Chapter 141 - Chapter 141: The Debut of Princess Nancy

[Upon arriving at their destination, they quickly met the de facto leader of the North American base, Nancy Thomas Alva Edison. As it turned out, Edison and Tesla had a bit of a rivalry.]

"Do you know what kind of person I dislike the most?"

Edison sighed. She despised those who preached righteousness and morality while developing weapons of mass destruction to serve hegemonic ambitions.

"Don't you find that a bit contradictory, Miss Tesla?"

Tesla held a different view. She believed that only by making the cost of war unbearable for both sides could it be eradicated from the Earth.

"Hahaha, Tesla's reaction is just adorable! Did she really think I was going to have my people rough her up?" Edison burst out laughing, her shoulders shaking.

"You're just as infuriating as you are in the show," Tesla grumbled, pouting. "I really don't know how that young President figured out your rotten personality."

"That's a good question. Could it be he has a secret crush on me?" Edison asked with a dead-serious expression.

"Oh, give me a break," Tesla said dismissively.

"It seems he has some sort of special ability. He's never met us, yet the characters in his script perfectly match our real personalities," Einstein mused, unable to find an explanation.

"Impossible. You have to believe in science, messy-hair," Edison retorted.

"What Ein said is strange, though, and hard to explain," Schrödinger added, adjusting his cat-ear hat.

"Perhaps some things just can't be explained by science," Edison said with a helpless shrug.

[As the group descended into the drained lakebed, the open-air elevator felt chilly. Deep within the underground cavern, they encountered a solemn and strange gate.]

[An ancient and peculiar script was carved upon it.]

"For the next generation... fight... by us..." the Finn translated instinctively. "Something like, 'We fight for the future.' That's the gist of it."

His voice was a mixture of nervousness and excitement.

When they pushed open the ancient gate, it was like stepping into another world, a dwarven city straight out of Tolkien's imagination. High-powered lights illuminated the massive cavern, casting their glow upon natural stalactites and man-made structures.

As a historical researcher, the Finn was visibly thrilled.

Hearing a high-frequency mosquito-like hum, the group followed Einstein deeper into the ruins, stopping before a particular room.

The room was unnaturally clean, exuding a sense of advanced technology, as if they had instantly teleported from ancient ruins to a futuristic city.

On the ceiling, they discovered a string of English words—modern English.

"To the youngsters who came here"

"I leave the last Soulium to you"

"Knight of Maiden Castle"

"H. Londinium Doire A."

["This part of the plot is well-written, but I didn't quite understand it."]

["Leave it to the Honkai series to teach me something new. Honestly, I had no idea what a 'mosquito tone' was before this."]

Kiana nudged Sirin and whispered, "Sirin, did you get all that?"

Sirin wanted to nod, but she honestly hadn't understood it either. She shook her head. "It must be a message from the Previous Era. 'Soulium' is probably some kind of special metal."

["Soulium... what a fantasy-like name."]

Back in Edison's office, Planck slung an arm around Einstein's shoulders, grinning. "The mosquito tone is a high-frequency sound that only kids under sixteen or seventeen can hear. Our dear Ein in the web series isn't even an adult yet."

Einstein irritably pushed Planck's approaching face away.

Shameless flirt.

Einstein had figured it out. Planck loved to tease her, just as Edison loved to tease Tesla.

[After returning from the underground cavern, Planck decided they should split up. Joyce's group would return to London to investigate the "H.A." clue, while Edison and Schrödinger would continue excavating the ruins, keeping the Finn with them.]

[Planck herself needed to report to Schicksal HQ.]

[Once in Londonderry, Joyce's team found a clue left by "H.A." inside a cannon. Following Einstein's analysis, they went to an art museum the next day.]

[In a dusty, moldy warehouse, they found the painting titled The Execution of Lady Jane Grey.]

[Against a dark background, an innocent girl in a white dress was blindfolded, being led by a priest-like old man towards a cold, imposing execution block.]

[Einstein immediately prepared to extract the resonant Soulium from the painting.]

[A metallic screech, chilling enough to make one's hair stand on end, suddenly filled the air. Tesla quickly covered her ears, but Joyce's first instinct was to cover Einstein's.]

[Like mercury vibrating on a speaker, the painting's protective film slowly turned opaque before their eyes, taking on the silver-white sheen of metal. It began to seep and tremble from the canvas, like sweat, separating from the original image.]

"Hey! You idiot, cover your own ears, now! Your ears won't be able to take it!" Tesla yelled anxiously.

"No, but..." Joyce refused, his eyes fixed on Einstein, who was operating the device with both hands.

"Don't... Ein... will be fine..." Einstein said, her voice strained.

How could one describe that sound?

It was like scraping a steel spoon against a steel pot, or dragging fingernails across a chalkboard, or a ballpoint pen scratching nylon, or iron scraping against glass.

After a long while, the machine finally stopped.

"You... you didn't have to do that."

"What... nonsense are you talking about? This is... the only thing... I can do..."

"You fool..." Einstein helped Joyce sit down. "Rest quietly for a bit. Your auditory nerves are overloaded."

In that moment, Dr. Tesla felt completely like a third wheel.

"How sweet," Planck sighed. A lover of romantic dramas, she couldn't resist a scene like this, especially when the characters were based on people she knew.

"A mercury-like steel... is that really useful? Unless its hardness far surpasses any known material..." Edison mused, a stark contrast to Planck.

"If I remember correctly," Schrödinger said with a strange expression, "isn't Ein immune to these low-frequency noises? Even the mosquito tone didn't damage her auditory nerves at all."

Einstein nodded.

The romantic scene in Planck's mind instantly turned into a tale of a well-meaning fool.
