Chapter 10 - Chapter 9: The First Real Threat

Evening fell over Kuoh Academy, painting the sky in streaks of crimson and gold. The wind carried the faint scent of blooming flowers, mingled with the subtle hum of latent magical energy vibrating beneath the campus grounds. For most students, the day was ending peacefully, but Christopher Thomas Green could feel the tension threading through the air, a low tremor that whispered danger.

He walked lightly along the courtyard, the edges of his coat fluttering in the breeze. Humor and calm, he reminded himself. Observation first. Action second. Panic never.

A sudden flash of energy near the academy's east gate drew his attention. Students shrieked and scattered as a dark figure emerged, wings unfurling with ominous grace. Christopher's grin tugged faintly.

"Ah. So it begins," he muttered. "First real test… and not a drill."

From the shadows, the intruder moved with calculated precision—a fallen angel, its aura thick with malice, power radiating like a storm cloud ready to burst. Its eyes locked onto Christopher the moment he appeared, assessing, measuring, recognizing an anomaly.

"You," the being hissed, wings flaring. "You are not supposed to be here. You interfere in what is ours."

Christopher tilted his head, smile faint but steady. "Interfere? Perhaps. Observe? Definitely. Humor… optional, but morale essential."

The fallen angel's lips curled in irritation. "You will regret this."

Before Christopher could respond further, a flurry of movement signaled the arrival of the Occult Research Club. Rias Gremory appeared first, her aura flaring crimson and commanding. Akeno followed, electricity crackling faintly along her fingers. Koneko and Asia flanked them, alert and ready.

Christopher raised a hand lightly, signaling calm. "Observation, not panic," he murmured. "Everyone alive? Good. Let's see how they test today."

The intruder lunged, wings snapping open. Energy flared wildly, crackling across the courtyard with deadly precision. Christopher moved with measured steps, subtly redirecting the surges to minimize danger. His calm, humor-infused confidence provided a silent anchor for the students around him.

Issei flinched as a burst of energy nearly caught him. Christopher was at his side instantly, placing a steadying hand on his shoulder. "Steady. Focus. Breathe. Observe the flow, not the chaos."

Issei's breathing evened, his aura smoothing slightly under Christopher's quiet guidance. Asia projected a gentle warmth, Koneko redirected precise bursts, and together they formed a coordinated front, guided invisibly by Christopher's subtle influence.

The fallen angel snarled, wings flexing, sensing an unseen force orchestrating the chaos. "You are more than human," it hissed, stepping back momentarily.

Christopher's grin deepened. "Human, yes. Funny, sometimes. Observant… absolutely. And not alone."

Rias and Akeno struck a coordinated attack, forcing the intruder to falter. Christopher stepped lightly, creating pressure and guiding students from the background. He didn't need to fight directly; his presence was enough to influence outcomes.

"You lead too well," the fallen angel spat, sensing something it could not define—an aura rooted, steady, older than the fleeting power it wielded. Christopher's calm confidence unnerved it more than any attack could.

Finally, with a precise strike from Rias and a supporting maneuver from Akeno, the intruder retreated, wings folding reluctantly, aura still buzzing with irritation. Christopher noted every subtle energy fluctuation as it vanished.

Issei approached, awe in his eyes. "You… you didn't even attack directly, and we were safe!"

Christopher chuckled lightly. "Observation, patience, humor, and subtle guidance. Mostly safe. Mostly controlled. And teamwork."

Asia beamed. "You're amazing! Even the scary stuff isn't frightening with you here!"

Koneko's eyes softened slightly, her usual neutrality giving way to subtle trust. Christopher winked. Humor, patience, observation… bonds forming naturally.

Rias approached, eyes sharp but approving. "Christopher, your calm and perceptive guidance allowed us to handle this threat without panic. Most newcomers would have failed or caused chaos."

Christopher bowed lightly, grin intact. "Thank you. Calm, humor, observation… my personal brand of heroism."

Akeno smirked faintly. "We'll see how long it holds when the real challenges arrive."

As night settled over the academy, Christopher lingered in the courtyard, feeling the pulse of supernatural energy around him. This world was alive—chaotic, unpredictable, dangerous—and utterly fascinating.

He whispered softly, almost to himself: "Challenges… bring them. Observation, humor, calm… I am ready."

A faint voice, like a distant memory, seemed to echo around him:

"You are ready, my son."

Christopher grinned. "Alright, world. Let's see what you throw at me next."
