I shifted uncomfortably in my seat as Lady Rowena continued discussing Dorian Ashworth's impending visit to Lockwood with Dowager Duchess Annelise. The mere mention of the woman's name sent a ripple of unease through me. Though Alaric had assured me multiple times that his grandmother posed no threat to our marriage, her sudden interest in the Ashworth family felt calculated.
"I find it curious," I said, interrupting Lady Rowena's speculation, "that Annelise would take such an interest in Dorian specifically."
Lady Rowena's lips curved into a knowing smile. "The Dowager Duchess rarely does anything without purpose, my dear. If she's courting Dorian's attention, there's a reason."
Damian cleared his throat. "I assure you, my brother is quite capable of handling himself in any situation."
"Is he?" Lady Rowena arched an eyebrow. "Your brother lacks your... political finesse, Lord Ashworth. I fear he may be easily manipulated by someone of Annelise's experience."
