Chapter 146 - Destiny

Somewhere underground…

"What happened?!" Obito cried out, startled.

"You should hurry, your friends are in trouble!" White Zestu said with feint worry, "that girl Rin and boy Kakashi you keep talking about in your sleep. It seems like they were ambushed while on a mission, and they're in a really difficult situation."

The resting old Uchiha silently watched the boy's reaction.

Obito's eyes widened hearing the news, and without waiting for any sort of approval from Madara, he dashed towards the exit of the cave, grabbing a dark cloak on the way out as he covered the odd White substance that had been covering his body and healing him.

After being ambushed, Kakashi and his teammates took what time they could to plan a rescue, and everyone was on board with reducing her. Just like his father Sakumo, he would not abandon a comrade.

But they had to act as quickly as they could, if Rin entered Kirigakure, rescuing her would be impossible. They moved with haste, managing to track down the larger group, but strangely they hadn't been trying to return to their village, instead they were moving toward Konoha.

"Move brat before you get-" the words of the Chunin carrying Rin were cut short, as he collapsed to the ground. Perched on his neck for a moment was Kakashi, bearing a bloody Tanto. The boy's face was dark and clouded with silent rage.

I will not lose another teammate… another friend… We already lost Obito, then half of our team was wiped out. This won't go without retribution.

The rest of Kakashi's squad dove forwards alongside him, and while they expected the fight to be difficult, they hadn't anticipated how out-matched they were. The previous ambush within the chakra scattering mist hid their strength, but now they could tell that they faced nearly 50 Shinobi. Immediately, a Kiri shinobi reappeared behind a Leaf kunoichi- the squad's healer- and cut her down.

Kakashi's mind raced back to the image of the bruised and bloodied body of Obito, but the white-haired boy could only grit his teeth and focus on the fight in front of him, as two Jonin approached him and Rin, who lay weak on the floor behind him.

What's going on? She thought, as she slowly opened her eyes. Her body was weak and her voice was broken, but when she saw what was happening around her, her eyes widened, and panic struck her face. The last memory she had was half of her team getting obliterated by an enemy attack. And faint images of a pot and something being sealed into her stomach.

Now she saw the rest of them alongside Kakashi fighting for their lives. One by one, they fell, succumbing to the Kiri attacks, only Kakashi remained fighting desperately to save his friend, as he faced multiple Jonin now.

We really underestimated them…this is all my fault, I made them rush in without a plan!

"Kakashi, they're after me," Rin groggily said, propping herself up.

"Rin," Kakashi cried, "stay behind me, I'll get us out of here."

"Leave me, Kakashi, you're only going to get yourself hurt…or worse! I am their plan! Leave!" Tears poured down Rin's face. Kakashi briefly turned to address her, only to see his remaining closest friend crying for him to escape, and leave her to the enemy.

Suddenly, he remembered the talisman Katsuro had given him before the mission.

"Use this if you need me." Katsuro had said.

Grabbing the object, Kakashi put his chakra into it hoping that his grand-teacher could cross the impossible distance and an entire ocean. However, Kakashi knew by the time Katsuro arrived it would be too late. He knew from proximity with its only users that over such a distance, Flying Raijin needed teleportation between relays.

"Chidori!" As Kakashi stepped past another attack and struck down the enemy, the Jutsu coated his sword to cut through flesh and bone like butter. He had cut down multiple Shinobi while surrounded, his Sharingan's visual prowess helping him dodge the attacks from all angles. But it couldn't happen forever. He couldn't protect both himself and Rin against these odds.

There's only 6 left, but I won't be able to hold them back by myself… everyone else… I can't be thinking like that now, Rin needs me to protect her- I promised Obito!

His panic and situation meant other than surviving he didn't think of anything else, because if he was in a regular state he would question what happened to so many of the Kiri shinobi. Even with his whole team's attacks, just under 50 couldn't be reduced to just 6. At least 10 had vanished.

His thoughts were scattered, filled with motivation as his body continued to work on autopilot. Instinctively, Kakashi raised the Chidori formed in his opposite hand while he used his sword to block Kunai, and the clumsy enemy Chunin approaching, startled by the Jutsu suddenly tried to back away, but Kakashi dove forwards.

5 left, I just-

Kakashi's eyes widened and his body stopped in horror. Standing in front of him with a bloody hole through their stomach was not the enemy. Instead it was the one he had promised to his dead friend to protect with his life.

"RIN!" Kakashi screamed. His hands wouldn't move, as he was paralysed with sheer shock.

"It's okay, Kakashi," Rin coughed, blood pouring from her mouth, "save yourself. Become a great shinobi like Obito said. We'll both be waiting for you…" The girl's body went limp and she gave one last hug to Kakashi, before her eyes went distant, and her heartbeat stopped.

Kakashi, unable to comprehend what had just happened, shook as tears poured from his eyes, as if he forgot that he was in a fight. Now, the pain from Obito and Rin together, as well as his dead teammates, came flooding back to him, drowning him in shame, guilt and sorrow.

Her blood flowed down his arm, its warmth a contrast to the rain's cold. Even when the Chunin rushed toward him once again, he stood there as if he was frozen.

From the side…

"Rin, Kakashi!" Those thoughts kept repeating in his mind as he made his way toward them following the trails of the battle. He dealt with anyone who got in his way, instinctively using the new power that was bestowed upon him. His worry masked even the sudden surge in power he was currently experiencing.

Then, through the foliage he saw them. Kakashi fighting with Rin to his back surrounded by several Kiri shinobi.

But just as relief came and before he could dash out to help them, he saw Kakashi form his signature Chidori and watched Rin impale herself on it.

"No…Kakashi…you couldn't…" Obit fell to his knees, tears slowly trickling down his face.

He saw Kakashi's hand sticking through the stomach of his last remaining teammate, and best friend, the girl Obito had so desperately tried to win over. And before Obito could say anything else, Rin fell limp. Obito's strengthened body felt weak as he collapsed to his knees. Unknown to them, the sheer grief running through them both had led to their eyes spinning rapidly and awakening the fabled Mangekyo.

Just behind him, hidden in the ground watching over him, Zetsu saw the scene unfold. Perfect, that went better than we could have imagined. It's as Lord Madara said, the brightest of lights when snuffed out make way for the deepest darknesses. Everything's gone great… so why do I feel this sense of unease…

Just then, like an answer to his thought, an enormous presence swept across the field, causing the very air around them all to thicken. In front of Kakashi, stood a stormy looking, solemn, furious Senju Katsuro in his Senju robes. He was not dressed for it, but he looked ready for war. The Kiri uniforms surrounding one of his disciples made him see red. He had been lenient with them, understanding. But it seems he had been too nice. But he caught the presence of the same thing in the final battle a few months ago, and instantly his eyes snapped between the trees. And through the darkness, he could have sworn he saw the glint of some red eyes.
