"There really is a Gym!!" Around noon, after battling Trainers along the way, the group saw a strange building. In front of it stood a tall wooden wall, and before them was a large wooden gate. Above the gate, an electronic scoreboard displayed the number "91 consecutive wins," which was quite conspicuous.
"Not an official League Gym, currently 91 consecutive wins! It looks quite impressive!" Brock said, looking at the sign. If he didn't truly have strength, he wouldn't dare to write that,
right? And the Gym was quite well-built. Inside, they could see a large tent erected, looking like the kind used by a circus. The gate was currently closed.
Ash also looked up. 91 consecutive wins? He remembered it being 98 consecutive wins. It seemed that even though he had to spend time training every day, his journey was much faster than in the original anime.
"Ash, this person must be very strong. Are we still going in?" Misty looked at the number with some concern. Although Ash had won over thirty battles, the opponent was a master approaching 100 consecutive wins.
Clack!!!
Before Ash could speak, he suddenly heard a sound. The wooden gate in front of them suddenly opened, and a figure emerged from inside. He looked about Brock's age. The man wore a black shirt,
red shorts, and red athletic shoes, with a wild green spiky haircut. He was carrying a backpack, looking as if he was about to go out. He paused slightly when he saw the three standing outside the door.
"Who are you?"
Misty and Brock's expressions subtly changed. They felt that this person gave off a different vibe from the Trainers they had encountered on the road earlier. "We are passing Trainers. We heard there's a private Gym here established by a Beastmaster named Shō!" Ash replied upon hearing him.
"You must have heard about it from local Trainers, right? I'm Shō. Do you want to challenge me?" The man in front of them asked Ash and his two companions with a smile.
"That's right, but you seem to be heading out!"
"It's fine. Anyway, a battle ends quickly. I also want to achieve my goal of 100 consecutive wins as soon as possible. Come in!" Hearing Ash's words, Shō replied confidently. For him, all Trainers were just fodder for him to achieve 100 consecutive wins.
Shō turned and walked back inside. Seeing this, Misty frowned slightly. "This guy's so arrogant!" Seeing him look down on Ash made Misty a bit uncomfortable.
"He's certainly confident, but he does have reason to be!" Brock narrowed his eyes and said. The opponent's winning streak was indeed a reason for confidence.
As an official League Gym Leader, he himself had never achieved 100 consecutive wins, and while roadside Trainers and those who dared to challenge Gyms weren't on the same level, there were many hidden masters among ordinary people.
"Let's go!" Ash didn't mind, then led the way inside. After walking in, they found a different world inside. Besides a huge tent, there was also a large space. In front of the tent was a huge protruding rock,
which had been flattened and made into a battle arena. It was clear that he had put thought into this private Gym. Shō walked up first, then put down his backpack, and then pulled out a long whip from his backpack.
"Alright, which one of you will be the fodder for my 92nd consecutive win?" Shō confidently looked down at the three and asked.
"Fodder? This guy's too rude!" Misty was a bit angry hearing that.
"Don't mind him!" Ash waved his hand slightly upon hearing, took off his backpack, and handed it to Misty. Then he walked forward, stepping onto the wooden stairs and onto the field, standing opposite Shō.
"What are the rules?" Ash asked, standing opposite Shō.
"I'm in a hurry, so we'll have a one-on-one battle to decide the winner. Whichever Pokémon falls first, the battle ends. How about it?" Shō still maintained his confident posture.
"No problem!"
"Then I'm going in! Go, Sandshrew!" Shō swung the long whip in his hand, then took out a Poké Ball and threw it. The Poké Ball made a loud noise, and light shot out. A Pokémon landed on the ground.
Its entire body was covered in brick-like, earthy-yellow scales, looking incredibly hard. Its belly, without scales, appeared lighter in color. Its four limbs looked very strong, and its claws looked very hard. Its face looked a bit like a badger, but its body looked like a pangolin.
"It's Sandshrew. Electric-type moves won't work on him!" Brock frowned slightly upon hearing. Ash's only Pokémon with a type advantage was Gyarados. After Gyarados evolved, it was no longer purely a Water-type.
It didn't need to rely on water too much, but its size was still a disadvantage in this kind of arena. Sandshrew's defense was very strong.
Ash basically had no other Pokémon that could deal effective damage to it. Iron Tail was only effective against Rock-type Pokémon. For a pure Ground-type Sandshrew, Iron Tail wouldn't be very effective, so Pikachu would also be at a disadvantage.
"Go, Axew!!" Ash didn't plan to send out Gyarados. He knew that Shō's Sandshrew wasn't very afraid of water, so he never intended to use Gyarados from the start. And Ash, who had traveled through,
knew very well that he wouldn't just consider type advantages. Even if the type was disadvantageous, there was still a chance to win. But Ash didn't send out Pikachu; instead, he sent out Axew.
Axew!!!!
Axew emerged, letting out excited cries. Shō looked at Axew in front of him with some surprise. "It's a Pokémon I haven't seen before! It seems you're not an ordinary Trainer. Now I can be a little more serious." Shō looked at the Axew Ash sent out.
He hadn't seen this Pokémon before. But rare Pokémon were generally hard to encounter and hard to catch. Trainers who could encounter and catch rare Pokémon were usually extraordinary, yet he remained confident.
"Then you'd better be careful, or your winning streak will end today." Ash said with a confident smile. What Ash was thinking in his mind was,
"No, it will end today." He was confident, and Ash was equally confident. It was just that Shō's confidence was outwardly expressed, while Ash's confidence was expressed internally.
