"But that's a double-edged sword." Marcus continued, almost to himself. "If I actually managed to break a Battle Angel..."
"...what would be left?"
"After tormenting a goddess, everything else would feel meaningless. There would be nothing left to strive for. No challenge. No excitement."
"Just...emptiness."
He shrugged again.
"But who cares? As long as I get to experience that moment—that rush one final time—I don't care what happens afterward. My life would be complete!"
He opened his eyes and looked directly at Charlotte.
"But I'm getting ahead of myself. First, I need to deal with you two."
"Mika!" Charlotte grabbed his arm again, her voice rising with panic. "Mika, please. Let's go! Let's get out of here right now! I'm begging you!"
But Mika didn't move. He just looked at her—and in his eyes, she saw something that made her heart stop.
Apology.
"Sorry, Charlotte." He said quietly. "I don't think we're going to be able to escape from here."
