CHAPTER SIX: THE ECHO IN THE STONE

Three days had passed since Emperor Orion led the imperial contingent toward the Eastern Quadrant.

Inside the Emerald Palace, a heavy, expectant quiet lingered over every hallway. High above the capital, the floating mountains drifted along their usual paths, but their evening glow felt dimmer, casting long, pale shadows across the white marble courtyards.

Prince Rain stood in the private training pavilion overlooking the lower gardens. His white linen undershirt was soaked with sweat, his breathing deep and rhythmic. He held a wooden practice sword in his right hand, his posture low and locked into the primary position of *The Foundation of Jade*.

Across from him stood Master Vance, holding a silver-tipped wooden staff.

"Your center of gravity is drifting to the right, Prince Rain," Vance observed sharply, his dark eyes tracking every tiny adjustment in Rain's stance. "You are favoring your rear foot because your mind is anticipating a strike that has not yet been launched. In true combat, anticipation born of anxiety creates dead weight."

Rain did not break his stance. He closed his eyes, inhaling deeply through his nose.

He reached out with his senses, seeking the deep, steady pulse of the crystal networks running beneath the marble floor. But instead of the clear, vibrant hum he had felt during his earlier lessons, the energy below felt strangely muted—like a stream muffled beneath thick winter ice.

"The pulse is changing, Master Vance," Rain said softly, opening his eyes. His emerald gaze was locked onto the tip of Vance's staff.

"The pulse responds to the state of the realm," Vance replied, stepping forward with a swift, fluid thrust of his staff toward Rain's left shoulder. "Which is precisely why a warrior's internal discipline must remain absolute, regardless of external fluctuations."

Rain did not meet the strike with force. Remembering the principles of Imperial Kinetic Redirection, he shifted his left heel inward, pivoting his hips forty-five degrees. As the wooden staff slid past his torso, Rain extended his left hand, guiding the wood along its original vector while channeling a micro-burst of kinetic energy through his palm.

*Crack.*

The subtle release of force caught the tip of Vance's staff, deflecting it clean off course and forcing the scholar to take two quick steps forward to regain his balance.

Rain did not push the advantage. He stepped back into a neutral stance, lowering his wooden blade to his side.

Vance straightened his navy robes, a rare look of quiet approval settling over his stern face. "Your kinetic timing has improved significantly. You no longer fight the incoming force; you let it clear its own path."

"Master Vance!"

The urgent voice of Commander Kael's second-in-command, Captain Lyron, echoed across the stone pavilion. The officer sprinted into the courtyard, his white armor clanking lightly with every rapid step. He carried a glowing communication crystal in his hand, its surface pulsing with a rapid, irregular red light.

Vance turned immediately, his relaxed posture instantly vanishing. "Report, Captain."

"An emergency message from the forward camp at the Eastern Quadrant," Lyron panted, holding up the crystal. A low-frequency holographic image flickered to life above the stone floor, displaying the jagged terrain of the Shadowed Ridge.

The holographic projection showed heavy smoke rising from the base of the cliffside. The massive emerald crystal conduit embedded in the rock wall was no longer glowing green. It stood completely drained, transformed into a cold, pitch-black pillar of lifeless stone.

Emperor Orion's voice broke through the audio static—deep, firm, but laced with an underlying urgency Rain had never heard from his father before.

*"...The seal on the lower threshold has been compromised from the inside..."* Orion's voice crackled through the projection. *"The energy decay is spreading along conduit line seven toward the central array. We are holding the perimeter, but the Ashen energy is non-vibrational—it is absorbing our kinetic barriers..."*

The signal flickered violently before cutting off into quiet static.

Rain stood frozen in the center of the pavilion, his knuckles turning white around the hilt of his wooden sword. The small pale scar above his right eyebrow throbbed with a sharp, sudden heat—the same cold, prickling sensation he had felt three nights ago in the secret archives.

Vance turned to Captain Lyron with absolute calm, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp tone of command. "Seal the lower archive vaults immediately. Raise the defensive energy shields over the high dome, and inform Empress Lyra that the High Council must convene at once."

"Understood, sir!" Lyron saluted and turned, sprinting back toward the central palace.

Vance turned his gaze back to Rain. The young prince was staring at the blank spot where his father's holographic image had just vanished.

"Prince Rain," Vance said gently, laying a firm hand on the nine-year-old's shoulder. "Go to your sister's quarters. Ensure she remains inside with the guard detail."

Rain looked up at the grand scholar. His young face was pale, but his emerald eyes burned with a clear, unwavering focus that mirrored his father's.

"The Ashen energy isn't just breaking the conduits, is it, Master Vance?" Rain asked, his voice low and steady. "It's coming for the core stone."

Vance looked at the heir to the Emerald Empire for a long moment, realizing that trying to shield the boy from the truth was no longer possible.

"Yes, Prince Rain," Vance answered softly into the quiet morning air. "The shadow has awakened. And it is moving toward the capital."
