Nick Fury took a deep breath, and Coulson stood silently beside him. They had to admit they had been naive. Despite all their profiling and intelligence, they had underestimated Superman. Nick Fury, even with his calm demeanor, had a certain pride as the Director, an inevitable feeling when dealing with someone like Superman.

"I understand," Fury said. The best news was that Superman wasn't holding a grudge about Richard's disappearance. Given that, the best approach now was honesty, with no more tests.

"Superman, is the mutant war so serious that you needed to enter the sun to absorb energy?" This was the real reason Fury had sought him out. He barely understood the Phoenix Force himself, and his intel was limited to a vague awareness of a new battle.

Clark nodded. "There is a mutant with a powerful cosmic energy parasite. She's lost control. I'm going to fight her soon."

"Do you need help? What can we do?" Fury asked. He didn't doubt Clark's words, not only because he knew his character, but also because there was no reason for him to lie.

"Help? Yes, there is," Clark said after a moment's thought. "I'll try to move the battle to space, but based on my attitude, you can guess the enemy is powerful. Be ready for evacuations and rescues. You should start now."

Before Fury could ask who the mutant was, Clark was gone.

"Where's Superman?" Fury asked, looking around.

"Director, he left while you were looking down," Coulson said.

"Damn it," Fury muttered. "He's Superman, but he acts like Batman. Coulson, get me a report. I need to brief the Security Council immediately. It's time they take this seriously."

"That's enough. Stop it."

Clark arrived at the lab in a flash, just as Erik had defeated the X-Men, leaving only Logan standing.

"Clark!" Erik's already pained head hurt even more at the sight of him. "So you've chosen to side with the humans and exterminate mutants? Is this Superman's choice?"

Clark landed slowly. "I don't belong to any side, and I've never thought about exterminating mutants."

"Then what are you doing? How is this different from extermination? Forty years ago, you spoke of a future for mutants. Forty years later, I've seen nothing!" Clark's eyes flickered. He hadn't expected Erik to remember that day.

"You didn't expect it, did you, Superman? I took off my helmet for the future you spoke of. But forty years of harsh reality made me put it back on. You're a liar. You don't have the power to give mutants a future. The whole world watches you. You're more restricted than the entire mutant community."

Clark was silent. Erik was right. He was watched more closely than any mutant. No one knew if a mutant could destroy the world, but everyone knew Superman could.

"You're right," Clark conceded, but quickly changed the subject. "But that was my past. Now, there is only one thing I need to do: stop this meaningless fight."

"In that case..." Erik's teeth ground together. "Then let's fight for our lives!"

With a roar, Erik unleashed his full power. In his youth, he had the ability to threaten the world, to shake the planet's foundations and reverse its magnetic field. Now, risking his life, he could only make this isolated island tremble. His ability to control the magnetic field had become so weak.

The sand and stones on the ground, seemingly non-metallic, contained enough trace metal to be manipulated by Erik. They rushed toward Clark at missile speeds, but he simply stood there.

The stones and metal shattered to pieces upon impact with his skin. Erik then shaped the broken metal into molecular-thin blades and sent them at Clark, but the attack that had required Clark's full attention three years ago was now useless. The blades disintegrated in mid-air.

"You fool! You fool!" Erik roared, spitting blood. He was overexerting his body. He tore the entire laboratory apart, turning it into a storm of rubble and attacking Clark from all directions.

Clark ignored the assault. His attention was on the scientists hiding in the building. In less than a second, he rescued them all, transferring them to a city far away before returning. Erik, however, knew nothing of this.

Erik wrapped Clark in a massive ball of stone and metal. He continued to add more debris, increasing the pressure in the center. But everyone, including Erik, knew this attack was pointless against Clark.
