A day later, with his powers fully restored, Clark knew it was time to fulfill the promise he had made forty years ago: to give mutants a future.
Walking out the door, Clark found three familiar figures waiting for him. They were Erik Lehnsherr, the former leader of the Brotherhood of Mutants and now a powerless Magneto; Emma Frost, the White Queen, who had become a representative of neutral mutants and the new head of the Hellfire Club; and Charles Xavier, Professor X, who, thanks to technology from Clark and Hank McCoy, had recovered from his vegetative state but at the cost of his mutant abilities.
The three seemed to have arrived without discussion, as if sensing his intentions.
"You've all changed so much since forty years ago," Clark said, and his words brought them all back to the past.
Once, Charles Xavier was a playboy much like Tony Stark, living a life of carefree wealth until he chose to shoulder the future of mutantkind. Erik was a killer and super-weapon, trained by Sebastian Shaw, but after a series of well-known events, he dedicated his entire life to fighting for mutants.
Emma Frost was a high-spirited White Queen, arrogant and domineering, who once manipulated humans with a flick of her wrist. Later, she became a voice for most mutants, leading them to struggle in a society that rejected them.
Now, both Charles and Erik had lost their powers, and Erik, like his old friend, was confined to a wheelchair.
Emma stared at Clark, waiting for the answer she had been anticipating for four decades.
"Clark, what are you going to do?"
Charles and Erik remained silent. They were no longer the leaders of mutantkind. The Brotherhood was gone, and Charles had handed over the X-Men to a revitalized Scott Summers. They no longer needed to intervene; they only needed to bear witness.
In response to Emma's question, Clark simply smiled and tapped his own head.
"My super brain tells me that as Superman, I just need to use my power to demonstrate my will. That will be enough."
Ten minutes later, Clark brought Emma to the Daily Bugle in New York. Facing the paper's owner, J. Jonah Jameson, Clark made a single, direct request.
"Interested in doing a global live broadcast?"
In the United States White House, the president—who Charles and others had once described as kind—stared at a document on his desk and picked up a pen. The paper outlined a compulsory medical bill that would require all mutants with U.S. citizenship to undergo a procedure to eliminate their abilities or be considered illegal.
While it was true that the greatest damage from the recent disaster had been caused by the battle between Superman and an unknown enemy, that didn't mean the actions of mutants would be ignored.
Superman's destruction had been a necessary consequence of fighting a powerful foe, and no ordinary people had died. The public, for the most part, was grateful to him, though the government worried about the cost of repairing public and private property.
Mutants, however, were different. Before the incident, Erik had ordered them to attack medical centers, which had resulted in casualties. The U.S. government had shelved its plans to target Superman and incite public outrage against him, choosing instead to focus on resolving the mutant issue first.
In fact, governments around the world, including a major Eastern nation that had no prior intention of passing such a bill, were now submitting similar proposals for a vote.
They didn't plan to eradicate all mutants, but the vote still had to happen, even if the outcome seemed all but certain.
At that moment, the Vice President rushed in, turning on the television.
"Mr. Vice President, it's not like you to be so anxious. The disaster is over; we can relax a little."
"No! Mr. President, it's Superman! He's using special technology to start a global live broadcast!"
"What?!"
At the same time, on the high seas of the Atlantic Ocean, a reporter and photographer from the Daily Bugle, with Clark's technical support, began a live broadcast now being seen around the world. The focus of the broadcast was Superman, who was currently hovering over the ocean.
"Found it."
Clark's eyes lit up, and he plunged into the water. A few minutes later, the surface of the sea surged. Just as everyone watching expected a monster to emerge, a mountain slowly began to rise from the depths.
And that was just the beginning.
As the entire mountain cleared the water, more and more land began to appear. When the shaking finally stopped, the reporters and photographers rubbed their eyes in disbelief. What lay before them was an endless stretch of land, its horizon lost to the eye.
Even the pilot, Hank McCoy, seemed stunned, but he calmly landed the plane as planned, opening the cabin door for Emma and the camera crew.
Emma then planted a prepared flag on the new land, turning to face the camera.
"On this new land," she announced, "a nation for mutants will be born: Krakoa!"
Emma began her speech, using the opportunity to spread the news of the new mutant nation to the entire world. Mutants who had been persecuted watched this scene and were moved to tears. They had no other real options, and they knew that given the chance, they would go to Krakoa to live with their own kind.
At that moment, Clark emerged from the water and stood just at the edge of the camera's view. "Krakoa? That name… Emma really knows how to choose one."
Slowly, Emma's speech came to an end. It was a great success; Clark could see the stir it was causing among mutants all over the globe. The excluded and persecuted had long grown tired of a society dominated by humans. Even though Krakoa was nothing but land, they were willing to go.
But for those mutants who hadn't suffered persecution and still had families in human society, Emma's words were not enough.
This was not what Clark had wanted. He wouldn't require all mutants to enter the new nation for a unified life, but he also didn't want the country to become a gathering place for only the most radical elements.
So, Clark took the microphone from Emma and began his brief speech.
