Moses spoke to Israel, saying, "If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all His commands that I give you today, then the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. All these blessings will come upon you and overtake you if you obey the Lord your God.
You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the countryside. The fruit of your womb, the crops of your land, and the offspring of your herds and flocks will all be blessed. Your basket and kneading bowl will be blessed. You will be blessed when you come in and when you go out.
The Lord will cause your enemies who rise against you to be defeated before you—they will come at you from one direction but flee from you in seven. The Lord will bless your barns and everything you put your hand to. He will establish you as His holy people if you walk in His ways. Then all nations will see that you are called by the name of the Lord and will fear you.
The Lord will grant you abundant prosperity—in your children, your livestock, and your crops. He will open the heavens, the storehouse of His bounty, to send rain in season and bless all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations but borrow from none. The Lord will make you the head and not the tail; if you obey His commands, you will always rise and never fall. But do not turn aside to serve other gods.
However, if you do not obey the Lord your God, all these curses will come upon you and overtake you. You will be cursed in the city and in the countryside. Your basket and kneading bowl will be cursed. Your offspring, crops, and livestock will be cursed. You will be cursed when you come in and when you go out.
The Lord will send curses, confusion, and rebuke in everything you do until you are destroyed for forsaking Him. He will strike you with disease, drought, and blight. The sky above will be bronze and the earth below iron. The Lord will turn the rain into dust until you perish.
You will be defeated before your enemies and become an object of horror to all nations. Your bodies will be food for the birds and beasts, with no one to scare them away. The Lord will afflict you with boils, tumors, madness, and blindness. You will grope at noon like a blind man in darkness.
You will betroth a woman, but another will take her. You will build a house but not live in it. You will plant vineyards but not drink the wine. Your livestock will be stolen before your eyes. Your sons and daughters will be taken from you, and foreigners will consume your harvest while you are powerless.
Strangers among you will rise higher and higher, while you sink lower and lower. They will lend to you, but you will not lend to them. You will be the tail and not the head because you did not obey the Lord.
Because you did not serve the Lord with joy and gratitude in times of plenty, you will serve your enemies in hunger, thirst, and nakedness. A fierce nation from far away will come against you, devouring your land and besieging your cities until you are destroyed. In desperation, even the most gentle man or woman among you will turn against their own family.
If you do not fear the glorious and awesome name of the Lord your God, He will bring plagues, diseases, and disasters upon you and your descendants. You who were as numerous as the stars will become few because you did not obey the Lord. As it once pleased Him to bless you, it will now please Him to destroy you and uproot you from your land.
Then the Lord will scatter you among all nations. There you will serve gods of wood and stone, and you will find no rest. You will live in fear and despair, longing for morning by night and for night by morning. Finally, the Lord will send you back to Egypt in ships, where you will try to sell yourselves as slaves—but no one will buy you."
