Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: Decision

"I choose you," Lala suddenly said.

"Huh?!!!"

[What am I, a Pokémon?]

I looked at Lala with surprise.

"What do you mean?" I looked at her, hearing her strange words.

"I choose you as my fiancé," she said, smiling brightly.

"No thanks…" Kanon's reply was instant.

"Eh?!! But why?" Lala asked, surprised.

"Being engaged to you sounds like a huge pain. You should find someone else. Someone you know who is more suited to you and can be a ruler. You are a princess after all." I explain my reason for refusing.

"You said I can choose my own fiancé, and I believe that someone like you, who helps others selflessly, is the most suitable person with whom I want to spend my life."

With those words, she stares right into my eyes, not breaking eye contact.

"..."

"..."

We stared at each other, a clash of wills.

"Kanon, why is it taking you so long, and what's with all the commotion?!!" Mikan barged in and came across a strange sight.

In the room, she saw Kanon arguing with a girl in a strange bodysuit, while two men were tied up in the corner.

"..."

Seeing the abnormality, Mikan's eyes sharpen. "Explain what's going on here?"

Mikan looked at Kanon for an explanation.

..

.

I had to explain the bizarre situation I found myself in. It should be bizarre for her, at least so he thought.

"So, you're saying she and those two tied-up guys are aliens?" She looked at Lala with curiosity.

"I know it's difficult to believe, but…" She ignored me, walked past me, and began chatting with Lala.

"So, you are an alien." She looked all over her body, trying to see what was different about her.

Lala, too, let her observe; she even turned around and showed off her tail.

"So, she has a tail and is super pretty, huh?"

"Hello, I am Mikan Yuki. It's nice to meet you. What should I call you?"

"I am Lala. From planet Deviluke," she introduced.

"Lala, it's nice to meet you."

I was dumbfounded as I watched Mikan and Lala chat happily, as if this situation were normal. She even asked her to join us for dinner.

I decided to follow them, but first I took some duct tape and used it to cover the mouths of both of Lala's guards, effectively silencing them.

"This should keep them silent."

With that, I headed down.

I took my seat beside Lala and saw that she was already enjoying the food.

"You know, you look a whole lot calmer than I expected you to react."

"And what did you expect? I react like a little girl? Screaming and yelling," Mikan responded with a smirk.

"Yeah, that should be the normal reaction."

Mikan huffed, hearing that.

With a sigh, I decided to stop and ask a different question.

"So what do you think I should do?" I asked her opinion.

Mikan looked at me as if it were obvious. "You decided to help her, didn't you? So, do it. What's stopping you?"

"She is a runaway alien princess, you know; of course, it's complicated."

"What's complicated about us getting engaged?" Lala said, cutting in.

"You unexpectedly appeared and asked me to marry you. No matter how I look at it, it was too soon for you to decide. I don't even know you well enough to respond," I said.

"Kanon, you helped me, saved me, and encouraged me to make my own choices. That made me truly happy. Before that moment, I always felt pressured to meet others' expectations and limited to what they wanted me to do. No one had ever asked me what I wanted, especially as the first princess. Even my father reinforced this by insisting that I choose someone from his selected candidates."

"Is that why you ran?" Mikan asked.

Lala nodded. "Yes, I was just so tired of this… so I ran."

Lala then looked at Kanon with the expression of a maiden in love. "And then I met you. Even knowing I was a runaway princess, you looked at me and said, 'You can choose someone whom you think is worthy.' For the first time, I felt seen as an individual rather than just a beautiful princess. You have no idea how happy that made me. At that moment, I knew you were the one. You made me fall in love with you, Kanon Yuki."

"..."

"..."

Both Mikan and I fell silent, listening to her heartfelt confession and seeing her pure, innocent, loving expression directed at me.

Mikan smirked. "Wow, Kanon, who would have thought you had it in you to make a princess fall in love?"

Kanon also didn't know what to say here. In both of his lives combined, he had never experienced anything like this. At least he knows why that friend of his was so infatuated with her. Lala definitely has the makings of a top wifu.

Rumble

Rumble

"I…" Before I could even respond to Lala, the whole house shook violently, and the lights flickered on and off repeatedly.

"What is going on? This doesn't seem like a normal earthquake." Mikan said in a panic.

"Trouble, I say."

We headed outside to see what was going on, only to find, right above our house, a large UFO hovering.

"..."

"Lala, is that here for you?" I asked, my eyes narrowed at the UFO.

"Yes,"

Then a part of the UFO opened, and a grey-haired man, dressed in bone-like, demonic-looking armour, floated down from it.

"Zastin."

Lala spoke the name of the man walking towards us.

"Princess Lala, your games are over. I have come to take you home," he spoke with authority and sternness.

"No, I will not return," Lala responded with the same level of seriousness.

"Oh? And why would that be? You even left your duties just to run away." Zastin reminded Lala.

"I don't see any reason for you to stay here. What could possibly be on this planet that caught your attention?"

Hearing that, Lala smiled. "I won't go back because I have found a reason to stay."

"And what might that be?" Zastin stared at her.

She took a deep breath. "I, Lala Satalin Deviluke, the first princess of the Deviluke Empire, have chosen my fiancé. His name is Kanon Yuki," she finished.

Zastin narrowed his eyes. "I'm guessing the one you have chosen is the male Earthling standing behind. Am I correct?"

"Yes, I have chosen him as my husband-to-be. That's why I will stay." Lala declared.

While Lala was talking to that guy called Zastin, Mikan noticed something odd.

"Kanon, something feels off. All these events are happening, but no one else is around except us," Mikan said after looking around.

Kanon also noticed it; his heightened senses detected a strange displacement of the space around him.

"It seems some kind of barrier around us is placed, preventing us from leaving and them from perceiving us."

Mikan, hearing that, nodded. "That makes sense."

"But how did you know?" Mikan asked, puzzled about this sudden knowledge.

Hearing her question, I sweated a bit.

"I read a manga where there was a similar thing," I said with a straight face.

"I see." Mikan felt something was off, but she remembered a sci-fi manga with elements like these, so she couldn't quite pinpoint what was wrong.

"So, what will you do now? Lala looks very serious about you being her fiancé." Mikan said, looking at how serious Lala is.

"You know it's not even been 3 hours since I met her. Don't you think it's just too fast?"

"Kanon, as a girl, I can assure you of this: it only takes a single moment for a girl to fall in love. For her, you were that moment. She is ready to fight for you, but are you willing to respond to her feelings?" Mikan said.

"..."

"You there, earthling," I heard the Zastin guy calling out to me.

"Are you the one who proposed to Princess Lala?" He looked at me with a scrutinising gaze.

"Well, it's the other way around, but yeah, I guess," I said with a sigh.

"I see." Zastin then drew the hilt of a sword from his waist.

In the next moment, from the hilt of the sword without a blade, a green Western blade, resembling a laser blade, was released.

"Prepare, earthling. I must test you myself to see whether you are worthy of Princess Lala." Zastin pointed his laser blade at Kanon.

"Zastin you…" Lala tried to say something to Zastin, but she was cut off.

"Stay out of this, Princess Lala! I must test him myself and inform the king. You will not interfere in this." Zastin warned.

Lala fell silent, her fist clenched. She realised that she could not get involved in this situation.

"Kanon, I—I'm sorry. I wasn't able to convince him and drag you into this." Lala was looking down at her feet.

"Hahhh… I will take care of this." I stepped forward, seeing things getting out of hand.

On hearing his response, she stared at him. "Will you be fine? I know you are strong, but Zastin is the strongest swordsman on the planet, Deviluke."

Kanon could hear the worry in her voice, but right now, he heard something interesting.

"Oh, is that so?" A smile appeared on his face.

Mikan saw that smile and shook her head in trouble. "Oh, Lala, you have said it now."

"Huh? What did I say?" She was confused.

"Kanon is generally normal, but he changes when martial arts or a strong person related to it is involved."

Lala observed Kanon, who had a battle-hungry smile as he stared intently at Zastin.

"Say, Lala, do you have a sword or spear I can use?" I asked her.

Lala shook her head. "I don't have anything like that."

"I see, then…" I then gestured for her to get closer, and I whispered.

Hearing what I wanted her to do, Lala nodded. "I can do that, but why?"

"For now, I want to keep this from my sister," I explained to her.

However, with aliens involved, he will eventually need to reveal his strength.

"If this helps," Lala nodded.

"Hey, Zastin, was it? You want to test me, right? Let's go somewhere else; I don't think this place is appropriate for such endeavours, don't you think?"

Zastin looked around the area and nodded. "You are right. Then I shall teleport us to the closest free space."

The UFO above us emitted a bright light, and in an instant, we all vanished from our location. The UFO then moved to a nearby spot above the park, where the light shone down again.

I felt our surroundings shift as I found myself and everyone in the park suddenly.

"What just happened?" Mikan asked, feeling the sudden shift.

"It's Tele-transport, a technology the spaceship has," Lala explained.

"I see," I said, although I didn't fully understand what had happened. Nevertheless, I prepared myself.

I again felt the displacement of space as parallel dimensions formed around the park, concealing everything from the outside.

With my signal, Lala spoke. "Use this Kanon."

I matched her timing and pulled out the Omnisword from my item box, disguising it to make it look as if Lala was doing it, perfectly hiding it from Mikan.

Zastin, seeing the sword in my hand, took his stance. "It seems you are a swordsman as well," he said.

"I will assess your abilities myself. Get ready!"
