Chapter 345: This Support is Harder than Diamonds
Liu Naishun had never imagined his ability to attract attention would be this powerful.
The press conference was held at the headquarters of the Deyi Mining Group, a relatively unknown company usually overlooked by the media. Today, however, hundreds of media outlets practically fought over each other just to secure an entrance pass.
Major international media like the Gua Post, New York Times, and the Global Star immediately expressed intense interest upon receiving invitations, arriving at the venue early.
The modest setting and basic seating did nothing to diminish the enthusiasm of the attendees.
Malu River Coal Mine, Li Tang himself, and Mali River Iron Ore Mine had all become focal points of recent media coverage.
Today's press conference focused squarely on the Malu River Coal Mine project.
Journalists knew Li Tang's tendency to keep a low profile and assumed he was unlikely to appear. Still, many secretly hoped: what if he actually showed up?
"Do you think he'll appear?" Joseph had personally flown from Toronto to Vancouver, demonstrating just how significant Li Tang's recent arrest had become across Gua.
Capturing the public's attention meant securing the key to wealth.
Elvin, full of anticipation but still rational, replied, "I've met Li Tang several times. He's an extraordinary young man with calm eyes. Many rumors exaggerate his abilities, some even claiming his eyes are golden, as though he were a mythical figure. But actually, when you meet him, you'll see he's a very ordinary young man—not at all unusual. Yet, the things he accomplishes always astonish everyone."
"So?" Joseph felt Elvin was rambling.
"He won't appear at an event like this. Having just been released on bail, rationally, he should remain silent. And besides, public spectacle just isn't his style," Elvin said confidently, but he still glanced around, hopeful. "Maybe he's secretly watching the press conference through a monitor somewhere."
"If he doesn't show up, the excitement of the news will be cut in half," Joseph sighed, disappointed.
"Let's wait and see; we might still get a surprise," Elvin insisted optimistically. His notebook, recorder, and camera were already set up. "Malu River Coal Mine Company—Li Tang holds 50% of its shares. He wouldn't invest in such a project for no reason. This is his first foray into coal exploration."
"He already has the operating rights for Talego Coal Mine, the largest coal mine in the world. Everyone in the coal business envies him," Joseph noted. "He managed to persuade Mongolia's top officials to give him coal rights across 400 square kilometers, practically for free, back when coal prices were low."
"That's exactly why his vision is always so far ahead."
"Any of his mining rights alone could make him among the world's richest. Yet, he continues to invest in exploration projects, which does raise some suspicion."
"Many media outlets are now labeling Malu River Coal Mine Company as a spy organization, claiming it's gathering topographical data and military coordinates. It's absurd!" Elvin scoffed. "I've investigated thoroughly—they've genuinely invested a significant amount of money into exploration."
"Still, accusations of espionage always grab public attention," Joseph admitted, neither endorsing nor condemning the approach.
Elvin despised sensationalism and refused to comment further. "It's starting!"
Liu Naishun neatly combed his hair and polished his glasses meticulously. Facing journalists and flashing cameras, he briefly felt an unusual pang of anxiety.
"Today's press conference is in direct response to irresponsible media reports falsely labeling Malu River Coal Mine Company as spies!"
Once he began speaking, his nervousness faded, replaced by firmness.
"This year, Malu River Coal Mine Company invested 30 million USD, drilling approximately 20,000 meters within our designated coal exploration area," he spoke slowly, clearly articulating every word. "Like a football match, we've completed the first half successfully. Within our project area, we've confirmed coal reserves totaling 3 billion tonnes, half of which is prime coking coal!"
The venue instantly erupted in astonishment.
Before arriving, reporters had done their homework. They knew Liu Naishun's modestly successful Gaisen Coal Mine had discovered 300 million tonnes of coal reserves the previous year, already considered impressive for a small Chinese-led enterprise.
Yet now, in comparison, Malu River Coal Mine's discovery was staggering.
Three billion tonnes?
What did that even mean?
This was unprecedented in Gua's history!
In a nation known worldwide for its advanced exploration industry, generations of seasoned explorers had scoured its lands without ever uncovering a coal deposit this enormous.
Now, a small team of Chinese investors had achieved it after just one or two years, some only working a few months!
It was like a slap in the face to every self-proclaimed expert geologist in Gua.
Yet, wasn't this discovery also something worth celebrating—another huge natural resource, more jobs, more wealth flowing into Gua's economy?
Before the audience's excitement had quieted down, Liu raised his voice, gripping the microphone tighter, continuing:
"In the second half of the exploration project, we anticipate total coal reserves reaching between 5 and 7 billion tonnes. With improvements in deep exploration technology, making deeper resources economically viable, we'll eventually drill down to depths of 1,500 meters, possibly even 2,000 meters. At that point, our exploration target will be 10 billion tonnes!"
The audience erupted again.
Cameras flashed relentlessly, flooding the room with blinding brightness.
Although nearly blinded, Liu held the microphone firmly, his thoughts clear. "We firmly believe, as our exploration continues, Malu River Coal Mine will surpass Talego Coal Mine, becoming the largest coal deposit globally! In terms of coking coal alone, its reserves will undoubtedly rank first worldwide!"
The cameras kept flashing, turning the scene surreal.
Liu picked up a document, announcing, "Next, I'll share detailed drilling data collected so far…"
…
After attending the press conference, Elvin, through Joseph's introduction, met with the Minister of Mines and Minerals of Columbia Province.
"Yes, the Malu River Coal Mine Project is a significant breakthrough—it's not only the largest coal mine in Columbia Province or even in Gua, but also globally," the minister spoke passionately. "This project has deeply touched me. This job has brought unprecedented challenges and joys. To attract Li Tang and foreign investment into Columbia's exploration sector, we've done immense work. As you can see, we succeeded."
Clearly, he intended to claim some credit publicly—after all, appearing in the media required presenting oneself favorably.
A new coal discovery measuring billions of tonnes was historic. If the Financial Post reported the minister had attracted this investment, his achievement would be legendary, a once-in-a-lifetime accomplishment.
"Minister, are you aware that Li Tang is currently under investigation for allegedly endangering national security?" Elvin immediately asked, placing a voice recorder between them.
The minister glanced at the device cautiously, then hopefully: "Did you record everything I just said?"
"Yes, I've been recording continuously," Elvin confirmed politely. "I hope I haven't offended you, Minister."
"No, not at all!" the minister beamed. "My comments will appear in your paper?"
"Yes, by tonight or latest tomorrow morning, your statements will be published nationally and globally," Elvin assured. "Your views will influence global public opinion."
"Excellent," the minister nodded happily, a man who clearly enjoyed recognition. "Make sure you publish everything exactly as I said—don't omit anything."
"Certainly," Elvin smiled, eyes narrowing slightly. "Minister, you still haven't answered my earlier question."
"You mean about Li Tang's accusations?"
The minister hesitated slightly.
Having navigated politics for decades, he recognized risky situations instantly. Li Tang's arrest had ignited public outrage nationwide. Speaking up could be dangerous; silence seemed safest.
Yet, considering he'd just publicly associated himself with Malu River Coal Mine's success, his interests were undeniably intertwined with Li Tang's.
Recognizing this alignment, he decided quickly: "The Malu River Coal Mine project is real—I can personally vouch for this! Those accusations against Li Tang—claiming he has sinister motives—are complete fabrications. Li Tang himself wasn't involved in daily operations, but his investment and leadership were essential. His arrest represents an abuse of our judicial system by certain parties!"
Not only did he boldly support Li Tang, but he openly criticized the justice system for misconduct. This kind of direct public support from a high-ranking official was unprecedented—almost scandalously courageous!
Elvin felt energized instantly; this was precisely what he wanted to hear. Knowing Li Tang's integrity personally, he couldn't believe the espionage allegations. However, Elvin's personal beliefs alone wouldn't sway public opinion. Voices like the minister's were needed to influence discourse meaningfully.
"Thank you very much, Minister!" Elvin expressed genuine gratitude.
He deeply admired Li Tang, feeling great distress at the recent smear campaign.
As soon as the Financial Post published the interview, it triggered enormous waves—not only because of the 3-billion-tonne coal discovery, which was undeniably sensational news.
No one could have expected that after days of fierce criticism—when Malu River Coal Mine Company had almost been definitively labeled a spy organization, and everyone involved had practically been condemned to hell—the situation would suddenly take an astonishing turn. Malu River Coal Mine had discovered an enormous deposit of coal!
The discovery had already been confirmed by Columbia Province's Ministry of Mines and Minerals and the Environmental Department, making it ironclad and indisputable.
Suddenly, all those who had harshly condemned Malu River Coal Mine Company felt their faces burning with embarrassment. Especially those public figures who had openly made sharp accusations—they now found themselves unable to face the public and collectively fell silent.
"Finally, those loud-mouthed jerks have shut up!"
Flanders exhaled a thick ring of smoke, feeling indescribably relieved. "I always said someone like Li Tang wouldn't stoop to shady dealings. With billions of dollars to his name, he could have women, yachts, planes—everything he desires at the snap of his fingers. Only a fool would risk everything by stealing some nonsense coordinates!"
"Sir, Mr. Wazi has repeatedly indicated that he's assessing the serious nature of Li Tang's case, and if necessary, he may dissolve Cold Iron Company and revoke the exploration rights to Mali River Iron Mine!"
"Rubbish! Absolute nonsense!" Flanders snapped angrily, though he obviously wouldn't say this directly to Wazi's face. "Arrange an appointment with Mr. Wazi immediately. Clearly, public opinion is already shifting. And remind him that with Li Tang involved, the Mali River Iron Mine project is certain to succeed—even more spectacularly than Malu River Coal Mine!"
"Yes, sir. I'll arrange it immediately."
"And inform Wazi that Cold Iron Company will undoubtedly become the next Lianying Mining! Anyone who obstructs Cold Iron Company will become a historical villain!"
Even Flanders himself found this kind of optimism unbelievable. Lianying Mining had become the world's fourth-largest iron ore company, valued at 20 billion Australian dollars, achieving what could only be described as a miracle.
Such opportunities were rare.
But now, witnessing another miracle created by Li Tang, Malu River Coal Mine had reaffirmed his greatness.
Flanders had witnessed it firsthand, although sadly he had missed the chance to participate in Malu River Coal Mine directly.
However, he now had a great opportunity before him: working alongside Li Tang, experiencing his genius up close. Even though he held only 20% of Cold Iron Company's shares, this could be a golden opportunity, a bridge to future friendship and partnership.
Flanders had already started imagining future collaborations with Li Tang in Africa and across the globe.
…
During the previous television interview, Gentry, the CEO of Foer Company, had lost decisively in his debate against Layton, the leader of the New Democratic Party.
Many people supported Layton's stance, opposing Chinese enterprises, as if siding with justice against evil and darkness. They had rallied together, shouting slogans and celebrating as if claiming victory over Li Tang and China itself. Now that Li Tang had been accused of threatening national security and faced imprisonment, it felt like a triumphant moment for "justice."
At the television network's invitation, Layton agreed to return for another interview. He accepted partly because the compensation was generous, and partly because the other invited guest was Mark, CEO of Barrick Gold.
Barrick Gold was a flagship company for Canada—a national pride. Competing neck-and-neck with Newmont Goldcorp, Barrick Gold regularly alternated as the world's largest gold producer. It was a company with tremendous influence, capable of reaching into every corner of Canadian society.
Some even cynically speculated that behind Canada's cabinets, parliamentary elections, and even prime ministerial selections, one could always vaguely detect the influence of Barrick Gold, Alcan Group, and other corporate giants.
More blunt critics even openly accused these corporations of controlling Canadian politics. Elections, they said, were determined by wealth and influence. Who wouldn't want support from powerful corporations like Barrick Gold or Alcan Group? With such backers, a politician's path would be smooth, allowing them to reach for the stars.
Layton's expression upon seeing Mark was completely different from when he had met Gentry. He eagerly grasped Mark's hand with both of his own, his eyes narrowing into joyful slits. "Mark! I never expected you would personally participate in a program like this."
"I've seen you frequently on TV," Mark replied with a smile. He certainly knew Layton from television appearances—sometimes sharp, sometimes comical, sometimes utterly unpredictable—exactly the personality suited for TV.
"Gold prices are soaring, and the market values of gold companies have been climbing steadily. I'm certain Barrick Gold's financial report this year will look extremely good! Shareholders of Barrick must have dollar signs dancing in their eyes," the host commented cheerfully. Turning toward Mark, he asked, "Mr. CEO, would you like to share your joy of making money with your shareholders today, or perhaps discuss the future trends of gold?"
When it came to the gold market, Mark was unquestionably authoritative. Layton was good at making empty promises, but in front of Mark's expertise, he was like a child.
"I believe gold prices will continue rising. I've encouraged my wife to buy a gold bracelet and two gold necklaces," Layton interjected humorously, opening his mouth wide to reveal a blackened tooth. "I'm thinking of replacing this tooth with gold too—I firmly believe gold is the best investment!"
His joke drew loud laughter from hundreds of people in the audience.
Layton proudly continued showing off his blackened tooth, while Mark shook his head slightly. "I've discussed gold extensively in many places, and today I'd rather talk about something else—a matter of significant public interest, which I've been following closely."
"What matter is that?" the host asked, though he already suspected the answer.
"I know Li Tang, and I've personally met him," Mark stated bluntly.
The audience immediately stirred.
"I've heard Li Tang is an exceptional geologist—I can't personally verify that. But I have personally witnessed something else: he is an extraordinary investor, sharp-eyed, precise, and visionary!" Mark continued speaking openly and confidently. "You've undoubtedly heard about Malu River Coal Mine's discovery of three billion tonnes of coal—I've confirmed this news myself. But there's another story many Canadians might not know, though it's widely known in Australia."
"You're referring to Li Tang's investment in a gold project in Australia, aren't you?" the host asked.
"Indeed, someone here is informed," Mark nodded. "Earlier this year, Li Tang invested in a gold exploration project called Tropicana Gold Mine, where they discovered 200 tonnes of high-grade, shallow-buried gold ore—a once-in-a-lifetime discovery!"
"What does this prove?" asked the host cautiously.
"That Li Tang couldn't possibly have been stealing any so-called military secrets! He simply conducted coal exploration in our country and discovered a huge coal deposit—that's all!" Mark looked directly into the camera. "Li Tang is Chinese, and just because of that, should he be considered guilty? Such thinking lacks the decency and dignity of a major nation!"
Faced with Mark's forceful defense, no one dared to speak against him. Even the host was so nervous that sweat formed on the microphone he tightly held.
Mark, without waiting for the host's response, continued speaking. "China's economy is rising rapidly, and Chinese enterprises are entering the global stage. Much international investment capital comes from China. If we continue to view them with hostility, we risk losing billions of dollars in investment each year. These investments could create hundreds of thousands—perhaps millions—of jobs!"
"Stop foolishly seeing everything as black or white! Open your eyes and accept reality: China is gradually changing the world! If we fail to build good relations and attract their investment, we will lose the greatest opportunity for growth in our lifetime!"
These words were incredibly sharp—not only directly contradicting Layton's beliefs but also challenging the opinions of many ordinary Canadians. Mark had clearly and openly thrown his support behind Li Tang.
What was happening in the world?
First, Columbia Province's Minister of Mines and Minerals had openly supported Li Tang. Now, Mark, CEO of Barrick Gold—rarely seen on TV—had appeared solely to defend Li Tang!
This level of support was tougher than diamonds!
The host, Layton, the audience in the studio, and everyone watching at home were stunned into silence. They had no way of countering Barrick Gold's CEO. Yet these statements sharply conflicted with widespread public sentiment, leaving people stunned, unsettled, and questioning themselves.
…
"Why would Barrick Gold publicly defend you?" Alice stared at the TV screen in disbelief.
They'd gathered in Li Tang's room, having received advance notice of the broadcast. Listening to Mark's open support, they were genuinely puzzled.
"Maybe because I'm handsome?" Li Tang joked.
Alice glanced skeptically at Li Tang's face—certainly a charming man, but hardly enough to mesmerize Mark.
"We rejected Barrick Gold's offer to purchase shares in Lambourne Resources. Mark shouldn't be acting so friendly."
Alice's phone suddenly rang.
"Ms. Alice?" asked a familiar voice on the line.
"Mark?" Alice immediately recognized the voice.
"I know you're in Canada, likely at Li Tang's side. Could we meet soon to discuss the Tropicana Gold Mine project?"
Alice glanced at Li Tang, then said, "Li Tang's movements are restricted right now."
"I can fly to Vancouver. It's no trouble," Mark offered generously.
"Currently, we're not focused on business; we're preoccupied resolving certain difficulties."
"Li Tang's situation will be resolved soon. Don't worry," Mark assured confidently.
"I'm truly grateful for your candid support, Mark," Alice responded.
"I'm doing what I want—and what I can," Mark said straightforwardly. "I can even help Li Tang resolve his legal troubles. As you know, we have friends in the judiciary."
Alice fully believed Mark's words. Resolving Li Tang's legal issues was indeed their top priority. Yet she understood the cost: shares in Lambourne Resources.
"Agreed," she said decisively, without asking Li Tang.
After hanging up, seeing Li Tang's questioning look, she raised her chin defiantly, exposing her snow-white neck. "For your freedom, any price is worth paying!"
