I watched as Cameron Johnson's face contorted with fury, his eyes bulging as he processed my words.
"You ungrateful little—" He lunged forward, only to be blocked by Nathaniel's imposing figure.
"That's enough," Nathaniel warned, his voice dangerously low.
Cameron pointed a trembling finger at me. "After everything I've done for you! I fed you, clothed you, gave you a roof over your head!"
"The bare minimum required by law isn't something to brag about," I replied calmly, though my heart raced. "And we both know you only did it to keep Mrs. Johnson happy."
Cameron's gaze darted to Evelyn, who stood pale-faced and trembling. Something flickered across his features—guilt, perhaps?
"Evelyn," he said, his voice suddenly softer. "Let's go home."
Mrs. Johnson hesitated, her eyes meeting mine. There was so much left unsaid between us, so many questions. But she nodded weakly and took his extended arm.
"Good night, Juliana," she whispered as they passed.
