"Clark, do you have any ideas?"
The mood was ruined. After the incident, neither Benjamin nor Clark felt like going to the office, so they decided to head home together. On the way, Benjamin naturally brought up the topic.
Clark could only shake his head. "There are more and more secret places shielded with lead around the world now. I can't monitor every bit of information. This isn't aimed at us, so I don't have any clues just yet."
Superman isn't all-knowing and all-powerful—at least, Clark is far from it at this point.
"But I do have a plan."
Just because he had no immediate leads didn't mean Clark wouldn't take action. The incident happened in New York, and as Superman, he had to investigate it. However, a follow-up investigation would be difficult to conduct as Superman.
Superman's very existence pushes the boundaries for many people in power. To maintain this delicate balance, it's best for him to avoid any obvious, close ties with powerful organizations or individuals. Because of that, Clark needed to go there himself, in his civilian identity.
"Since you already have an idea, I feel relieved."
With that, Benjamin dropped the subject. He had no intention of showing off his own abilities, nor was he naive enough to think he could always help his superhuman son. Instead of asking questions and getting confused, it was better to leave everything to his capable son.
The next day, Stark Industries welcomed an unexpected guest: Clark Kent, the largest shareholder of Parker Industries.
In the conference room, Tony greeted the guest alone, but his expression made it clear the playboy was not in a good mood.
As soon as Clark sat down, Tony spoke. "Mr. Kent, you sure know how to pick your timing. My secretary dragged me out of bed this morning and forced me to come here to meet you. You'd better have something important to say."
He was clearly annoyed. He could have spent another day with the model, but because this kid had suddenly messaged him asking for a meeting, Pepper had gotten him up early. The model had been sent away a day earlier than planned. Who knew if she would even be "clean" the next time he saw her? Tony Stark was a germaphobe, and it was rare to find such a fresh, sexy model!
Clark could only smile helplessly. "Based on what I know of your schedule, meeting you on any day or at any time would most likely interrupt something."
"Hmph!" Tony snorted. He knew Clark was right, but he was still displeased. He crossed his arms and said coldly, "If you have something to say, just say it. I know you're probably not here to collaborate with Stark Industries. So why are you bothering me?"
While the American public was still in the dark, Tony, who now saw Clark as a competitor, knew that this kid, who was about to turn 15, was not just playing with his father's company. The rapid rise of Parker Industries was entirely his doing.
Because of this, although his attitude was still poor, Tony would never underestimate him. He thought to himself that this kid was worthy of being related to Richard; at the very least, his IQ was impressive.
"In that case, I'll be direct. Do you have any insight into what happened at the lecture hall yesterday?"
Hearing this, Tony's demeanor turned serious. George couldn't hide the information Superman had left behind, so Tony knew the truck driver had been manipulated.
"The person behind this must have known Superman was in New York. A traffic accident like that would never have happened so smoothly. They did it anyway. What if Superman hadn't been there...?"
Following Clark's line of thought, Tony predicted that if Superman had been absent, the police would have handled it as a simple traffic accident. But others might not have. Benjamin, the kind of person who would attack his own brother, might not have known, but this young man would definitely have suspected someone was trying to harm his mother.
The biggest suspect would naturally be Stark Industries. Of course, that didn't rule out other possibilities. The forces behind several candidates competing with May for the Queens borough presidency, and even candidates for other boroughs and for mayor, were all, to some extent, suspects.
But no matter what, Stark Industries would be dragged into the chaos. In the past, Tony wouldn't have been worried. Even if all the other companies in New York ganged up on him, as long as he wasn't truly at fault, he wouldn't be afraid.
But now, Parker Industries had grown into a true behemoth under this kid's leadership, one that could compete with Stark Industries.
While Stark Industries was still far ahead in total asset value due to decades of accumulation, Parker Industries, which controlled a large number of new materials and supplied them to other countries outside the U.S., had an equally powerful standing.
Anyone with a keen eye could see that the rise of Parker Industries was nearly unstoppable.
Even if the U.S. government tried to pass a targeted constitutional amendment, Parker Industries could simply leave. With its technology, it could move to any country and quickly rebuild a new corporation.
Without Superman to point out the conspiracy, if Tony had gone against Parker Industries, he couldn't have been sure that Stark Industries would emerge unscathed, and it would have surely come at a very high price.
"I also know there's a high probability someone is targeting Stark Industries. But even so, I can't really get involved on my own."
"After all, you know what I do. I'm pretty sure every terrorist who's been hung up and beaten by the U.S. military wants to kill me."
Hearing Tony's words, Clark secretly rolled his eyes. My goodness, this 37-year-old playboy didn't seem to realize his own weapons were being sold to terrorists. Those terrorists didn't have time to thank him, so why would they want him dead? If he died, who would they buy those high-quality weapons from—the weapons that could defeat local government forces?
Thinking this, Clark felt a sense of helplessness once again. He needed to make some time to visit those developing countries soon, before these terrorists got even more out of hand.
