Recently, another shift occurred within the Gotei Thirteen.
However, this time, it was not the long-vacant position of the Third Division that drew attention.
Instead
The change came from the Sixth Division.
The Sixth Division had long been known as the division of noble authority.
While not officially designated as such in doctrine, its captains were traditionally drawn from the Kuchiki clan, one of the Four Great Noble Houses. Over generations, this unwritten rule had solidified into expectation.
More importantly, the Sixth Division worked closely with the Central 46 Chambers, often handling internal enforcement, law, and discipline within Seireitei.
Thus, its captain was not merely a military leader
But a symbol of order.
And nobility itself.
Kuchiki Ginrei, the long-standing captain of the Sixth Division and head of the Kuchiki clan, had held his position for many years.
His authority was unquestioned.
His presence alone represented the dignity of aristocracy.
For a long time, many wondered who would succeed him.
That question lingered especially after the death of his son, Kuchiki Sōjun.
Until
Kuchiki Byakuya rose.
From a young age, Byakuya displayed overwhelming talent.
His mastery of Zanjutsu, his control over Reiryoku, and his composure all marked him as the unquestionable heir to both:
The Kuchiki clan leadership
The Captaincy of the Sixth Division
The only uncertainty was timing.
No one expected that moment to arrive so soon.
Without much prior warning, Kuchiki Ginrei stepped down, citing age and the need to pass responsibility to the next generation.
He personally recommended Byakuya as his successor.
Though the recommendation carried immense weight, the Gotei Thirteen still required a Captain Proficiency Test.
Byakuya passed.
Decisively.
Despite his youth, his strength silenced most doubts.
Still
Not all were convinced.
His face was young.
Too young.
Among the ranks of the Gotei Thirteen, whispers spread quietly. Doubt did not disappear it merely retreated beneath the surface.
The succession ceremony was held with full grandeur.
As the Kuchiki clan was the foremost noble house, the event was conducted with strict formality and elegance, displaying the authority and prestige of aristocracy to all of Seireitei.
Byakuya stood at its center
Composed.
Immaculate.
Untouchable.
In a single night, he became both:
Captain of the Sixth Division
Head of the Kuchiki Clan
To many Shinigami, he became an object of admiration.
A perfect noble.
A perfect captain.
But that same night
Within the inner residence of the Kuchiki estate—
A second ceremony quietly took place.
A ceremony unseen by the public.
There were only three witnesses.
Kuchiki Ginrei.
Kuchiki Byakuya.
And
A woman.
Her name was Hisana.
A soul from Rukongai.
Not a noble.
Not even a Shinigami.
Merely a Plus. a soul with little spiritual power.
Fragile.
Unremarkable.
And yet
The woman Byakuya chose.
The ceremony was simple.
There were no grand displays.
No audience.
No declarations to the outside world.
Only quiet acknowledgment.
A union that defied centuries of rigid tradition.
After the ceremony concluded, Ginrei remained silent for a long time.
At last, his aged voice broke the stillness.
"I could not give you a more suitable match."
Byakuya answered calmly,
"There is no need for apology."
"This is my choice."
Ginrei studied his grandson carefully.
In the end, he said nothing more.
He turned and left.
When the room emptied, only Byakuya and Hisana remained.
The distance between noble and commoner
Vanished.
A sudden cough broke the silence.
"Cough…!"
Hisana turned aside, her body trembling.
Byakuya immediately stepped forward, supporting her.
"You should not have pushed yourself."
His voice, usually cold and distant, softened noticeably.
"The ceremony was already simplified."
"I'm fine…" Hisana replied weakly, forcing a smile. "This… is important to me."
"If your grandfather knew my condition… he might not have allowed this."
Byakuya's expression did not change.
"That is no longer relevant."
"I will find a way to heal you."
Hisana lowered her gaze.
Then, as if remembering something vital, she clutched his sleeve tightly.
"Rukia…"
"Byakuya… please… you must find her…"
Her voice trembled not from weakness, but from guilt.
"I abandoned her… when we were still in Rukongai…"
"I cannot rest without knowing…"
Byakuya met her eyes.
For a moment, the weight of his title seemed to fade.
"I will find her."
He spoke without hesitation.
A promise.
He gently laid Hisana down and covered her with care.
Outside
The Kuchiki estate remained silent.
But within its walls
A secret had already taken root.
Though hidden from most Shinigami, such matters rarely escaped the notice of the noble class.
And, inevitably
It reached certain ears.
"Byakuya got married?"
Kyōraku Shunsui raised an eyebrow, sake cup in hand.
"To a woman from Rukongai, no less."
Gosuke Shigure listened quietly.
Even he found it unexpected.
"The head of the Kuchiki clan… marrying a commoner," he murmured.
Shunsui sighed.
"Love tends to ignore status."
His thoughts drifted briefly to his own past.
To the Ise family.
To loss.
Gosuke Shigure spoke again, more thoughtfully.
"It won't last."
Shunsui glanced at him.
"You sound certain."
"It's not about emotion," Gosuke replied. "It's about Reiryoku."
"In Soul Society, environments are formed from Reishi."
"The density of Reishi within Seireitei is far higher than in Rukongai."
"For Shinigami, this is natural. Our bodies are composed of spiritual matter, reinforced by Reiryoku."
"But a Plus with low spiritual power…"
He paused slightly.
"…cannot withstand that density indefinitely."
Shunsui's expression grew more serious.
"You mean…"
"Yes."
Gosuke continued calmly,
"Living in Seireitei will gradually burden her soul."
"If nothing changes, her condition will worsen over time."
"There is a solution," he added.
"Byakuya could move her to Rukongai."
Shunsui chuckled bitterly.
"That's not happening."
Gosuke nodded.
"He is now both captain and clan head."
"He has already broken one rule."
"He will not abandon the rest."
Silence settled between them.
Love had crossed the boundary of class.
But in Soul Society
Even love was not free from consequence.
And for Kuchiki Byakuya
This choice would become one of the defining burdens of his life.
