Chapter 771 - Chapter-769 Community Shield

Meanwhile as the players from both sides prepared to take the pitch, the broadcast commentary kept pace with the moment.

"Good evening, everyone, and welcome to our coverage of the season-opening showpiece of English football—the Community Shield final, pitting last season's Premier League champions Liverpool against last season's runners-up, Chelsea!

As the appetizer to the new campaign, this match isn't just a clash between two cities—it's a direct confrontation between last season's top two, and the first full test of both sides' form heading into the new season.

Let's start with Liverpool.

This summer, Liverpool have undoubtedly been the most dazzling presence in world football, splashing out nearly two hundred million pounds on a blockbuster round of signings. The arrivals of Pogba, Kroos, Hummels, and other world-class stars have given Liverpool's squad a top-to-bottom overhaul—arguably the finest in all of Europe.

Last season, they clinched an impressive treble of the Premier League, League Cup, and FA Cup, showing a firm grip on domestic football. Now, reinforced further, Liverpool are the clear favourites heading into today's match.

Their opponents, Chelsea, are nothing to scoff at either.

As last season's runners-up, the Blues bring plenty of quality of their own. Their summer business may not match Liverpool's in scale, but the squad has depth and a mature system.

Facing a fully upgraded Liverpool side, Chelsea have no intention of rolling over. They'll be desperate for a win here, both to blunt Liverpool's momentum and claim the season's first trophy for themselves...

and perhaps lay the groundwork for challenging Liverpool's Premier League crown down the road."

As the broadcast cut to the players in the tunnel, the commentator picked up the pace.

"We can see Liverpool's new arrivals are pretty much all involved. Kroos, Čech, Pogba, Hummels—all are starting.

Let me run through today's starting lineups for both sides.

We'll begin with Chelsea, lining up in a 4-3-2-1 formation.

Starting eleven:

Goalkeeper: Courtois

Back four: Azpilicueta, Terry, Gary Cahill, Ivanović

Midfield: Ramires, Matić, Fàbregas

Attack: Hazard, Oscar, with Diego Costa leading the line!

This lineup continues Chelsea's trademark solidity, balanced at both ends of the pitch—a side that demands respect.

And now, the starting eleven for last season's Premier League champions, Liverpool, who also line up in a 4-2-3-1.

Starting eleven:

Goalkeeper: Čech—freshly announced just days ago as a Liverpool signing from Chelsea, and he's facing his old club on his very first match. A storyline in itself for this legendary keeper.

Back four: Robertson, Hummels, Van Dijk, Piszczek. The brand-new Hummels–Van Dijk centre-back pairing is one of the biggest talking points of the match.

Double pivot in midfield: Pogba and Kroos, the two new signings paired together—covering both ends of the pitch and dictating the tempo.

Front three: De Rocca, De Bruyne, Sterling, with Suárez leading the line!

This lineup keeps the core of last season's title-winning side, adding new face in the key positions..."

BOOM! BOOM, BOOM!!

At that moment, Wembley Stadium erupted once again, roars rolling through the stands as both sets of fans cheered on their teams.

The players stepped onto the pitch!

Both squads lined up, ready to exchange handshakes.

Fans along the touchline waved their team flags and belted out their anthems, driving the pre-match atmosphere to a fever pitch.

The Liverpool and Chelsea players shook hands one by one.

When Čech reached the line of Chelsea players, his expression turned complicated. He shook Terry's hand first—his old centre-back partner gave his arm a firm pat.

Nothing needed to be said.

Then, when Čech reached Courtois, he barely looked at the man, just a quick handshake and he moved on.

Čech knew exactly why he'd left Chelsea for Liverpool—the club had decided to build around a young Courtois as their new starting keeper, and had cast him aside.

The pre-match ceremony proceeded as scheduled.

Soon, both teams stood at the centre circle, waiting for kick-off.

Liverpool's captain on the pitch was Julien.

He chose which direction to attack.

Kick-off went to Chelsea.

Wembley fell silent. Everyone held their breath, eyes locked on the centre of the pitch, waiting for the whistle to sound.

A sharp whistle cut through the stadium's hush—the 2014/15 Community Shield final was officially underway!

Chelsea kicked off.

Fàbregas received the ball at the centre circle and didn't rush forward instead, he calmly laid it off to Matić nearby, who immediately switched play with a square pass out to Ivanović on the right.

Chelsea's attack unfolded slowly with no urgency at all.

They understood: rush against Liverpool, and you're liable to hand them a chance.

Mourinho had stressed it again and again before the match—stay composed!

In the 2nd minute, Ivanović received the ball on the right and drove forward along the touchline. Facing Robertson's defence, he attempted a cross into the box.

Diego Costa surged in, leaping high for a header on goal. But just then, Hummels got there first, powering the ball clear of the box to snuff out Chelsea's opening attack.

Van Dijk and Hummels exchanged a high-five after the successful defensive stand.

Their partnership already looked reasonably sharp.

Liverpool broke forward immediately—Kroos intercepted Matić's pass in midfield and threaded a through ball to Julien.

Julien took it in while in run and, with his remarkable burst of pace, tore past Azpilicueta on Chelsea's right, cutting into the edge of the box before squaring the ball across—trying to find Suárez inside the area.

But the pass was cut out just in time by Terry, who booted it clear with a long ball, restoring possession to Chelsea.

In the 5th minute, Chelsea surged forward again. Hazard collected the ball on the left and cut inside with a series of quick changes of direction, shaking off Piszczek before slipping a pass to Oscar inside the box.

Oscar faked a shot to draw Van Dijk's attention, then threaded a diagonal ball to the advancing Ramires, who struck a long-range effort!

Thwack!

The ball rocketed toward the bottom right corner and in that split second, Čech dove sideways and, with a single-handed save, palmed it up and over the crossbar.

A crucial stop!

The crowd erupted!

Liverpool's fans in the stands surged to their feet in an instant!

This was the value of a top-class goalkeeper on full display!

A save like that, at a moment like this, was every bit as valuable as a goal.

Čech rose slowly, clapping toward his new teammates, urging them to stay sharp. Even against his old club, he was proving his worth through sheer performance.

The corner came in. Fàbregas delivered it into the box.

Gary Cahill rose highest for a header on goal, but it drifted wide—a missed chance for Chelsea.

Čech quickly released the ball.

Liverpool seized the counter—Pogba won the ball in midfield and drove forward, slipping it to De Bruyne, who threaded a through ball for the onrushing Suárez.

It was practically a half-clear run through on goal.

Facing Courtois coming off his line, Suárez went for a low shot but his standing foot slipped slightly, throwing off his technique, and the ball flew wide of the far post.

Another missed opportunity for Liverpool.

Suárez steadied himself and muttered a curse under his breath.

Then gave Pogba a thumbs-up.

This match had shown some quality in the Pogba–Kroos partnership in midfield—Pogba was clearly willing to track back defensively and was covering plenty of ground too. And he still had that long-range passing to offer.

The Kroos–Pogba–De Bruyne midfield trio had Gerrard sitting quietly on the bench, watching lost in thought.

He wasn't sure how to make sense of his own changing role within the team.

Over the years, he'd grown used to being the core of the side.

But now he realized—this Liverpool was transforming at breakneck speed, and he was starting to feel his age.

He was nearing the point where retirement wasn't so far off...

On the pitch, in the 8th minute, Kroos controlled the tempo in midfield, circulating the ball to try to break down Chelsea's defence, while Pogba drifted around him, making runs to open up space for his teammates.

Chelsea's defence stayed tight and organized—Matić and Fàbregas were forming a wall in midfield, breaking up Liverpool's passing lanes repeatedly.

Both sides fought fiercely for control of the midfield, trading possession back and forth, neither was willing to give an inch. The contest was tightly contested.

In the 10th minute, Hazard once again showed off his individual quality, receiving the ball on the left and beating Robertson before delivering a cross. Diego Costa rose in the box to flick a header on goal, but there wasn't much power behind it, and Čech gathered it into his arms without any trouble.

Another crisis was averted.

Then, Čech sent the ball long, but it was cut out by Azpilicueta, and both sides went back to battling it out in midfield.

On the touchline, Mourinho's expression was grim, his brow furrowed without a moment's relief. He stared intently at the pitch, barking instructions nonstop, directing his players.

"Move! Open up the space! Don't give them room to counter!"

He watched his team's defence get hit again and again by Liverpool's counters, his expression was growing darker by the minute.

Clearly, he wasn't satisfied with the deadlock on the pitch—he wanted his side to break the stalemate and seize control of the match.

On the other side, Klopp showed no signs of easing up either. He stood at the edge of the technical area with tightly pressed lips.

Every now and then he'd shout out over a teammate's mistake.

The scale of the club's transfer business this season had put plenty of pressure on him too—he had to deliver results to match it.

Gradually, the pace of play picked up further, the midfield battles growing ever more intense.

Time passed.

Until the 17th minute.

Liverpool had held the bulk of possession through this stretch, with Chelsea leaning on their defence and looking to counter.

Kroos picked up the ball in midfield and, rather than rushing a pass to Pogba beside him, lifted his head to survey the pitch, his eyes locking onto Julien making a run on the left.

Then he unleashed a pinpoint long pass—the ball carrying just the right arc, sailing clean over Chelsea's midfield line and dropping perfectly at Julien's feet.

The sudden ball caught Chelsea completely off guard.

Within Liverpool's midfield setup, Kroos hadn't exactly stood out so far—in fact, plenty of English media had questioned whether he'd even earn a regular spot in this Liverpool lineup.

And yet, his handful of long passes in this match were showing people a different side of him.

When it came to controlling the rhythm of the midfield, Kroos clearly had something of his own to offer.

That pass found Julien near the left touchline.

Facing Chelsea right-back Ivanović, with Ramires also dropping back to help cover, Julien took the ball, paused for the briefest moment—and the instant he sensed a shift in his defender's balance, he exploded forward without a shred of hesitation.

Drawing on his sheer burst of pace and quick footwork, he went straight at Ivanović.

Ivanović, seeing this, dropped his centre of gravity low and clamped down tight, trying to halt Julien's advance but Julien was simply too fast, his feet was changing direction far too sharply.

One feint threw Ivanović's balance completely off.

Julien immediately accelerated past him, and Ivanović, unable to hold his footing, slipped and crashed to the ground, left to watch helplessly as Julien blew right past him.

Ramires, who had been dropping back to cover, saw Ivanović go down—and immediately sprinted to close in on Julien.

Trying to cut off his path, but Julien's burst forward was simply too explosive— Ramires was ultimately a moment too slow, unable to get into position in time.

At that moment, Julien had already carried the ball to the edge of the box. He faked as if he'd continue to the byline for a cross, drawing the attention of Chelsea centre-back Terry.

Terry instinctively shifted toward the flank, trying to cut off the crossing lane.

The instant Terry began to move, Julien suddenly cut inside, loaded up his shot, and struck it toward goal with full power!

Thwack!

The ball screamed through the air, rocketing straight for the top right corner!

Fast, powerful—Courtois lunged desperately to his side. His physical attributes ranked among the very best of any keeper in the world, and even though Julien's shot had come suddenly and carried a wicked bend, Courtois still managed to get his fingertips to the ball.

Only, he was still just a fraction too slow.

He'd gotten a touch on it, but he couldn't keep it out—couldn't change its course.

Whoosh!

Even with that touch, the ball still found the net!

GOAL!

Julien breaks the deadlock!

1–0!

Liverpool lead Chelsea!

BOOM!

BOOM, BOOM!!

"JULIEN!!"

Wembley's Liverpool faithful erupted in an instant—a crimson tide was sweeping through the stadium, cheers, roars, and chants of the club anthem all were blending together, thundering to the heavens!

Julien ran toward the touchline, arms thrown wide, pouring out every ounce of joy from the goal.

The Liverpool fans waved their arms in a frenzy, screaming themselves hoarse—Julien, delivering victory for Liverpool time and time again.

And maybe, tonight would be no different.

His teammates rushed over and swarmed him, with Kroos, Pogba, and the other new signings hurrying in as well to trade high-fives and hugs, celebrating the brilliant goal.

Pogba burst out laughing. "Julien, that was gorgeous!"

Julien, still in the embrace, pointed toward Kroos. "Toni, great ball!"

Kroos laughed heartily.

On the touchline, Klopp pumped his fist with raw emotion—once, twice, building with each punch, and by the third, he let out a full-throated roar.

All the pressure of preparing for this season was released in a single moment.

And the man who'd scored?

Once again, Julien.

Still the soul of this Liverpool side.
