Chapter 12 - Epilogue – Part 2 The Story That Stayed

It was a quiet evening — the kind that carried no weight of expectation, no drama. Just the clinking of tea cups in the kitchen and the slow hum of a fan overhead. He was by the window, lost in some edit, some draft that probably meant the world to him and nothing to the world.

I stood behind him, rehearsing the words in my head for the millionth time.

"I want to be in your story."

He turned, eyebrows raised, playful. "Aren't you already?"

"No," I said, softly. "Not just the stories you tell. The ones you live."

Silence.

That was the first time I saw him caught off guard. Not in the charming, Ayan-way of brushing it off with wit, but in a way that was real. Honest. He placed the pen down slowly.

I swallowed, stepped closer.

"I don't want to just edit your chapters. I want to be one."

The words hung between us like a confession and a prayer stitched into one.

"I'm not saying it'll be perfect," I continued, trying to stop the tremble in my voice. "But I've read every version of you. And this… this is the one I want to stay in."

He didn't speak for a while. He looked down, then out the window — the city flickering in patches of orange, blue, and quiet promises.

And then finally, he looked at me.

With that calm, unshakable tone only he could have, he said,"Let's not call it love just yet. Let's not rush into endings. Let's just… try."

He stood up, walked over, gently brushed a strand of hair behind my ear.

"Let's live under the same roof. Share mornings. Wash dishes. Tell each other stories before bed. Let's see if the chapters we write together… make sense."

I smiled.

It wasn't the answer I had expected but maybe it was the one I needed.

Because sometimes, staying in the story doesn't mean sealing it with a perfect ending.

Sometimes, it just means… Turning the page together and so, in a house filled with half-written drafts, leftover chai, and quiet laughter — we started something new.

Not as lovers. Not as friends. Not as characters.

But as co-authors.

Of whatever came next.
