Chapter 326 — The Battle Begins
The first Covenant volley crossed the battlefield.
Thousands of plasma bolts streaked through the darkness, each glowing brightly against the emptiness of space as they closed the distance toward the human fleet.
On Halcyon's Reach, every warning display erupted at once.
"Incoming!"
Reyes barely had time to react.
"Shields!"
The order was unnecessary.
JARVIS had already responded.
The ship's defensive systems shifted automatically, redistributing energy across the forward sections. Across the formation, neighboring vessels performed the same calculations through the fleet network.
Then the plasma arrived.
The first impacts struck the shields.
A brilliant flash engulfed the forward half of the ship.
The bridge shook violently.
Several officers grabbed their consoles as the deck trembled beneath their feet.
Reyes remained in her seat.
"Damage report!"
JARVIS responded immediately.
"Forward shields remain operational. Eighty-nine percent capacity."
Reyes stared at the display.
That single number told her how powerful the Covenant's opening volley had been.
The shields had absorbed the majority of the attack.
But they had not absorbed it effortlessly.
Another wave of plasma raced toward the fleet.
"Brace."
The second volley struck.
The shields flared so brightly that the stars disappeared behind the glare.
The bridge shook again.
This time, several warning indicators appeared across Reyes's console.
JARVIS spoke.
"Forward shield capacity: seventy-six percent."
Cross looked toward Reyes.
"They're holding."
Reyes nodded slowly.
For years, Covenant plasma had been synonymous with death.
One good hit could cripple a UNSC warship, forcing humanity to rely on layers of titanium armor and emergency repairs just to survive a few more seconds under fire.
It had always been a losing battle.
Now the same weapons were striking them and failing to immediately reach the hull.
The realization spread throughout the bridge.
The ship could take it.
The fleet could take it.
At least for now.
Reyes straightened.
"Return fire."
The order spread through the fleet.
The response came almost immediately.
Forty UNSC vessels opened fire.
Kinetic rounds accelerated through space.
Energy weapons discharged.
Charged plasma batteries erupted with blue-green light.
Missiles streaked away from launchers.
The entire human formation seemed to fire as one.
JARVIS and Cortana coordinated targeting data between the ships, identifying priority targets and concentrating fire before the Covenant could properly react.
A Covenant cruiser suddenly found itself under attack from multiple directions.
Its shields flared.
One impact.
Then another.
Then dozens more.
The cruiser attempted to maneuver away, but the human fleet adjusted with it.
The ship's shields collapsed.
The barrage continued.
Heavy rounds tore through its hull while energy weapons struck exposed sections.
The Covenant vessel disappeared beneath repeated impacts before finally breaking apart.
Pieces of glowing metal scattered into the darkness.
The bridge of Halcyon's Reach fell silent.
Reyes stared at the tactical display.
"One destroyed."
Cross looked toward the same screen.
"A Covenant warship was destroyed."
Reyes didn't answer.
She was still staring at the marker that had disappeared.
A Covenant warship.
Destroyed.
By them.
"Keep firing."
Aboard the Covenant command vessel, Regret watched the tactical display.
A red marker disappeared.
One of his ships.
Then another report appeared.
"Human forces have destroyed one cruiser."
Regret narrowed his eyes.
"One?"
"Yes, Holy One."
Another officer spoke.
"Their vessels are coordinating their fire between multiple targets."
Regret watched the human formation.
The ships were not merely firing together.
Their entire formation was adjusting.
When one vessel came under concentrated fire, nearby ships shifted position to cover it.
When one ship changed course, others adjusted around it.
When several human vessels engaged a Covenant target, additional ships immediately altered their targeting priorities to reinforce the attack.
There was no hesitation.
No obvious delay.
The formation behaved almost as though every vessel could see the same battlefield.
Regret's eyes narrowed.
"Their coordination is too precise."
A Sangheili officer examined the tactical data.
"They are sharing targeting information in real time."
"Through what?"
"We cannot determine it, Holy One."
Regret continued watching.
The Covenant possessed sophisticated battlenets.
Their fleets were capable of sharing tactical information between ships.
Coordinated fleet warfare was nothing new.
This was different.
The humans were adapting their entire formation almost instantaneously.
"They have unified their fleet command," Regret said.
The Sangheili officer hesitated.
"That appears to be the case."
Regret's expression hardened.
"This is not the human fleet described in the previous reports."
"No, Holy One."
The Prophet continued watching the battlefield.
Humanity had changed.
Or perhaps someone had changed it for them.
He remembered the reports.
The golden warrior.
The strange weapons.
The impossible technology.
The human ships that now possessed defenses that should not exist.
Regret slowly raised one hand.
"Test them."
The Sangheili officer bowed.
"By your command."
Regret's eyes remained fixed on the human fleet.
"Release the fighters."
The order spread through the fleet.
Covenant fighter bays opened.
Seraphs poured from the larger vessels in massive formations.
Thousands of smaller attack craft suddenly appeared on the human tactical display.
Marcus's voice came through the fleet network.
"Multiple fighter groups launching."
Reyes looked at the display.
There were too many to count individually.
"JARVIS."
"Already tracking them."
The tactical display changed.
Blue indicators appeared around the approaching human fighter squadrons.
"Point-defense systems are engaging."
The outer edges of the fleet erupted with weapons fire.
Autocannons hammered the darkness.
Energy weapons flashed repeatedly.
Missiles accelerated toward incoming targets.
Small signatures disappeared one after another.
Human fighters launched from their carriers and support ships.
For several moments, space became chaos.
Fighters crossed between the larger warships.
Missiles streaked toward their targets.
Point-defense guns fired continuously.
Seraphs twisted through the battlefield with unnatural agility, their plasma weapons firing toward human fighters and warships.
Some Covenant fighters were destroyed.
Others slipped through the defensive screen.
One Seraph passed dangerously close to Halcyon's Reach.
A secondary battery immediately tracked it.
Fired.
The fighter disappeared in a flash of light.
Cross looked toward the tactical screen.
"That was close."
Reyes nodded.
"It won't be the last."
Another warning appeared.
"Incoming fighter group."
JARVIS immediately marked the targets.
"Point-defense batteries are engaging."
The ship's weapons opened fire again.
The battle was spreading across every layer of the battlefield.
The Covenant fleet began advancing.
That was when the planetary defense network joined the battle.
Across the surface of the planet, massive Planetary Defense Lasers rotated toward the approaching fleet.
Targeting systems locked onto the nearest Covenant vessels.
For a brief moment, nothing happened.
Then the first beam fired.
A column of energy crossed the distance between the planet and the fleet.
It struck a Covenant warship.
Its shields flared violently.
The vessel attempted to maneuver away.
The beam did not stop.
For several seconds, the ship's shields burned white as they struggled against the concentrated energy.
Then the barrier collapsed.
The beam punched through the vessel's hull.
A massive section of the ship vanished.
Moments later, the Covenant warship broke apart.
A second planetary defense laser fired.
Then another.
Across the planet, the defense network had come alive.
Reyes watched the destruction on the tactical display.
"The lasers are firing."
Cross gave a low whistle.
"I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of that."
The Covenant certainly did not.
A Sangheili officer aboard Regret's command vessel stared at the display.
"Planetary weapon fire."
Regret's expression darkened.
The report from the previous engagement had mentioned them.
They had been the reason the Covenant could not simply establish a close orbital formation and immediately begin systematic bombardment.
Now they had a fleet supporting them.
And the defense network was firing directly into that fleet.
Regret clenched his fist.
"Target the defense installations."
The officer hesitated.
"They are heavily defended by the human ships."
Regret's gaze remained fixed on the tactical display.
"Then destroy them."
The officer immediately bowed his head.
"Yes, Holy One."
The Covenant fleet altered its formation.
Several vessels began moving toward the outer edges of the human line while others directed their fire toward the planet. Covenant ships attempted to create openings in the human defensive formation while fighter groups pushed deeper into the battlefield.
The battle was no longer a simple exchange.
It was becoming a contest for control of the entire system.
Reyes watched the tactical display.
"They're splitting."
Cross looked toward the display.
"Some are trying to get around us."
Reyes immediately understood.
"They're trying to reach the planet."
Before she could say anything else, JARVIS spoke.
"Multiple Covenant vessels are attempting to bypass the defensive formation. I am adjusting the fleet's positions to intercept."
The human formation shifted.
Frigates accelerated toward the flanking Covenant vessels, their engines burning brightly as they moved outward. Larger warships adjusted their positions behind them, covering the gaps created by the maneuver.
Reyes watched the changes appear across the tactical display.
"JARVIS is moving the ships."
"Correct," JARVIS replied. "I am maintaining formation integrity while intercepting the enemy's advance."
The fleet moved with unnatural precision.
Ships accelerated and changed course almost simultaneously. Firing solutions were recalculated continuously. Shield power was redistributed between threatened sections, while weapons were automatically assigned to the highest-priority targets.
The human fleet moved like a single organism.
And everyone aboard Halcyon's Reach could only watch the battle unfold through the information JARVIS provided.
"The outer formation has intercepted the first group."
A series of markers disappeared from the display.
"Two Covenant vessels destroyed."
Reyes barely had time to react before JARVIS continued.
"Warning. Heavy Covenant weapons are targeting the central formation."
Three red markers appeared.
"Impact in three seconds."
Plasma slammed into the human ships.
One vessel lost its shields.
Another suffered severe engine damage.
The third disappeared beneath a concentrated barrage.
Reyes froze.
"Which ship?"
"Ship forty-three."
The marker remained on the display for several seconds.
Then it vanished.
"No response from the vessel," JARVIS reported.
Reyes stared at the empty space where its marker had been.
A human warship had just been destroyed.
Her jaw tightened.
"Record the loss."
"Loss recorded."
Reyes looked back toward the battlefield.
The first Covenant ship had been destroyed.
Now a human ship was gone.
Their fleet could win.
But not without paying for it.
Aboard the assault vessel, Gaius watched the battle unfold.
Titus stood beside him.
The Bladeguard were already preparing their weapons.
The Dreadnought remained inside the modified launch chamber.
The vessel was still holding position.
Waiting.
Gaius's tactical display showed the entire engagement.
"Three human vessels damaged," Titus said.
Gaius studied the display.
"One lost."
Titus nodded.
"The Covenant are beginning to stretch the human formation."
"Exactly."
Gaius watched several Covenant vessels move toward the flanks.
"They're testing the formation."
"And the planetary defenses."
Gaius nodded.
The Covenant were beginning to commit more forces.
That was exactly what he needed.
Titus looked toward him.
"When do we move?"
"Not yet."
Gaius continued watching the battlefield.
The Covenant fleet was reorganizing.
Ships were moving into new positions.
Fighter groups were being redirected.
Several larger vessels were attempting to create an opening toward the planet.
"And their flagship?"
"Still protected."
The largest concentration of Covenant warships remained around the center of the formation.
Gaius studied it.
"They know they are vulnerable."
Titus looked at the display.
"Then they are protecting their command."
"Yes."
On Halcyon's Reach, Reyes received another tactical update.
"Captain," JARVIS said. "The outer formation is under increasing pressure."
Reyes looked toward the display.
A cluster of five human vessels was being engaged by eight Covenant cruisers. Their shields were holding, but several were already showing signs of strain.
"How long?"
"At their current rate of fire, approximately two minutes before defensive integrity becomes critical."
Reyes studied the tactical display.
"Can we reinforce them without compromising the center?"
"Yes. Redirecting three vessels would provide sufficient support while maintaining the central formation."
Reyes nodded.
"Do it."
"Executing."
Three human ships immediately peeled away from the main formation and accelerated toward the threatened group.
The five vessels under pressure suddenly had reinforcements.
Their combined fire concentrated on a Covenant cruiser.
Its shields collapsed.
The human ships continued firing.
The cruiser exploded.
Reyes watched its marker disappear from the display.
"That's how we fight them."
Cross nodded.
"Together."
"Exactly."
The Covenant commander noticed.
Their formation was becoming harder to penetrate.
Every time they concentrated on one target, another group of human vessels appeared.
Every time they attempted to flank the line, the humans adjusted.
Every time a vessel suffered damage, nearby ships moved to cover it.
The human fleet was learning.
Or rather—
Something was teaching them.
Regret stared at the tactical display.
"Who is coordinating them?"
The Sangheili officer hesitated.
"We do not know."
"Then find out."
The officer began checking the available intelligence.
"No obvious flagship command signature."
Regret's eyes narrowed.
"Then their command vessel may be concealed."
He looked toward the human formation.
The answer seemed obvious now.
The humans were not simply using better technology.
They had changed the way their fleet fought.
And somewhere behind that formation was the reason.
Regret remembered the golden warrior.
The one who had destroyed the previous flagship.
"Find their command."
Gaius received the latest tactical update.
The Covenant had begun searching for the human command structure.
He already expected that.
He looked toward Titus.
"They are looking for us."
Titus nodded.
"Then perhaps it is time to stop waiting."
Gaius looked at the battlefield.
The human fleet was still holding.
Barely.
But it was holding.
Several Covenant ships had already been destroyed.
The formation was beginning to stretch.
And the Covenant command vessel remained behind layers of escorts.
Exactly as Gaius expected.
He looked toward the modified launch chamber.
The Dreadnought waited inside.
The Bladeguard stood ready.
Titus checked his weapon one final time.
Gaius finally spoke.
"Prepare for launch."
The chamber came alive.
Locks engaged.
Systems powered up.
The launch pod began charging.
Titus looked toward Gaius.
"Target?"
Gaius looked toward the Covenant fleet.
"Their command."
The Dreadnought's vox growled.
"At last."
