The walk to the Golden Nugget Hotel did not take long.
It was dark enough that the city around us felt almost empty, but nobody walked blindly. We all carried torchlights, their weak beams sweeping across the streets as we advanced together. The shadows of Atlantic City stretched around us, abandoned storefronts, broken windows, cars left abandoned in the middle of the road, old signs creaking and swaying whenever the wind blew in off the water.
