Chapter 56 - machinations against time

From that point on Sathuna and Marchosias worked together tirelessly trying to found a method to bypass the universal regressions caused by Arthur Moonleaf's death from his [aspect's] power.

In exchange for his assistance Marchosias only requested the recorded data of temporal energies from the regressions and after the rituals effects were done successfully,

Now that the contract was established. The two of them were hypnotised in the pursuit of knowledge trying to create a ritual that could safeguard the memories of the caster. The entire observatory's walls of blackboards were covered with writing and equations from their efforts.

"What if we apply this equation here? It could work as a covalent between spatial and temporal bonds during the regression and act as a thread to the spells network."

"You forget just how strange time is. Being as liquid as it is gaseous. The bonds could work but rather than the desired outcome you could accidentally bring a random organ or body part back to the past instead of your consciousness if the target is not specified as precisely as possible."

"I see... then in that case this should work."

At the same time as them Clara was absentmindedly working at a small workshop in the corner of the observatory. Using materials from my body to try and create a recording device.

For someone of Clara's mechanical and engineering skill such a thing was ordinarily easy. The only issue was the fact she was limited by materials strictly from my physical and spiritual bodies. It also needed to be capable of holding several yottabyte's worth of data to record the regress of time on a universal scale.

She used my bones as the base material. Crystal fragments from my three hearts as hard-drives to store the data. My dream feather's as the wires. And bark from the world tree Sefirot within my throne-world for other parts to try and expand the data storage capabilities.

"If i put this here... shorten this here... the crystals from Strife's heart could potentially be able to reach another yottabyte. But that still won't be enough storage capacity for information on a universal scale. The device needs to be bigger to accommodate the mass amount of storage. It won't be possible to make it as small as Sathuna asked me to."

While they were all doing this i was swapping between doing various things. Training in martial arts with various melee weapons to pass the time, and watching Arthur Moonleaf through the ink-spirits i had observing him in case he got himself killed. If I wasn't doing either of these i was usually giving Clara more materials from my body because her prototypes blew up.

Then after several years the pilgrimage of Laegii was started by the in this new time line and Sathuna as well as Marchosias started observing Arthur Moonleaf's soul and [aspect] the best they could. Even having me influence the pilgrimage with my admin privileges over the to get a clear recreation of Arthur's soul.

Naive fool summed it up as his actions changing the future slightly. But he wasn't nearly famous or powerful enough yet as a mortal for him to be so proud of himself.

Other than that though another pair of people caught my curiosity. The overseer's of Laegii's pilgrimage on behalf of the CGA were two people who i knew.

Cayde Barbaten and Silven Windrega, both of whom are from the timeline myself and Thorn are from.

With the sobriquet [hell-king: lost silver raven], Cayde Barbaten is currently victim the devils inheritor curse. Called Corvus and the Zorain of Gold by many. Doing this work by order of the CGA on behalf of the pantheon .

The other overseer was known as [artists regality] by the , but revered as the Guardian of Artistry by everyone across the universe. That was Silven Windrega, one of the few people i dare say has a right to call themself a hero.

It was clear why they both chose to overseer the pilgrimage. They wanted to see what Laegii was like after Cayde Barbaten's death. But the issue that clearly shocked both of them was that Cayde Barbaten didn't exist in this timeline. He died in a forest as a baby.

It didn't cross my mind before but now that i see them both I'm left wondering what will happen to those two if we left time timeline's regression as is. They would inevitably cease to exist and causality would fix that error by completely forgetting all memory of them in the universe.

For Corvus that's alright but unfortunately that just unacceptable to me for Silven's sake. He's one of the few people that actually give me expectations of humanity being anything but selfish its annoying that my brother's are a two for one deal. If i could save one and get rid of the other that would be perfect.

"Hey, Sathuna!" Clara called while myself and Thorn were watching the confused faces of Silven and Corvus through the stream from a sofa in the observatory. "There's an issue with the device i need to discuss with you!" Approaching me watching the stream on the sofa Clara asked, "have you seen Sathuna, Strife?"

"Atop the staircase leading to the observatory's ceiling." I informed while twirling my finger through the feathers atop Thorn's nape while he napped on me.

"Thanks."

Clara pranced off going past an exhausted Marchosias who was busy inhaling his cigarette while disheveled across the floor using a book as a blanket to sleep under. Then climbing up a ladder she went up several shoddily built floors in the observatory before reaching the top. Finding Sathuna being fed medicine by her assistant Flower who was now much older and capable of using magic to help her legs walk.

"Sathuna, little but of bad news." Clara said warily. "I just ran the projections for the data devices storage capacity but even with its enlarged size its not built to be able to sustain data on a universal scale. I think it would be better to simply use the device to copy your memories and the import them into your past self's memory. Its more than capable of that at this point."

Rubbing her temples Sathuna was tired. "We need the full data of the time reversal's effects on the entire universe, Clara. This is non-negotiable."

"Well its just not possible! I'm sorry!" Clara argued. "Unless the storage device is a big as a supergiant star—no— ten times even that! It still won't be enough! At best with its current size it could record maybe a tenth of the Connected Galaxies but beyond that its just not possible. Creating more won't solve the issue. Unless the device is as big as a galaxy it still won't be possible but we don't have those kind of resources even with Strife's apocalyi helping build it."

Inhaling a heavy breath Sathuna dismissed Flower who quickly went down the steps Clara came from and exited the observatory waving goodbye to me as she went.

Pondering for a long moment Sathuna's mind was exhausted. Making it difficult for her to come up with any conclusive thoughts.

I on the other hand just had an idea after overhearing them. "What if we used the world tree of time, Virelthelas, somehow. It's effectively a conduit of all temporal energies in the entire universe. It should also be immune to the universal regressions as its a conduit of all time in the universe similarly to the [möbius strip empyrean]."

Hearing me from above, Clara and Sathuna peeked over the edge to stare at me looking up at them from the sofa.

"Such a thing exists?" Clara questioned.

"Yep. Deep in the fourth dimension in a place called the Chronogrove." I stated before taking a mbite out of an apple. "Not far from the and galaxies. Coincidentally closest to the galaxy where the golden baby constantly meditates actually. I'm sure he's known about it for ages but never told me." Grumbling for a moment i finished saying, "just approaching it would kill most. Time is so erratic around it that a few million years could pass through you like a gust of wind."

Staring at me like it was tiresome Sathuna spoke in a fed-up tone. "And you didn't reveal this existence until now because..?"

"Didn't think it would be important to say. The only people who can approach Virelthelas have to either age extremely slowly or be near timeless like myself. Same goes for any materials from outside the fourth dimension. The second they're brought in they disappear like dust in the wind."

"How did you even stumble upon such a discovery?" Sathuna interrogated.

"Uhh..."

Remembering a lot of bird-like primordial's squawking in anger as well as a sentient black hole. Followed by a detonation of my [regalius breaker] before being carried by temporal currents in a dead-state. To then resurrect at one of Virelthelas' roots. The story became a lot more complex than i remembered.

"So me and Thorn stole an egg from a primordial that was called Big Bird-"

"Stop. I already don't understand how." Sathuna huffed in interruption before waving her hand to dismiss her previous question. Thinking for a short few seconds she revised the plan, "refit the data storage device to act like an emitter and to be able to isolate and record anomalous reversals of data among a sea of information. You'll have to build a receiver for it that can share the information into the computer downstairs."

"That can be done in like an hour." Clara shrugged with a confident tone. "Though then it won't be able to carry back your memories of this timeline back with it to return them from you. Want me to create a separate device for that? I've got enough scraps for it."

"Please do, Clara."

At Sathuna's request the short girl climbed down from the upper floors of the observatory. "It likely the receiver could get lost if we just leave it Strife so I'll hand it to you to give to Sathuna post-regression along with the memory storage devices." Clara stated to me. "Once I'm done redesigning the temporal data collector take it to this 'Virelthelas' you mentioned and stab its connector deep into the world tree's trunk so it can tap into the data flow. The receiver and memo-storer's should be done by the time you return."

"Alright~."

Going to her workshop Clara left the observatory leaving me to continue watching the stream of Laegii's pilgrimage. At the same time Sathuna's strong stare stabbed deep into my back as she wondered how many more secrets of things like Virelthelas i had hidden away.

Slowly the hour passed until Clara returned, poking her head through the observatory's door to say, "Strife! I'm done with the data transferrer. You can take it to Virelthelas now."

Getting up from the sofa the floating screen blinked out of existence and i patted the top of Clara's head. "Good work, little genius."

"Stop treating me like I'm a kid!" Clara demanded as she swatted my hand off.

"Mmm, no." As Clara huffed angrily i stepped outside the observatory with Thorn asleep in my jackets hood before my eyes landed on the device. "This thing is smaller than i remember."

With a spherical shape the orb with a twelve-foot diameter made of bone material and golden tree bark as well as other materials all from my own body and powers towered above in its construction area just outside the observatory.

"Just listen to the instructions." Clara requested before pushing her hand into the orb. Making it eject three six-foot blades. "These are the pins. They'll be responsible for tapping into the information flow within the world tree of time Virelthelas. All you need to do is stab them into it. They should be long enough the push through the bark and tap into the tree's internal network, but if you need to extend the blades just push in deeper where i first pressed. It should record all the anomalous information and send it to the receiver automatically."

"Nifty." I complimented before waving my hand opening a void tear to suck the giant orb into. "So just plug it into the tree by brute force anywhere or...?"

"If there is an information centre that all data flows through in Virelthelas. Put it as close to that as you can. I've never built any devices that need to be used on world tree's before so don't be afraid to bring it back so i can transfigure it for better optimisation."

"It should be fine as is." Moving swiftly i saluted goodbye with two fingers. "I'll be back by morning hopefully."

Waving me off Clara watched as the [mach void] spell beamed under my feet taking me up into the sky before vanishing.
