak of dried blood from his gauntlet. The camp was quiet now, the men eating their extra rations in hushed, exhausted clusters around the fires.
Aerion walked away from the center of the encampment, climbing the sloping, perfectly smooth stairs of solid ice he had sculpted the night before. He reached the top of the thirty foot permafrost rampart and stood near the edge, looking north across the moonlit, snow covered plateau.
In the distance, the smoking, shattered ruins of Fort Kastav loomed like a rotting tooth against the mountain peaks. Even from a mile away, Aerion's enhanced vision could spot the frantic, desperate movements of the surviving Stormcloaks. They were attempting to drag the frozen bodies of their comrades out of the courtyard by torchlight, desperately piling rubble into the breached curtain wall in a futile attempt to seal the fortress before dawn.
The heavy crunch of boots on the ice drew Aerion's attention. Praefect Valerius stepped up beside him on the rampart, his breath frosting in the air.
"Captain," Valerius greeted him softly, looking out over the frozen wasteland. "A courier rider just arrived from the south. He passed the main roads and rode hard through the mountain passes."
Aerion did not look away from the fortress. "News from General Tullius?"
"Yes, sir," Valerius confirmed, a fierce, satisfied grin breaking across his tired face. "The General and Legate Rikke have moved. While we were anchoring the Stormcloak reserves here and turning Kastav into a slaughterhouse, the main Imperial army force marched straight up the Pale. They hit Fort Dunstad with thirty thousand men."
Valerius let out a sharp laugh. "The Stormcloaks in the Pale were completely taken by surprise. They had diverted their scouting parties and their attention entirely toward our disturbance here. The courier reports that Dunstad is already buckling under the siege. The General sends his regards, and he explicitly hopes that you can finish Fort Kastav with maximum speed so that Whiterun is not left exposed for too long."
Aerion nodded slowly, processing the grand strategic board. The two northern holds were bleeding out simultaneously. Ulfric Stormcloak was trapped in a geographic vice.
"There is one other piece of news from the courier," Valerius added, his tone shifting to mild curiosity. "General Tullius requested that the Dragonborn, Lady Aeloria, and her housecarl Valdemar accompany his command staff on the march to Dunstad. He wanted her Thu'um on the front lines in the event that a dragon was drawn to the siege."
Aerion's golden eyes flickered slightly, but he offered a calm, measured chuckle. "As long as Aeloria chose to accompany the main army of her own volition, and was not politically coerced by the General, it is acceptable. She is a weapon of mass destruction in her own right, General Tullius would be a fool not to utilize her."
Aerion turned his head, leaning slightly against the jagged ice parapet, and looked at his second in command.
"Tell me, Valerius," Aerion mused, an amused, charismatic lilt entering his voice. "Do you feel that since the defense of Whiterun, the General and the Legate have been communicating vastly more directly with me? The dispatches, the couriers, the personal visits to our formations..."
Valerius let out a genuine, hearty chuckle, shaking his head. "By the Divines, Captain, who wouldn't? You broke a siege single handedly and then blew a hole in a mountain fortress. You are, without question, one of the fastest rising officers in the history of the Imperial Legion. With the momentum you possess, I am entirely certain you will be promoted to Legate the moment this civil war ends. Perhaps even a General, stationed permanently in Skyrim."
Aerion's smile faded into a cool, calculating smirk. He shook his head slowly, his golden eyes locking onto the young Praefect with terrifying clarity.
"I wouldn't want that, Valerius," Aerion said, his voice dropping into a low, serious register. "And even if I did, it will never happen. I am a High Elf. Legate is the unbreakable glass ceiling of my Imperial career."
Valerius frowned, deeply confused. "Captain, the Empire rewards merit. General Tullius is a pragmatist. He doesn't care about your race, he cares about your results."
"General Tullius is a pragmatist, yes," Aerion agreed smoothly. "But the Emperor in Cyrodiil is a politician, and the Elder Council is terrified of the White-Gold Concordat. The Aldmeri Dominion controls the narrative. If the Empire elevates a High Elf who possesses the power to level cities and summon Daedric armies to the rank of General, the Thalmor will immediately classify me as a rogue Dominion asset, or worse, an Imperial weapon designed to break the treaty. They cannot risk the political fallout. They cannot risk the whispers that I am a Thalmor spy embedded in their high command."
Aerion turned his gaze back to the burning fortress in the distance. "They will give me medals, they will give me wealth, and they will give me a thousand men to bleed for them. But they will never give me the province. I must build my own foundations." Valerius stood in stunned silence on the ice wall. The brutal, inescapable geopolitical reality of Aerion's words completely shattered his idealistic view of the Legion's meritocracy. He opened his mouth to reply, to offer some form of reassurance, but he didn't know how to answer the stark truth.
