The sound of war was everywhere shouts, metal clashing, the cries of soldiers and mages alike. The Golden lion Squad Three was at the heart of it all, their figure lit by the orange glow of torches and crackle of magic. Prince Edward Solari, leader of Squad Three, gripped his sword tightly, his sharp eyes scanning the treeline. His long silver hair swayed behind him as he commanded his squad with every ounce of strength in his body. His men, all clad in enchanted steel and armed with both sword and magic, moved as a cohesive force under his leadership.
The Enchanted Wistoria Forest loomed around them a dense, shadowy expanse of towering trees and mossy paths also infested with monsters looming around waiting for preys to feast on. The air was damp, the scent of earth and old magic and monsters wrapping around every breath.
But they were in trouble. Enemy forces had them surrounded.
"Hold the line here!" Edward barked, his voice cutting through the noise. He adjusted his grip on his long sword, its blade gleaming under pale moonlight. It had started raining and getting cold by the hour. His men obeyed, forming ranks and preparing their spells. But the tide of battle was against them.
Suddenly, a mage appeared beside him. Her dark, flowing rode shimmered with stars of blue light as she conjured arcane symbols in the air. Her long hair, a cascade of pure sapphire brilliance, caught the dim glow of torches, her sapphire eyes as sharp as the lighting magic she summoned.
"Commander!" she said, her voice calm but resolute, "The enemy is advancing! If we can escape, we need to get to the cave by the river bend, it's our only chance to regroup."
Edward turned to her, studying her sharp features, her focused gaze. "Mage Althoria," he said, his voice low but steady, "we'll hold this position. Do what you can, but keep the quad together. Do not let them break our ranks." But before he could give out order, the clash of swords and the blast of magic exploded nearby.
They fought side-by-side for hours through spells, fire, and steel. His men fell, one by one, but Edward pressed on, fighting with the determination of a seasoned swordsman. The mage fought alongside him, her hands weaving magical threads into bolts of lightning illuminating the shadows with every spell.
It was during the retreat through the misty woods, just before dawn that they found themselves cornered. The enemy had pressed harder, their shouts echoing through the trees. The sound of bolts whizzing through the air and steel clashing against bark drew closer. Edward's grip on his sword tightened, and the mage's hand pulsed with radiant energy as the prepared for what seemed to be their last stand.
Then, a guttural roar shattered the tension. The charging soldiers faltered, their formation breaking as figures emerged from the fog monstrous, hulking shapes with glowing eyes and twisted limbs. The creatures tore into the enemy ranks with unnatural speed and ferocity, claws rending steel as though it was paper. Screams of terror replaced battle cries, and men who had moments before marched with purpose now scattered like leaves in the wind.
Edward looked at her through the shadows. Who is this woman? He thought. Her power was unlike any other he had encountered, her grace and confidence a striking contrast to the chaos the battlefield.
"We need to run," she said, her voice steady, her hand pulling at her robe. She was casting another spell, her blue aura shimmering as they fought their way through the dark expanse of the forest.
Edward turned toward her, his voice uncertain but resolute. "Where will we go? They'll follow us through the forest if they regain their composure and we're not careful"
Before she could answer, they found themselves t the cave's entrance. It was an ancient structure, deep enough to conceal them. The stone was cold and damp, the sound of rushing water coming from nearby. But before they stepped inside Edward stopped her, "there could be monsters in here," she looked at him them she gazed at the cave then she said, "it is safe I have checked already, now rest because we have to move at any time given." He sighed and nodded.
The moment they stepped inside the cave, the sounds of war were muffled, leaving only the sound of their breathing. The two of them stared at each other in the low light of the cave. Edward leaned against the stone wall, his sword at his side. The exhaustion of the battle pressed on him, and his gaze was drawn to the mage once more. She was beautiful her sapphire blue hair reflected the faint light, and her glowing aura seemed to bring the cave alive with an ethereal glow.
"I didn't expect this," Edward whispered.
The mage lowered her head, watching at the flickering flame she conjured to keep the warm, then watched the prince in silence. Their eyes met for the first time.
