Chapter 214 — The Battlefield Awakens
The explosion faded slowly.
Fire rolled outward first, then pulled back into smoke. The air trembled for a moment before settling. Broken ground cracked beneath the force, dust rising in thin waves before drifting away.
At the center of it all,
Gaius stood.
Unmoved.
The flames had touched nothing. The blast had reached him, surrounded him, swallowed him whole for a moment… and yet it had done nothing. Not a single mark rested on his armor. The golden auramite remained clean, steady, untouched.
Around him, the ground told a different story.
Blackened stone. Melted fragments. Scattered debris.
His Armament Haki had done its work. It had not flared wildly or drawn attention. It simply existed, firm and unyielding, shaped by his will. The force of the explosion had been stopped before it could ever reach him.
Gaius lowered his arms slowly.
There was no reaction in his face.
No pride.
No relief.
Only his ever-solemn face remained unchanged.
Then he looked around.
The Avengers compound… was gone.
What once stood as a functional base now lay in ruins. Sections of the building had collapsed inward. Fires burned across broken structures. Smoke climbed into the sky in thick lines. Pieces of metal and concrete were scattered across the ground.
No movement.
No sound.
Just destruction.
The attack had been direct. Efficient. No wasted effort.
Gaius lifted his gaze.
Above him, the ship hovered.
Massive.
It blocked part of the sky, its shape casting a long shadow across the ruined ground. Weapons lined its surface, still active, still ready.
Then,
A beam of light formed beneath it.
It shot downward, striking the ground not far from Gaius.
The light held for a moment.
Then faded.
A figure stood where it had been.
Tall.
Broad.
Purple-skinned.
Still.
Gaius' eyes focused on him immediately.
There was no hesitation in his thoughts.
Enemy.
"...So you are the one responsible for this," Gaius said.
His voice was calm.
Direct.
"Xenos."
The figure, Thanos, looked at him.
There was no change in his expression. No anger. No reaction to the word.
His gaze simply rested on Gaius for a moment.
Then shifted slightly.
Measured.
Calculated.
He did not recognize him.
Gaius was not in Nebula's memories. Not part of the path he had already seen.
Which meant,
Irrelevant.
Or at least… not important enough to matter yet.
Thanos spoke.
"You could not live with your own failure."
His voice was steady. Almost reflective.
He wasn't speaking to Gaius.
Not really.
He was speaking to the ones he expected.
The Avengers.
Gaius did not respond.
Instead, he reached up and brought his helm to his head. The auramite locked into place with a clean sound. His view shifted behind the visor.
No more words were needed.
His power fist activated with a low hum.
And then,
He moved.
The ground beneath him cracked as he launched forward. The distance between them vanished in an instant.
Thanos' eyes shifted.
He had not expected the attack.
Not that fast.
Not without warning.
He raised his arms to block.
Gaius' fist met them.
Impact.
The force drove through Thanos' guard, sending him backward across the ground. His body slid, carving a shallow line into the broken surface before he came to a stop.
For a brief moment,
Stillness.
Then Thanos stood.
He looked down at his arm.
There, along the gap in his armored forearm,
a thin line of blood.
Small.
But real.
He stared at it for a second.
Surprise.
Not loud. Not visible in expression.
But present.
"You…" Thanos said slowly, looking back at Gaius. "That weapon."
His eyes narrowed slightly.
"It is no ordinary thing."
His voice remained calm.
"it can injure me."
Gaius said nothing.
But he understood.
This enemy was durable.
More than most.
Then,
Footsteps behind him.
Three figures moved into place.
Thor.
Tony.
Steve.
They stopped behind Gaius, forming a loose line.
Thanos looked past him now.
At them.
Recognition settled immediately.
"You tried to change the inevitable," Thanos said.
He lifted his hand, wiping the small line of blood from his arm.
"Where did that bring you?"
A pause.
Then,
"Back to me."
Tony's eyes flicked toward the blood on Thanos' arm.
He noticed it.
And for a brief moment,
He understood something.
Gaius was strong.
Stronger than expected.
Thanos looked around at the ruined battlefield.
"I thought," he continued, "that by eliminating half… the other half would thrive."
His voice held no doubt.
Only reflection.
"But you have shown me…"
He looked back at them.
"They will not accept it."
"They resist."
Tony let out a small breath.
"Yeah," he said. "We're kind of stubborn like that."
Thanos nodded slightly.
As if confirming something to himself.
"Then I understand what must be done."
He reached down.
His sword lay nearby.
He picked it up.
"I will shred this universe to its last atom."
His grip tightened around the weapon.
"And then…"
He raised it slightly.
"With the stones you gathered for me…"
"I will create a new one."
His voice remained calm.
Controlled.
"A universe that knows only what it has been given."
Behind Gaius,
Movement.
Thor stepped forward slightly.
Lightning began to gather around him again.
Steve raised his shield.
Tony's armor fully formed, helmet closing over his face.
No one spoke.
They were ready.
Gaius' gaze shifted briefly.
Near Thanos' feet,
A helmet.
Left behind.
He stepped forward.
Then,
Pressed his foot down.
The metal crushed into the ground beneath it, buried under force.
A simple act.
But clear.
Dismissal.
Thanos saw it.
Said nothing.
"They will be grateful," Thanos said.
Steve stepped forward.
"Born out of blood," he replied.
Thanos looked at him.
"You would not be alive otherwise."
Silence followed.
Then,
Gaius moved again without warning or signal, his fist powering up as he rushed forward. This time, Thanos was ready. The sword came up instantly as he stepped in and swung, the massive blade cutting cleanly through the air toward Gaius' arm. The angle was precise and deliberate, meant to intercept rather than simply block, and he expected a reaction, a dodge, a shift, anything.
For a brief moment, Thanos believed it would end there, that the arm would be severed and the charge broken. But Gaius didn't stop. His fist drove forward without hesitation, with no defense and no change in direction.
The fist met the blade. A sharp metallic ding rang out, clear, solid, and wrong. No flesh parted, no blood followed. The impact held.
For the smallest fraction of a second, Thanos thought he had misjudged. He knew the gauntlet on Gaius' hand was no ordinary piece, it had already proven that much when it managed to injure him earlier, but this,
The strike should have cut through. Instead, the blade stopped, not merely halted, but held in place.
Thanos' eyes narrowed, then widened slightly as he realized the force behind that single punch hadn't faded. It continued to press forward, unrelenting. At first, he held the sword with one hand, muscles tightening as he anchored his stance. Then, recognizing the pressure, he brought his second hand up and gripped the weapon firmly, bracing against the weight of the blow.
Even so, he was being pushed back. His boots scraped against the ground, the floor groaning under the strain. Gaius did not slow or falter, his advance steady and unyielding.
Thanos adjusted, shifting his weight before moving to counter. His leg came up in a sharp motion, aiming for Gaius' chest. But Gaius rose as the jetpack activated, lifting him into the air and letting the kick pass beneath him.
Distance formed between them once more.
For a moment,
Both sides paused for a brief moment before the others moved. Thor charged first, both weapons in hand, swinging with full force. Thanos met the attack without hesitation, deflecting the strike before driving a powerful kick into Thor that sent him back.
Tony followed immediately, repulsor blasts firing from his hands, but Thanos raised his armored forearm and absorbed the shots with little effort. Then Steve came in, shield held forward as he pushed in close, forcing Thanos back step by step, until Thanos caught the shield, twisted his body, and hurled it aside. Steve was thrown off his feet, hitting the ground hard.
From above, Gaius descended, his power fist leading as the jetpack drove him down with crushing force. The strike landed cleanly, slamming Thanos into the ground beneath the impact as dust rose around him.
A moment passed, and then Thanos stood again, showing no visible damage. His gaze remained fixed on Gaius.
"It seems," he said evenly, "you are quite strong."
He then lifted his hand slightly, a quiet signal. From the ship above, beams of light descended one after another, striking the ground around them. From each beam, figures began to emerge, different in shape and size, unmistakably alien.
A full army began to form.
The battlefield changed instantly as their numbers grew overwhelming.
Gaius looked at them without any visible reaction. Then, with a slight movement of his hand, a silent command, the air shifted. Light began to gather at a single point, particles forming and condensing until something massive took shape.
A machine emerged, large and heavy, towering over the battlefield. A Redemptor Dreadnought.
Its systems activated immediately, sensors locking on as its weapons aligned with mechanical precision. The massive frame turned toward Gaius, recognition clear in its movement.
"Captain Gaius," it said, its voice deep, mechanical, and steady.
Then it shifted its gaze toward the alien army.
"Are these the enemies?"
The battlefield fell into a brief stillness.
