Chapter 166 - Chapter 165: Guidelines for Justice and Kingship

Moses continued speaking to the people, saying,

"Do not sacrifice to the Lord your God an ox or a sheep that has any defect or flaw, for such an offering would be detestable to Him.

If any man or woman living among you in one of the towns the Lord your God gives you is found doing evil in the eyes of the Lord, violating His covenant, and has gone to serve other gods, bowing down to them or to the sun, the moon, or the stars of the sky—something I have forbidden—then this matter must be carefully examined. If it is proven true that such an abomination has been committed in Israel, then the man or woman found guilty of this evil must be taken to the city gate and stoned to death.

No one is to be put to death on the testimony of only one witness; there must be two or three witnesses. The witnesses themselves must be the first to throw the stones, and afterward, all the people shall join in. In this way, you will remove the evil from among you.

If cases arise that are too difficult for you to judge—whether concerning bloodshed, disputes, or assaults—then you shall go to the place the Lord your God will choose. There you must present your case before the priests, who are Levites, and before the judge who is serving at that time. They will examine the matter and give you a verdict.

You must act according to the instruction they give you at the place the Lord chooses. Be careful to do exactly what they direct you. Do not turn aside from their decision, neither to the right nor to the left.

But if anyone shows contempt for the priest who stands to minister before the Lord your God or for the judge who gives the ruling, that person must be put to death. In doing so, you will purge the evil from Israel. Then all the people will hear about it, be afraid, and not act arrogantly again.

When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, take possession of it, and settle there, you may say, 'Let us set a king over us like all the nations around us.' When that time comes, be sure to appoint the king whom the Lord your God chooses. He must be one of your own people, not a foreigner.

The king must not gather many horses for himself or send the people back to Egypt to acquire more, for the Lord has said, 'You must never go back that way again.' He must not take many wives for himself, or his heart will turn away, nor shall he accumulate excessive silver and gold.

When he sits on the throne of his kingdom, he must write for himself a copy of this law from the scroll kept by the priests, the Levites. This law is to stay with him, and he must read it every day of his life so that he may learn to fear the Lord his God, carefully keeping all the words of this law and its decrees.

He must not consider himself better than his fellow Israelites or turn aside from the command to the right or to the left, so that he and his descendants may reign long in his kingdom in Israel."
