Chapter 13 - Journeys Between Silence and Stars

Rishi's phone buzzed intermittently. He tapped on it and quickly opened the ticket booking app. A few swipes, a couple of confirmations, and a small grin spread across his face.

"What are you smiling at?" Gayathri asked, noticing him.

Rishi glanced at her, eyes playful. "We won't take the train all the way to Delhi."

She tilted her head, confused. "What do you mean?"

He showed her the screen. "I booked our flight tickets. We'll leave Chennai this afternoon instead of a long train journey. We'll reach Delhi by tonight."

Gayathri's eyes widened. "Wait… what? You booked a flight? Just like that?"

"Yes," Rishi said calmly, a small smirk playing on his lips. "It's easier, faster, and less exhausting. We still get to enjoy the journey—just… differently."

She stared at him, speechless for a few seconds. Then laughed softly, half in surprise, half in admiration. "I can't believe this. You didn't even tell me? This is… bold."

Rishi shrugged. "Sometimes the simplest solution isn't the obvious one. And I thought it would save time—and energy—before your interview."

She shook her head, smiling in disbelief. "Well… thank you, I guess. I was mentally preparing for hours on a train. Now… we fly."

By mid-morning, the bus was in motion, slowly winding through Sriperumbudur toward Chennai. The roads were busier now, as shops opened and the city began to stir. They watched the familiar streets pass by, fields giving way to small towns and finally to the urban bustle of Chennai city.

"Are you nervous about Delhi?" Rishi asked casually.

Gayathri nodded. "A little. But I feel ready. This whole journey, all of it, has been… grounding. Somehow, even coming back here, handling the house and documents—it's made me focus."

Rishi smiled silently, glancing out the window.

By early afternoon, they reached Chennai airport. The glass façade gleamed under the sun, passengers rushing through with trolleys and boarding passes.

Gayathri looked around in mild awe, still absorbing the transition from a quiet village to the buzzing airport.

Rishi guided her through check-in, luggage, and security. She still seemed surprised by how efficiently he navigated the process.

"This is different from my usual train travels," she said softly. "I usually… worry, overthink… lose track."

Rishi shook his head. "Not today. You'll have time to relax before the interview prep in Delhi."

Soon, they boarded the plane, settling into their seats. Gayathri stared out of the window as the engines roared to life.

"I still can't believe you switched us to a flight," she said, half-laughing, half-exasperated.

Rishi leaned back. "Sometimes life gives you a faster way if you're willing to take it. Plus…" he paused, watching her expression carefully, "it's your interview. You need energy, focus, and a little comfort along the way."

She nodded, grateful, the earlier shock fading into quiet appreciation.

Hours later, as night fell over Delhi, the plane descended, the city lights sparkling below like scattered stars.

Rishi and Gayathri deboarded, collecting their bags. The air was cooler here, carrying the distant scent of winter, traffic, and city life.

"I guess this is it," Gayathri said, straightening her jacket. "Tomorrow… the interview."

Rishi nodded. "Yes. And you'll do well."

She smiled, tucking her hair behind her ear. "Thank you… for everything. Today, the journey, the documents… the flight. I wouldn't have managed it alone."

Rishi gave a small, reassuring smile. "You wouldn't have to. That's why I'm here."

Before leaving the airport, they paused for a quick photo together—a small memento of a journey that had started in Sriperumbudur, passed through trains and buses, and now arrived in Delhi.

Click.

The shutter captured more than a moment; it captured the quiet bond forged through shared stories, silent understanding, and unexpected decisions.

With a final nod, Rishi turned toward his cab, ready to continue his journey toward his family, leaving Gayathri to prepare for her crucial day.

The night embraced Delhi as they parted ways—two travelers on intersecting paths, both carrying the weight of past responsibilities and the quiet hope of journeys yet to come.
