Chapter 217 - Chapter 216 — The Tide Turns

Chapter 216 — The Tide Turns

Cull Obsidian's body hit the ground and didn't move again.

For a moment, no one around him reacted. The battlefield was loud, guns, shouting, metal, fire, but right there, around that spot, there was a small pocket of stillness.

The way he died made it feel strange.

It hadn't been a long fight. There was no back-and-forth, no last push, no moment where it looked like he might turn it around. Gaius had simply taken control of the fight and ended it. Step by step. Strike after strike. Until there was nothing left.

Behind the front line, Bruce Banner stood with his shoulders rising and falling slowly.

He was still injured. His right arm, burned from the snap, hung slightly to the side, dark and damaged. Even with his strength, it hurt to move it. But that wasn't what had his attention.

His eyes were on Cull.

Or rather… what used to be him.

A memory came back without warning.

The city. The fight. The Hulkbuster armor closing around him. The weight of it. The noise. The pressure.

Cull had been strong. Heavy. Hard to stop. Bruce remembered how hard he had to push just to hold his ground. Every hit had mattered. Every move had taken effort.

He remembered how it ended.

Not with a clean win.

Just… enough to get Cull away.

Now,

Bruce looked again.

"…that's the same guy…" he muttered quietly to himself.

And yet…

He had just watched Gaius end him like it was nothing.

Bruce frowned slightly. The feeling in his chest was hard to name.

It wasn't anger.

It wasn't fear.

It wasn't even jealousy.

It was something else.

Something quieter.

"…what is that?" he whispered under his breath.

He didn't have an answer.

Not far from the fallen body, Thanos stood with his sword resting loosely at his side.

His eyes moved once, briefly, to Cull.

He didn't step closer.

He didn't react.

There was no sadness in his face. No anger. No sign of loss.

Only a simple thought.

A waste.

Cull had been useful. Strong. Reliable in battle.

Now he was gone.

Thanos' attention shifted away from the body just as easily as one would move past a broken tool.

His focus returned to the field.

To the ones still standing.

To Gaius.

Behind him, the remaining members of his Black Order watched.

Ebony Maw's hands rested calmly behind his back, but his eyes were sharper now.

Proxima Midnight stood still, her grip tightening slightly on her weapon.

Corvus Glaive's gaze narrowed.

None of them spoke.

None of them showed grief.

But the change was there.

They had seen it.

Gaius was not something to ignore.

Closer to the center, Tony, Steve, and Thor had seen everything.

Tony's helmet tracked the scene for a moment longer than usual before pulling back.

"…yeah," he said quietly. "He really is strong."

They weren't that surprised. After all, they had just fought alongside Gaius and seen him overpower Thanos.

Steve didn't reply, but his grip on his shield shifted slightly. Not from fear. Just… awareness.

Thor looked at Gaius, lightning faintly flickering around him.

He didn't say anything either.

They had fought alongside Gaius already.

They knew he was strong.

But seeing it like this, clear, direct and ruthless, without anything in the way…

It made it real in a different way.

Still,

None of them stepped back.

None of them hesitated.

Gaius was on their side.

That was enough.

Ebony Maw broke the silence.

He tilted his head slightly, looking at the fallen Cull.

"Oh dear…" he said, voice soft and controlled. "That was rather wasteful."

His tone held no emotion. Just observation.

Then his eyes lifted.

"Adjust."

That single word was enough.

Across the battlefield, the Chitauri reacted.

Their movement changed instantly.

What had been scattered lines began to shift into something more aggressive. Groups broke apart and reformed, rushing forward in tighter waves.

Some turned directly toward Gaius.

Others toward the Avengers.

More toward the Ultramarines.

The pressure increased all at once.

Behind them, heavy shapes rolled forward.

Alien tanks.

Above,

The massive ship shifted slightly.

Sections of its hull began to open, revealing the darkness within. From inside, massive shapes started to emerge, large, shifting forms moving with purpose.

Leviathans.

They pushed out into the sky, one after another, their bodies twisting as they spread across the air like a storm rolling in.

The battlefield grew heavier and louder.

Steve stepped forward, raising his shield. He didn't shout or try to make the moment bigger than it was.

"Then we keep going," he said, simple and clear.

A brief pause followed before he added, just as steady,

"I can do this all day."

Tony adjusted his stance beside him.

Thor lifted Stormbreaker and Mjolnirslightly, lightning starting to build again around his arms.

Gaius stood just ahead of them.

His gaze moved across the field.

The numbers.

The movement.

The change.

His thoughts were simple.

This would not end quickly.

Unless he ended it.

His right hand shifted slightly.

Power gathered.

The Emperor's Claw began to form.

Before anything else could happen, a voice came through.

"Look behind."

It wasn't loud, but it was clear. Everyone heard it.

Tony turned first. Steve followed. Thor glanced over his shoulder. Even Gaius shifted his gaze slightly, though he had already sensed their presence through his Observation Haki.

Behind them, a circle of light opened, clean, bright, unmistakable. A portal.

Through it, a figure stepped forward: Black Panther. Behind him, rows of soldiers followed, the forces of Wakanda moving in formation, organized and ready.

Steve's expression shifted immediately, his shoulders easing just a little.

"…hey," he breathed out, relief clear in his voice, quiet, but real.

From the portal, voices began to rise.

"Yibambe!"

Again, louder.

"Yibambe!"

The chant grew stronger, carrying across the battlefield.

Then more portals opened.

One.

Two.

Ten.

Dozens.

They spread across the battlefield, each one revealing more people.

More allies.

Another portal opened, revealing ruined ground on the other side. From it stepped Doctor Strange.

A second portal followed, and Star-Lord flew through, blasters already in hand, then Drax and Mantis, then lastly Spiderman.

Another,

Valkyrie rode forward.

Korg at her side.

Asgardian survivors forming behind them.

Scarlet Witch stepped through one portal alone.

Her presence quiet, but heavy.

The empty ground behind the Avengers filled in. Not scattered. Not disorganized. Ready.

Thanos watched all of it.

His eyes moved slowly across the growing numbers.

His chances shifted.

Reduced.

He understood that.

For a brief moment, something like disappointment passed through him.

But it didn't stay.

He adjusted.

He did not step back.

On the side, Spider-Man landed lightly and immediately looked up.

"…okay, what is that?" he said, staring at the Dreadnought.

Then at the Ultramarines.

"…are those, allies? Why are they so big?"

Doctor Strange hovered nearby, but his focus wasn't on the assembled army.

It was on Gaius. On the Ultramarines. On everything that didn't belong.

His expression tightened.

This… wasn't right.

This wasn't part of what he had seen. Not one of the millions of futures he had looked through.

Not a single one.

He moved quickly to Tony.

Tony turned.

"Is this it?" Tony asked immediately. "Is this the one we win?"

Strange hesitated.

Then,

"I don't know."

Tony blinked.

"…what?"

"I've never seen him," Strange said, glancing toward Gaius. "Or them. Not in any of the futures."

Tony's face tightened.

"What do you mean you didn't see them?"

"I mean," Strange replied, "this wasn't there."

Gaius heard that.

He glanced at Strange briefly.

Said nothing.

Strange shook his head slightly.

"We'll deal with it later."

In front of them,

The enemy army finished forming.

The Chitauri surged forward again.

Leviathans circled above.

Everything was ready.

Steve stepped forward and looked back once at everyone behind him, Wakanda, Asgard, the Sorcerers, the Guardians, and his own team, taking them all in before turning forward again.

"Avengers…"

A small pause.

"Assemble.",

They moved.

All at once.

The ground shook under the force of both sides charging toward each other.

Gaius didn't move with them.

Not toward the army.

His focus was clear.

Thanos.

The Emperor's Claw fully formed over his right fist.

The air around it changed.

He stepped forward.

Then,

He ran.

Doctor Strange felt it immediately.

Even while casting spells, his attention snapped toward Gaius again.

That power,

It felt different.

Not just strong.

Not just dangerous.

There was something else in it.

Something… sacred.

Something he didn't understand.

Ahead,

Ebony Maw saw Gaius coming.

"Stop him," he said calmly.,

Chitauri forces rushed forward.

Dozens.

Hundreds.

They tried to block him.

Gaius didn't slow.

He moved through them.

Each step broke through bodies, weapons, resistance.

They didn't stop him.

They didn't even slow him.

Corvus Glaive stepped forward, his weapon raised and stance set as he calculated the path ahead. If Gaius continued, they would both be struck, a trade. Corvus accepted it. He believed he could survive it.

But Gaius did not change direction. He did not hesitate. The Emperor's Claw lifted, then came down in a single decisive motion.

For a brief moment, everything aligned, the glaive, the strike, the impact.

Then the weapon broke cleanly.

Corvus' body followed immediately after, cut through without resistance. He never got a second move, never even a reaction. He was gone in an instant.

Gaius did not stop. He did not look back or acknowledge it. He simply kept moving, straight toward Thanos.
