And then—something utterly inconceivable occurred.
From the skies descended an Evangelion unlike any ever seen before. In a flash, it touched down upon the scorched earth, then plunged swiftly into NERV's subterranean city, diving straight into the depths of Terminal Dogma.
It was pure white—an Evangelion clad entirely in white armor. Its design and movement were far beyond any existing Eva. The moment Misato Katsuragi and the others laid eyes on it, they knew at once: this was no ordinary machine. Its mobility, its form, its very technology eclipsed everything they had known until now.
"Whose Eva… is that?"
Voices of shock and disbelief rippled through the command center. The world above was already engulfed in flames—no additional Evangelion should even exist, let alone one so advanced.
Could it be… Kaworu?
The thought struck Kitazawa Ryota like lightning, filling him with sudden, burning resolve. In the anime, Kaworu Nagisa had been the strongest of the Angels—a human-shaped Angel. To fight such a being was the ultimate test. To cross blades with him would be unforgettable.
But not now. Not here. Ryota had no Unit-01, no weapon. And from the look of things, Kaworu's target was not humanity—but what lay sealed within Terminal Dogma.
And indeed—
There in Terminal Dogma, the Spear of Cassius was now firmly embedded in Lilith's body. Her cries of agony reverberated through the chamber, raw and terrible. The lance had wounded her—truly wounded her.
Yet Lilith's fury was not only for the spear. She sensed the presence of another being, one whose essence was disturbingly similar to her own. A mere insect dared to fly before her.
With a roar of rage, Lilith lashed out. Despite the Spear of Cassius draining her life, she raised her colossal hand and swatted at the tiny white figure.
Compared to Lilith, even Eva Unit-06—piloted by Kaworu—was no more than a gnat.
But Unit-06 soared through the air with preternatural grace, weaving through Lilith's strikes, its particle blade flashing as it slashed back against the primordial giant.
Why Lilith had awakened was a mystery. But her combat power far surpassed even the Tenth Angel. Not even the most advanced Eva could withstand her fury for long. Unit-06 was hard-pressed, perilously close to destruction.
And then—her hand struck true.
Impact.
Unit-06 was hurled downwards, crashing violently to the ground. Against Lilith, it stood no chance.
Yet Lilith, too, could endure no longer.
Bound here in Terminal Dogma for ages, pierced not only by the Spear of Cassius but also by the Lance of Longinus, her strength had already been bled away. Both spears together had shackled her, drained her life, and left her weakened beyond recovery.
She collapsed, issuing one final, shattering cry.
"ROOOOOAAARRRRR!!!"
It was the wail of a primordial being. The lament of a higher lifeform—accusing heaven and earth of humanity's sins.
But even the greatest flame must one day die out.
As Lilith's roar faded, the broken cavern of Terminal Dogma was suddenly bathed in a flood of power. An overwhelming force surged forth, sealing the entire area in a barrier of death and fury.
At last, Lilith's massive form fell silent. She had entered a slumber from which she would not soon awaken.
The Spear of Cassius and the Lance of Longinus were no human weapons. What they drove into Lilith was not death—but the weight of mankind's sins.
And no one could say how long it would take for that burden to be cleansed.
Even so, the aura of malice and mortality now filling Terminal Dogma shook all who felt it.
Gendō Ikari's laughter mingled with the quakes, snapping the others back into grim reality.
"Everyone—we need to move! If we don't get out now, it'll be too late!"
Asuka's voice rang out from Unit-02, urging the survivors forward.
"But…"
Even Misato hesitated. So did the others—save for Ryota. After all, this was NERV. Until only moments ago, they had been its staff, its soldiers. To abandon it so suddenly, to flee—it was more than their minds could process.
"Go! Now!" Asuka cried. "The flames are spreading down here—we'll all be consumed if we don't leave immediately!"
At that instant, another voice rang out—a man's voice.
They turned—and there he stood.
Ryōji Kaji.
The sight of him left them stunned. That he, too, had appeared here of all places… it was unbelievable.
But there was no time for questions. The inferno was closing in.
"Alright!" Misato shouted, snapping out of her hesitation. "Everyone, onto Unit-02! We leave together—because if we don't go now, we'll never get the chance!"
Yet even as she rallied them, she realized with a jolt that Ritsuko Akagi was nowhere to be seen. But there was no time. No time at all.
One by one, the staff exchanged looks, then nodded. Survival was all that mattered now.
"Come on, everyone—climb onto my hand!" Asuka's voice carried through Unit-02. The giant Eva extended its open palm, waiting.
The surviving NERV personnel hurried aboard—including Ryota. Without Unit-01, he was powerless now.
"Come, Kaji—let's get out of here together," Misato said firmly, looking to him.
But Kaji only smiled faintly, shaking his head.
"You all go on ahead. I, Ryōji Kaji, have… a little business to finish."
And with that, he strode straight toward Gendō Ikari.
His eyes burned with fire, every step heavy with fury.
"Gendō Ikari!" he roared. "All of this—this is your doing!"
Through the raging flames, Kaji advanced. His voice was cold, unyielding.
"For the sake of your own ambitions, you've dragged all of humanity into catastrophe. This is the curse you have wrought! And I, Ryōji Kaji—send you to hell!"
