The room felt different when Alaric returned to it after his last class. Quieter. Like the entire academy had shifted gears from routine into something more significant.
His roommate, Daven, a broad-shouldered boy with an easy manner and careful eyes was already dressed when Alaric pushed the door open. Dark formal wear that suited his frame. Hair actually combed for once.
He looked up when Alaric entered. "You joining the auction tonight?"
"Planning on it." Alaric moved to his wardrobe. Started pulling out the formal wear Vanessia had packed alongside his regular clothes. Of course she'd prepared.
Daven sat on the edge of his bed. Watched Alaric without speaking for a moment.
Then...
"I wanted to go too, at the auction." He paused. "But I can't."
Alaric glanced at him. Waiting.
Daven shook his head. Something passing across his face that he clearly decided not to pursue.
"Never mind. Forget I said anything."
He stood and adjusted his jacket.
