"No! Impossible! You can't have that kind of power!" the Juggernaut roared, his voice filled with disbelief as he continued to hurl punches at Kitty.
Initially startled by his crazed reaction, Kitty instinctively raised her hands to block. But even as the Juggernaut's fists slammed against her palms, she caught every blow. It was only then that she fully grasped what was happening.
She kicked him away, then pulled off her X-Men jacket, revealing the black and gold Kryptonian suit Clark's biological father had given her, emblazoned with the symbol of hope.
"Are you Superwoman?" Jimmy asked, his eyes wide. Although confined, the experimenters had treated him well, and he had access to television. He knew about Superman.
"If only I were," Kitty replied. "Then Clark wouldn't have had to go to the sun alone."
She finally understood her sudden strength. There were two reasons. On one hand, the Juggernaut had come within range of Jimmy, causing his mutant power to vanish.
He was no longer unstoppable, just a very large man. On the other hand, the Kryptonian suit was giving her an incredible boost.
For a Kryptonian under a yellow sun, the suit's enhancements were negligible, but for an ordinary person, it was enough to turn them into a "little Superman."
"You... I'm going to kill you!" the Juggernaut yelled, getting back to his feet. With his limited intellect, he didn't seem to feel fear. He rushed forward again, still unaware of why his powers had disappeared.
This time, Kitty felt no fear. She braced herself against his charge, holding him at bay with one hand. Watching his shocked expression, she smiled. "Hey, kid, Kryptonian tech."
With that, she delivered a controlled punch to his head. It was just enough to knock him unconscious without killing him.
"Alright, Jimmy, let's go," she said. She punched a hole in the wall behind them and led Jimmy out of the lab, toward a secluded part of the island.
The Front Lines
On the front lines, Erik suddenly frowned. He had been using the metal on the Juggernaut to track his location, but the signal had just stopped. The big guy had been defeated. Erik looked at the few remaining soldiers and mutants, then at the X-Men who were effortlessly dominating the fight. He knew he had to act.
"John, it's time," he said.
"Understood!"
John, the Pyro, limped forward, still suffering from the gunshot wound to his thigh. His power, controlling fire, wasn't affected by his slow gait. As John took position, Erik waved his hand.
A massive number of abandoned cars from the bridge flew into the air, becoming weapons aimed at the X-Men. John's task was to ignite these cars as they flew overhead, turning them from heavy objects into flaming cannonballs.
The explosions destroyed the last of the human soldiers' resistance. Even the X-Men were forced to take cover, using their agility to avoid the fiery blasts. The combined firepower of Erik and John was too much; they couldn't stay hidden forever, but with Erik surrounded by metal, they had no good way to counter him.
Then, there was a sudden movement in the water. As a wave of cold air spread, Bobby Drake, the Iceman, emerged from behind John, wrapping his arms around him and tackling him to the side.
"Now's our chance!" Scott shouted, immediately looking at Ororo. "Ororo, fog!"
"On it!"
The two of Charles's original students had perfect battlefield coordination. Ororo immediately understood Scott's plan. A thick, white mist enveloped the entire island, reducing visibility to less than a few feet.
"You're planning to fight like this?" Erik asked, but he had no way to control the weather. He could only rely on his senses. He could perceive the metal in Wolverine's body, but the others were almost invisible to him. He was forced to enter the fog and fight hand-to-hand.
The battle between Bobby and John had already begun.
"Coward! You finally dare to fight me! I'll show you what I learned outside, you little lap dog!" John taunted, believing Bobby, who had grown up in the safety of the academy, was no match for him.
John ignited a small flame, then spun it into a massive vortex, wrapping it around Bobby.
"John, stop this!" Bobby yelled, spraying cold air from his hands to resist. But he was quickly overwhelmed. Just as John expected, the gentle training at the academy was no match for the brutal special training under Erik. The heat from John's flames was far stronger than Bobby's cold air.
"You're too weak," John mocked, increasing the intensity of his flame. "You should go back to school and date your girlfriend, not fight on a battlefield!" During his three years with Erik, he had learned what ruthlessness was. Killing was just a means to an end.
"No... it's you who should go home!"
In that moment of crisis, Iceman's body transformed. While Erik had taught John how to use his power to kill, Charles had taught Bobby how to control his abilities. In that moment, Bobby's power underwent a second evolution. The frost wasn't just coming from his hands; his entire body turned into a crystalline, impenetrable ice.
