The next morning, I woke up feeling like some old man who had slept too well and now had to pay for it.
My whole body felt heavy in that good, stupid way that only came after real sleep.
Yeah.
Turns out I'd been lying to myself yesterday about being fine sleeping on the ground.
One night in an actual bed and suddenly all my standards came crawling back from the dead.
What made it worse was how completely I'd been out. No half-waking. No shifting around. No snapping awake at every little sound like somebody might decide to split my skull open while I slept. I had just dropped and stayed gone.
Honestly, I'd slept even better than I had back in the Whitesun Hotel.
That thought lasted right up until I looked toward the window and noticed how bright it already was.
I froze.
Then I turned toward the clock.
"Crap."
It was already late in the morning.
