Chapter 286: The Wise Fish's First Battle
Following Amuyar's brisk pace, Basalt and Finn quickly left the courtyard compound and arrived at a small pond on the edge of the oasis.
The location was interesting. Outside the pond was sparse grassland, beyond which lay the desert. Inside was lush green grass, dotted with a few Populus trees and unknown shrubs.
"Water, grass, and sand... three terrains in one? Interesting!" Basalt raised an eyebrow, clearly pleased with the environment.
"Hey everyone, come look! Amuyar's battling someone again!"
Hearing that Amuyar was about to battle, many of the Roba Tribe children came running over to watch. Some were as young as six or seven, while the older ones were around Amuyar and Basalt's age.
"Your name is Amuyar, right? My name is Basalt," Basalt said with a smile, introducing himself. "So, what are the rules?" he asked curiously.
"Three-on-three. Whoever's Pokémon are all knocked out loses."
"Sounds good," Basalt nodded and took his position.
"Alright, as the host, I'll send out my Pokémon first!" Amuyar took out a Pokéball and threw it forcefully.
"Cac-nea!"
With a familiar cry, a cactus-like Pokémon with a crown appeared.
"A Cacnea?" Basalt scratched his head, looking a little helpless. This was the Grass-type Pokémon James used in the Hoenn region saga.
Didn't they say Amuyar was strong? Why is he sending out an unevolved Pokémon?
"Could it be... this is also a newly trained Pokémon?" Basalt raised an eyebrow. The more he thought about it, the more likely it seemed. This was probably just a probe; he wasn't sending out his main Pokémon yet.
"In that case, you're up!" Basalt's eyes narrowed, and he took a Pokéball from his belt and threw it.
"Kip!"
Mudkip, with its wise eyes, appeared. It gave the Cacnea a cursory glance, then plopped down quietly on the grass, unmoved.
"Huh? A Water-type Pokémon?" Amuyar frowned slightly. This outsider... knowing he had sent out a Grass-type, he still dared to send out a Water-type with a type disadvantage?
How arrogant!
What's more, there was a pond right here, which would favor a Water-type. But the Mudkip just stayed on the ground, refusing to go into the water.
So damn arrogant!
Although he was fuming inside, Amuyar suppressed his anger and said through gritted teeth, "You're the guest. You can attack first."
But in his heart, Amuyar had already decided: End this quickly, no holding back. I have to teach this Basalt a painful lesson!
"Huh? You want me to attack first?" Basalt paused, then smacked his lips. "Are you serious?"
If Mudkip attacked first, it would inevitably be the Foresight + Ice Ball combo. But that combo was devastatingly effective against Cacnea. One wrong move, and it could be a one-hit KO.
"Less talk, more action! If I say attack, you attack!" Amuyar said impatiently.
"Well... alright." Basalt reluctantly nodded and shouted, "Mudkip, Ice Ball!"
"Kip!"
The moment the command was given, the wise look in Mudkip's eyes vanished, replaced by a cold intensity.
Whoosh!
In an instant, Mudkip's Foresight activated, its eyes locking onto the nearby Cacnea. Then it leaped into the air, releasing Ice-type energy while curling into a ball. By the time it reached the peak of its arc, its body had already become a large Ice Ball, which then hurtled towards the Cacnea at incredible speed.
"Cac-nea!"
The Ice-type energy released by Mudkip caused the surrounding temperature to drop instantly. Many spectators shivered involuntarily.
"Cacnea, Needle Arm, meet it!" Amuyar yelled.
Mudkip's Ice Ball came too fast, too fierce. With Cacnea's speed, dodging was almost impossible. In that case, the only option was to block it head-on.
"Cac-nea!"
Vzzt!
A white light enveloped Cacnea's right arm. Waving its arm, covered in green spikes, it swung it like a mace towards Mudkip.
Clang!
Needle Arm struck the Ice Ball, producing a crisp sound. But unfortunately, Cacnea's Needle Arm couldn't shatter Mudkip's icy shell. On the contrary, the moment it made contact, the bone-chilling cold radiating from the Ice Ball began to invade its arm, gradually numbing it.
And so, after only a brief stalemate, Cacnea's arm was knocked aside by the Ice Ball, leaving it wide open.
BOOM!
The Ice Ball seized the opportunity and slammed heavily into Cacnea's chest, sending it flying.
"Cac-nea!"
Cacnea landed hard. Its right arm was already covered in a thin layer of frost. It struggled to get up.
Fortunately, Amuyar's Cacnea had good stamina. It wasn't knocked out instantly.
"Such pure Ice-type energy!" Finn was slightly surprised. The result was already beyond his expectations. Mudkip wasn't even an Ice-type, and wouldn't gain the typing upon evolution, yet its control over Ice-type energy was no less than an average Ice-type Pokémon, perhaps even better. And that speed was incredible too. This Mudkip had clearly mastered the Ice Ball move to perfection, able to use it effortlessly at any time.
"Mudkip, keep using Ice Ball!" Basalt's lips curled up, his expression relaxed. Although it hadn't been a one-hit KO, the outcome wouldn't change much. On the contrary, the second Ice Ball would boost Mudkip's attack power, making it even more terrifying.
BOOM!
The second Ice Ball hit. The injured and immobile Cacnea's eyes spun, and it fainted.
As for Mudkip, the icy aura around its body grew even colder, and the Ice Ball's size increased, becoming even larger.
"Looks like I've taken the first round," Basalt said with a humble smile.
But in Amuyar's eyes, this humility looked more like hidden arrogance.
"Don't celebrate too early. Cacnea is just a Pokémon I recently started training. It doesn't represent my true strength."
Amuyar recalled Cacnea and immediately threw out another Pokéball.
This Pokémon was aquamarine blue, with a beige underbelly separated by black stripes. It had a long body, no hands, and several ice-blue, tumor-like growths covered in black skin—three on its head and three on its back and waist.
"A Palpitoad?" Basalt raised an eyebrow.
The Ground/Water dual-type Palpitoad had an excellent typing, with only a 4x weakness to Grass and no other weaknesses. It had five resistances and was immune to Electric. If its ability was Water Absorb, it would also be immune to Water, giving it another resistance.
It was clear that this Palpitoad was much stronger than the Cacnea, having evolved once.
Unfortunately for it, it was facing Mudkip. And a Mudkip that had already boosted its Ice Ball twice, combined with the auto-targeting of Foresight.
"Toad!"
And so, the Palpitoad leaped into the air, but the Mudkip, as if having already predicted its movement, adjusted its trajectory mid-air.
BOOM!
The third Ice Ball hit its target, carrying immense force, unstoppable.
The sizable Palpitoad suffered the same fate as Cacnea, sent flying and landing hard, its body covered in a thick layer of frost. It was heavily injured and couldn't get up immediately.
Fortunately, this time, the Ice Ball's size didn't increase further. Clearly, while the move's power could still be raised, Mudkip's physique and stamina limited its ability to enhance it further. This was a Pokémon's instinctive self-preservation.
"How could this happen?" Amuyar grabbed his head covering, finding it hard to accept. Living deep in the desert, he had never seen the move Ice Ball before, so he didn't understand its power or effects. Combined with Mudkip's Foresight correction, it was just too broken. It was unplayable! This result was completely different from what he had imagined.
"Mudkip, Mud Shot."
At Basalt's command, Mudkip whipped its tail, sending a volley of mud bullets covering the Palpitoad. Its eyes rolled back, and it fainted.
"What happened? Big Brother Amuyar's Palpitoad lost too?"
"Wow, that Water-type Pokémon is so strong!"
The Roba youths looked at each other, stunned. The small, cute-looking Mudkip was unexpectedly ferocious.
Basking in the awe-filled gazes of the Roba youths, Mudkip's lips curled up slightly.
Opponents of this level? I could take on three more. I am very strong!
"Kip!" Mudkip let out a triumphant cry.
At the same time, a white light descended upon its body.
