The Anbu ninjas drew their weapons and charged towards Kusuo and Natsuhi.
"They're coming," Kusuo warned, casting a worried glance at Natsuhi.
"Don't worry, Lord Kusuo!" Natsuhi's eyes snapped open, a powerful wave of chakra, thick with rage, bursting forth from her gaze. Even Kusuo could feel the intensity of her anger. A thirty-meter radius around her was instantly engulfed in flames, leaving nothing but scorched earth in its wake.
"Fall back and report to the Mizukage! We've encountered an incredibly difficult enemy!" one of the ninjas shouted, turning to flee. But as the four of them tried to escape, a figure appeared behind them.
"Going somewhere to report?" Natsuhi taunted. Against her power, they had no chance of escape.
Despite this, they drew their swords and charged back towards Kusuo.
Kusuo raised an eyebrow. "It seems these few have a death wish." With a single, fluid motion of his blade, their bodies crumpled to the ground. They were so weak he hadn't even bothered to use his Sun Breathing technique.
The remaining enemies turned their attention to Natsuhi. She quickly moved to Kusuo's side.
"Lord Kusuo, are these men not afraid to die?"
Kusuo shook his head. "They are most likely death-sworn guards. Their kind does not fear death."
A flicker of tension crossed Natsuhi's face.
"How is your body holding up?" Kusuo asked, his concern evident. "The Peacock Method you're using seems to be getting weaker." Through his Transparent World, Kusuo could see the internal state of her body. Although the jutsu's area of effect was growing, the internal damage to her body was worsening with each use.
"We must kill them today, even if it costs us everything!" one of the remaining ninjas roared, charging at Natsuhi with his blade raised. "Die, shinobi of the Land of Fire!"
Natsuhi stood her ground, unmoving, and invoked the Peacock Method once more. "Peacock Method! Defend!"
A massive, flaming barrier materialized in front of her. The attacker's blade struck it with a loud clang and stopped dead.
"This is bad! Retreat!" the Anbu ninjas cried out as an intense fire began to radiate from Natsuhi. Even Kusuo was taken aback by the display.
"Fire Style! Phoenix Sage Fire Jutsu!"
Though Kusuo was unsure where she had learned such a technique, its power was undeniable. He mused that even Itachi Uchiha would be humbled by this display. A torrent of powerful flames instantly enveloped the Anbu ninjas.
"Run, she's…" The ninja's words were cut short as the fire completely consumed him.
After the flames subsided, Natsuhi finally stopped, another torrent of blood spewing from her mouth. Kusuo knew this was the consequence of channeling the Peacock Method, which had previously been governed by the Star's energy. Her body was already at its limit, yet she had unleashed such a powerful jutsu. It was only natural that she couldn't withstand the backlash.
He looked at the spot where the Anbu had been. They were gone, incinerated by the blaze, not even a scream escaping them before their end.
Natsuhi collapsed to the ground. Kusuo gently walked to her side and helped her up.
"Are they… all dead?" she asked, her gaze falling upon the clearing she had created in the forest. The sight of her own destructive power sent a cold sweat down her brow. The bodies of her enemies had been burned to ash.
"Lord Kusuo, I…"
"It's nothing," Kusuo reassured her. "You did well. Now let's go. It's not safe here."
He stood up, and Natsuhi, mustering her strength, pushed herself to her feet.
"Your chakra is nearly gone. Are you sure you don't want to turn back?" Kusuo asked.
But Natsuhi shook her head. "Don't worry, Lord Kusuo. A few opponents of this level are not a major problem." She leaned against a tree and forced a smile.
Under Kusuo's lead, the two continued their journey toward the Land of Water. As they walked, Kusuo glanced back at the scorched forest, then at Natsuhi by his side.
"To think this woman could wield such power," he thought. "It's no wonder she can suppress the backlash from the Star."
